Excessive HCP requirements for competitive bids
steve2005 replied to iandayre's topic in GIB Robot Discussion
Yes, Is tough, but sometimes points just don't matter. Gib doesn't have a hand with tricks on this one. If Gib had a more suitable hand, like with trump and shortness not necessarily points game is possible, certainly in a major. Seams a shame not to take a shot because if your actually making Gib will put you in 6. -
suit symbols are missing is nearly unreadable.

What did I do to deserve this?
steve2005 replied to oryctolagi's topic in General Bridge Discussion (not BBO-specific)
Partner passed a weak 1N so has virtually 0% interest in game. So, if 1N X comes back to partner with a good hand should pass and unless both partners are an absolute maximum this will be a top board. The corollary is that XX is a an attempt escape with no clear place to play. For real. -

You posted this, you got our opinion. In my opinion taking any bid is wrong after 1N virtually describing your hand to partner 12-14 balanced. I think it important to know why 2D wrong? eagles123 http://www.bridgebase.com/forums/public/style_images/BridgeBase_Ehren_v1/user_popup.png thinks 2♦ possible with a very strong 5-card diamonds. I would still disagree but could see it being possible. kenrexford thinks bidding on 4♦ is ok, I just can't see, this is easily could be a 4-2 or 4-1 fit, why even bother. but the real point you should pick up is that every bid your expert partner made is even worse the last bid isn't bridge and Diana_eva told what you could do about it. -
Excessive HCP requirements for competitive bids
steve2005 replied to iandayre's topic in GIB Robot Discussion
Programming bidding in competition is difficult. Looking at books produced on the subject shows the problem. Eric Crowhurst wrote two bidding books on Acol. The one that covers partner opening and opponents silent is relatively slim and covers most situations. His book on competition is huge, took him forever to produce and doesn't cover huge areas of bidding even in a general way. So, I think it is easy to see why programming a computer for bidding in competition would be a problem. With a computer program, you can't cover all hands you can only set rules to follow in hands you can't cover specifically. That said, it would be nice to balance or sacrifice without being raised on mediocre hands without trick taking capability. But I have no idea if Gib's program can be easily made to accommodate this. -

Sorry esteemed one 2♦ is insane. For all you know it's our hand, 1NX makes and we can punish the opponents in all suits. OK maybe I'm dreaming but my point is let partner decide that's what they are there for. -
So hopefully they learned people psych. Maybe even learned what to do. The director had the completely wrong reaction.

Benji is a convention which takes up useful space for very rare hands. How many hands do you get a month? Is horrid to use when you are strong with hearts, find a way in your methods to open 2♣. http://www.bridgebase.com/forums/public/style_images/BridgeBase_Ehren_v1/snapback.pngLiversidge, on 2016-January-22, 06:42, said: Looking to the future, what would you recommend as an alternative to Benji, so I can look more closely at it? Are there any sources showing possible "subtle agreements" you could point me too Just a weak 2♦ is underrated.. You can play very undisciplined and if you have a good suit you can open at 3-level like you would have to do with clubs. Looking for something different- 2♦= 4441 17-24 (blue team) and 19-20 balanced (or 20-21) This frees up 2N as a preempt with both minors which is potentially even more effective than a weak 2♦. Taking out the 4441 hands from 2♣ really improves your bidding there. Yes, there is a way to show even bigger 4441 hands after 2♣ I leave as an exercise.

if your asking how do you load a FD file onto BBO so you can use it? see below. Step 1 : create an fd file-I believe you have done this. Step 2: log into BBO using the windows client-this may be a problem as users who joined after a certain date re unable to login this way. Step 3: click on CONV button near bottom of your screen Step 4: click Work convention card- Clicking USE - this will load the last FD file you edited automatically. If you want other files use open button to find the one you want Step 5: logoff bbo Step 6:: login BBO using the regular web version step 7: go to convention cards, find the card you just uploaded and click on edit, change the partner to who you are playing with step 8: play with this partner and that convention card will automatically load

