6NT, you want to be in it and play?
kgr replied to kgr's topic in Intermediate and Advanced Bridge Discussion
...thinking about it: If you start on ♥ it is probably best to play a ♥ to the K to reduce the chance that LHO returns ♥ when it looses? -
I play 2D multi. For agreements that I have with my partner see: - web site in signature in this post - click "My system" - select "disable undefined bids" (deselect competitive & they open) - select 2D For our defense against 2D multi: - click "Opps open multi 2C/2D" - select "disable undefined bids", "competitive" & "they open" - select 2D (Undo does not always work correctly, use Reset if undo runs into problems. I'll correct that when I've more time).

IMPs, teams[hv=pc=n&s=skj942hakq64d2ca2&n=sqt3ht832dakq5c43&d=s&v=b&b=7&a=1hp2n(4cH%2C%20GF)p3s(2nd%20suit)p4hp4n(RKC)p5c(1%20or%204%20of%205)d5hppp]266|200[/hv] Actual bidding in diagram. Beside opening 1♥ iso 1♠, what could have been done better? Suppose the bidding would start (SA, not 2/1!, not (Non-)serious 3NT): 1♠-2♦ 3♥-3♠ (does North have enough for 3S?) ..easier with ♠-fit because South can find Norths ♠Q. Actually East was dealer. At our table East opened 2♣ mini-precision (Weak with ♣, if only 5c♣ then also a 4cMajor): (2♣)-3♣!-3♦ 3♥-4♣ 4♦-4♥ 4NT-5♣ (DBL)-6♥-AP Not clear what N-S meant with this bidding (even not after asking them).

IMPs, teams (opps are a bit weaker then your team) [hv=pc=n&s=saq74hkjdaj5cak92&n=sk62h853dkq63cq64&d=s&v=0&b=11&a=2d(multi)p2h(pass/correct)p2n(22-23)p3c(puppet)p3d(1%20or%202%204cMajor)p4n(Quantitative)p5c(4cC%2C%20Max)p6nppp]266|200[/hv] What do you think of the bidding? In 6NT LHO starts ♦8 (Opps play small is promising an honor) Opps are reasonable, but not very strong. Do you hope to run 12 tricks from top or is it better to play a ♥ to ♥J early in the play? (hoping that it looses to LHO ♥A or to his ♥Q and he does not return a ♥)

I wonder what is the minimum strength to bid against a preempt and when to choose DBL or to bid ♥. The hands are given as examples, but more general advise is very welcome All IMP's (Is your bid different at MPs) First two hands come from Yesterdays team match (IMPs). Other two hands are to clarify my questions. [hv=pc=n&s=s52ha9642dq4cak63&d=e&v=b&b=10&a=3s]133|200[/hv]Is this enough to bid? What would you do in balancing? If DBL in direct or balancing: What if ♣ and ♦ are switched? [hv=pc=n&s=sahat7632dqj4ckjt&d=w&v=b&b=4&a=2spp]133|200[/hv]This was actual hand of Yesterday. 3♥ is obvious? What if Opps opened 3♠. Or if bidding was 2♠-P-3♠? [hv=pc=n&s=sa2hat542dqj3ckjt&d=w&v=b&b=4&a=2spp]133|200[/hv]Or with 2c♠ and 5c♥: 2NT? Again: What if Opps opened 3♠. Or if bidding was 2♠-P-3♠? [hv=pc=n&s=sahat642dqj52ckjt&d=w&v=b&b=4&a=2spp]133|200[/hv]Or with Singleton ♠ and 5c♥: DBL? Again: What if Opps opened 3♠. Or if bidding was 2♠-P-3♠?

See also http://www.bridgebase.com/forums/topic/56452-2nt-both-minors-weak/page__p__678902__fromsearch__1#entry678902 I think scrambling is best if you have max x points, Lebensohl otherwise. x to be set...I would say 8.

