Do NS bypass a 4-card ♠ to rebid 1N?

When partner's 1NT is overcalled
steve2005 replied to Liversidge's topic in Novice and Beginner Forum
The method we use takeout double almost always has at least 2 cards in overcaller's suit. This facilitates opener converting to a penalty doubles. While a cuebid is 0-1 card in opponent's suits, this helps for slam, deciding to play in 5m instead of 3N or even to play in a 4-3 major fit. Now poster is using weak NT so don't have enough values for 3S but would right opposite a strong NT. -
What do these mean, playing Kaplan Inversion?
steve2005 replied to Jinksy's topic in Non-Natural System Discussion
My thought. Very rare in any case lol. I remember my partner splintering 1♥-3♠ I thought he forgot cause I had a void, but no he had 1, opps never bid with 12♠ between them -
You have to remember id you have 26 points like here between you it is bad bridge in the long run to not be in game. Also sometimes you can't make game with 26 points or even more, thems the breaks. Here 4H looks hopeless, 3S losers and at least 1 heart loser. If opp spades are 43 you might be able to make 3N

I thought this was tricky
steve2005 replied to eagles123's topic in Intermediate and Advanced Bridge Discussion
Yes this solves a common problem. I think standard meaning would be 5S4H INV. Your probably playing in NT not a 4-3H. if no spade fit. So unless knowing p has 4H is gonna propel you to game (unlikely) just a 5S invite is a better use. -
If it was an ACBL event on BBO. Psyches and deviations are allowed. If the partnership consistently makes this same deviation then they can be judged to have an agreement. Then they would have to change their explanation and pre-alert that they open very light preempts. Now how you determine if a partnership has been opening light pretty consistently. Remember even if they are doing it, 0-3 hcp is much lower odds than 6-10 hcp. I suppose you could file an abuse report through BBO (by the hand diagram) and if enough people have it happen to them and they also report it; something would be done, but I wouldn't hold your breath.

When partner's 1NT is overcalled
steve2005 replied to Liversidge's topic in Novice and Beginner Forum
Takeout or Pen again subject to agreement, At club level a lot of weak NT people like penalty as some people overcall on garbage. You can still collect a penalty playing takeout in two ways Responder makes a negative double which opener can convert to PEN with 4 good trump or opener can balance with a double much as you would have if you had opened a minor and been overcalled. Responder can then pass this for PEN, This is not without risk -
A Question on Free week tournament.
steve2005 replied to kontoleon's topic in General BBO Discussion
The free weekly tournament starts sometime early fri morning and resets every week, though you can play as often as you want. Vul is indicated in top left around the board number. Red=Vul White=NV Scoring is matchpoints which means you get 1 pt for every pair you are ahead of and 1/2 pt for each pair with same score -
Obviously E was the Walrus came up with his point count and passed.

A secret of Fantunes which you don't know
steve2005 replied to lycier's topic in General Bridge Discussion (not BBO-specific)
Yes, I agree it's interesting. When u double definitely an improvement. When u pass there is ambiguity, but if first lead doesn't work and you get a second chance might be useful. Ive also heard of 1N-3N type auctions where you double for a specific suit like hearts. so at least you have one suit as a possible lightner type double -
If partner were to bid 2♠ on 9 pts then for this method to work it would have to be non-forcing. This method is certainly playable. However, this method involves a lot of changes to what most people consider standard, so you can't just spring this change on partner. Some discussion is required.

Gib is known to be short of the cards listed in the description. This is why I think a 5-card ♠ suit should be shown as a priority. Now if you have values and 4 trump to an honor support ♦ as slam is possible. Supporting ♦ on Jxx with 5♠ is going to get you to wrong contracts.
-
I agree with responding light when 1♣ all pass could be awful. However, I don't think this is the right hand. You can't handle so many of partners possible responses. You are likely to lose a suit, seems that it will be your 6-card ♦ suit as everyone wants to bid 1♠. Finally, with such a distributional hand that is weak it is unlikely to go 1♣ all pass. Opps likely have 8+♥ so they might even have game.
-
In ACBL semi-forcing you have to announce it, which essentially has same effect as an alert. I think it should be: 1) odds are good the auction isn't going to end so you might get another chance to bid and 1N sounds like that may be it. 2) responder could have 11 hcp some even 12 hcp which makes overcalls more dangerous than a 6-9 or 6-10 1N
-
The small loss of 2♦ vs 2♣ is made up with savings on INV Hands.
-
Play 2/1 without having a forcing or semi-forcing 1N is theoretically unplayable. Otherwise there is no way to show 11 point hands. I suspect the pair was playing 1N semi-forcing which in ACBLland anyways needs to be announced. Semi-forcing 1N can be passed by a balanced minimum, The only other explanation wold be if the 1N bidder was a passed hand then most play 1N as non-forcing.

There is every reason to suspect game, 2♦ is weak (majors) and 4♥ could be just as weak But double still best bidding anything else is too committal. -
after 1N-2♣-2♦ what does responder do with a GF force hand with 1 or 2 4-card majors? I would assume 3♥/♠ but then what do you do with Smolen hands?
-
I concur all your cards are in the majors and partner vul so should have some defense. not accepting and you probably are minus
-
I don't know what Gib plays after a reverse but apparently is not what I learned as standard. With 5+♠ responder should bid 2♠ with any strength barring a hand big enough with 6+♠ for a jump to 3♠ or a hand where a slam is likely in one of openers suit. Then other bids usually have 4♠ and use some form of Lebensohl to differentiate between forcing and non-forcing hands.

Worthwhile to expand 1H range?
steve2005 replied to Kungsgeten's topic in Non-Natural System Discussion
Yes, I could never understand why people play medium club (Polish/Swedish) it seems to have most of the disadvantages of Precision, but what are the gains? -
ACBL and BBO tournaments so list all tournaments then click on BBO tournaments will show what is available, most cost $1 to get to 2 you need to win 1 point to get a "2" rating

ATB: Missed vul game
steve2005 replied to Jinksy's topic in Intermediate and Advanced Bridge Discussion
Not enough knowledge of system to give East any blame. West may not be showing 22-24 hcp, they may just have a good hand looking for no wastage opposite a singleton. If West has shown 22 hcp even then I have sympathy., QJ♣ and even J♦ to some extent are working and even then game might fail as East's trump so bad. -

If 1C is unlimited sounds like they are using 2N as something artificial. May not be including any balanced hands in 2C even is even using 2C as strong, OP did say unlimited so if correct 1C is including 22--24 and even higher. but who knows.