Simple Forcing Question
steve2005 replied to Adam1105's topic in Intermediate and Advanced Bridge Discussion
Hey it's not my idea and is very common but I will defend it. Say partner opens 1♣ and you have ♠K432 ♥J9543 ♦543 ♣3 You don't have a a WJS to save you, 1♣ all passed out can easily be a disaster at MP or vul at imps Is better to find a better part-score imho. I would rather bid 1♥ and take my chances passing any rebid. Partner rebids 2N you may still be able to sign-off in 3♥ if playing Wolf sign-offs. If your playing a short club 2+ as I do responding like this is even more important. -
Simple Forcing Question
steve2005 replied to Adam1105's topic in Intermediate and Advanced Bridge Discussion
1♠ is just plain NF. I don't remember whether I saw it here or on bridgewinnners.com , but most people advocated responding to 1♣ or 1♦ on very little (perhaps 3 or 4 hcp) perhaps even 0 HCP, when you are short in opener's minor. Now if your doing this to keep out of a bad 1♣ or 1♦ contract you will be passing 1♠ as bidding again will almost guarantee getting too high. -
A simple correction is to play jump in the other minor as GF. 1♣-2♦ or 1♦-3♣. This is similar to criss-cross without adding complexity of inverted minors. SAYC has problem as Acol with this type of hand - no forcing raise.

Excessive HCP requirements for competitive bids
steve2005 replied to iandayre's topic in GIB Robot Discussion
4♣ is a pretty mandatory bid at mp. 4♠ is just out of lala land. Were a human partner to pull this, probably wouldn't be playing with them much after this. -
Actually it does matter. On a ♥ lead Gib could take all the tricks (DD). Besides leading spades is so obviously the best chance to take the most tricks if there were tricks to be had. This is a well know flaw in Gib defense. Another Gib flaw is the almost total lack of signals. If you go back to last year where cheaters were using illegal signals to gain an unfair advantage. Think how much better Gib would be if it paid attention to partner's signals and Gib itself gave legal signals. A typical example, partner has an entry and can cash setting tricks in NT. Wouldn't it be nice if you could signal which suit the entry is in?

Doubling of a suit overcall of partner's weak 1NT
steve2005 replied to Liversidge's topic in Novice and Beginner Forum
As Cyber says is playable either way as long as both of you on same page. However, if people are overcalling indiscriminately over your 1N it may be a good idea to have a penalty double in your arsenal. Note: it is still possible to collect a penalty playing negative doubles but is a more advanced topic. -
If 3♣ to play 2♣ would be -4. if North still not sure 3♣ is artificial he could ask.

BBO Skill - How often updated?
steve2005 replied to Dinarius's topic in General Bridge Discussion (not BBO-specific)
It's data is over 2 years old, is useless. -
Yes, your right that Gib only thinks about current round of bidding. One of the first things I was taught about bidding is to consider what your rebid is going to be. But thus hand is just silly. Is Gibs system to balance with a double as an unpassed hand on most 9+pts hands in balance? Surly you should be able to bid a suit with as much as 16 or 17 points or whatever range you use which is beneath a double followed by bidding a suit.

What your suggesting is completed already with full disclosure. Yes, to upload the bbs file for full disclosure you needs to use the windows version. Once loaded you can use in browser version. There are already full disclosure cards readily available on BBO for 2/1, SAYC, Precision, WJ2005, Old Acol, Goren Kiss, BBO Italian and French Standard. If you look around the web you can find other systems available. You can edit these to your hearts content making them simple or as detailed as you want. http://fulldisclosure.azurewebsites.net/FD/ Why you would need for RKCB I don't know? It's not alertable and people play different ace asking bids. Full disclosure never caught on which I think is too bad,. I suspect because of the amount of work needed for each partnership.

Yes, like really. Poster is worrying about suit lengths, when the real question should be how do I do something forward going for my first bid? 1♠ is a joke for first bid! The only negative to this hand is lack of aces.

How do I print a convention card with the proper aspect ratio?
steve2005 replied to johnbla's topic in BBO Support Forum
If you use the BBO CC it will always either be too short by about 1/3 of a page or stretched. What you can do is in upper right hit open in new window this new web page can be printed you need to use landscape to get it to fit Depending on your software you may be able to save as JPG I have to put in PDF Then I can convert pdf to jpeg then crop it too your liking. Can keep as jpeg or put into your favorite editor you could stretch the jpeg to a 4:3 ratio but writing will appear elongated Using a CC editor is better just don't make mistakes lol -
Gib needs to take a beginner's bridge lesson. lol

The Rebid Problem
steve2005 replied to TrampledUF's topic in Intermediate and Advanced Bridge Discussion
Statistically it is right to open 1N on almost all 5332 hands 1N unless your playing Gazzilli or something similar. There are lies, damned lies and statistics. I trust in my bridge judgement, playing standard I pick the prime hands to open 1N based on: 1) A solid or semi-solid major 2) A poor major 3) 3 cards in the other major Picking only these hands or other hands suitable for NT such as hands with a couple of empty Kings etc means when you open 1N with a 5-card major you have significant odds in your favor not just the statistical advantage of 52% or whatever it is. Use your judgment.