I used some system help and not sure if this will all be correct: ♠-suit in isolation according to suitplay: Run ♠Q: - LHO has ♠x: 12.43% - LHO has ♠K: 6.22% In isolation running ♠Q or T is better. If LHO has ♠KJx then we cannot win if ♦-finesse looses. If LHO has K87 then running ♠Q looses to his ♠K. ♦-finesse looses to RHO ♦K. RHO play a ♣, ruffed low in hand and LHO has to overruff with ♠7 (otherwise we play ♠A and ♠9 next). LHO can return another ♦ taken by ♦A, but we can ruff a ♦ next with ♠9 and play ♠A. According to simulation in Jack it is slightly better to finesse ♦ in trick 2. (According to simulation in Jack it is slightly better to run ♠Q than running ♠T. I don't know why.)
-
Ok. Thanks. (This is if LHO has ♠KJ?) If you run the ♠Q then RHO will cover with his singleton ♠K and you play the ♠A. You play another ♠ to ♠T loosing to LHO ♠J. LHO now has to play ♦ to give you difficulty. Isn't that the same as running ♠T and RHO having ♠J ♥Qxxx ♦Kxx ♣A10xxx ? If you play ♠A and another ♠ and LHO has K8x then you have the same issue? LHO takes the K and returns a ♦ and you have to guess how to come back to your hand?
-
Does that really help? If trumps break 2-2 you will make with both lines. If trumps are 3-1 then they take ♠K and return a trump and you can not longer ruff a ♣

[hv=pc=n&s=sa9632hak4d43ck62&n=sqt54h63daq852cq5&d=n&v=n&b=5&a=pp1sp2n(4cS%2C%20limit+)p4sppp]266|200|IMPs[/hv] Lead small ♥. I took ♥A, played a small ♣ to ♣Q and ♣A for RHO. RHO returned a ♥. I played ♥K, ♥-ruff, ♣K and ♣-ruff. I did then run ♠Q. (From the play it is not clear if ♥ & ♣ were 4-4 or 5-3) - you agree with this line? - It doesn't matter to run ♠Q or ♠T? If this ♠ looses to LHO, is it best to run a ♠ again or to play ♠A? - Is it better to do one of the ruffs with ♠T or ♠Q?

what would DBL iso 4C be? Is that an invitation to bid 4C?

a board from the club
kgr replied to jillybean's topic in Intermediate and Advanced Bridge Discussion
same for me -
I meant a 5c♠
-
I liked this one. - I answered all questions correctly, so I think it is best for intermediates but also useful as a refreshment for advanced players. - I think text is as well as voice. They look strange when I play it at work & text is maybe easier if non-native English. - The summary was a bit too much detail for me, but possibly more useful for intermediates. Question: Is the play best if you don't trust opponents much. LHO can also be 5=3=3=2?
-
That clarifies it, thanks.

BBO Movie: Winners at the 2012 Monaco Cavendish Pairs
kgr replied to inquiry's topic in Bridge Material Review
I agree. I rated the movie as below average for this reason. -
Thank you for the answer Mike. (I didn't understand the 2 previous posts and wondered what was wrong with OP. Your answer was a relief.) Yes, that was a stupid question. (When posting I thought that I had to do this correct from the first time  ) It was MP's, but against Jack. I was almost sure that RHO had ♦K.

[hv=pc=n&s=skj73hq86djt4ckj9&w=s5hak542d8c&n=saqt964h7da65ca54&e=s82hj93dq3c&d=s&v=e&b=3&a=p2d(multi)4sppp&p=h3h6hkh7d8d5dqd4hjh8h2s4s6s2sks5hqhasth9sas8s3h4s9d3sjh5]399|300[/hv] Opps lead 3th/5th and Italian discards. Do you agree with the play till now and how do you continue? Is it best to play ♦A and ♦ now and how do you play ♣ then?
-
Thanks all for the answers. I was south and thought that 2S was forcing. I think it is in majeure cinquieme, and it is easier if it is forcing. With my regular partner I play it forcing. My plan was: 1S 2S 3D, and maybe my hand is too good for that.
-
see OP. 2NT iso 2S is 15+

IMPs [hv=pc=n&s=skqj752hadKt74c62&n=sa6hj2dA985cqt9864&d=n&v=n&b=5&a=pp1sp2cp2spp3h3sppp]266|200[/hv] first time partner with few agreements: - Not 2/1 GF - Not agreed if 2S was forcing, apparently not. - 2NT iso 2C would have been GF with 4cS - 2NT iso 2S would be 15+ How should bidding have gone?

This is now available on: http://bss2html.atspace.cc/ with example bss files on the server. Any comments welcome: I tested it in IE7, Firefox 10 and Opera Mobile. Let me know if it also works in other browsers (iPhone?). If you notice a bug or have a change request then you can let me know here.

What 2 hands are you referring to?
-
This is a spin-off of another post: 1♥-(2♠)-Pass-(Pass) DBL-(Pass)-2NT!-(Pass) 3♦ Suppose you agreed that 2NT=Lebensohl What is 3♦? Can it be a minimum hand with 2551 that wanted to DBL first in case partner had a penalty pass? Or is it always extras?
