calling all experts
sceptic replied to jillybean's topic in General Bridge Discussion (not BBO-specific)
I am curious about this statement, why do you say things like this ???, I find you extremelly irritating at times, it is pretty obvious there will be weak players in BIL, I actually thought that was the idea of the Club, so they have somewehere to play where they do not have to meet experts like yourself that don't get any enjoyment out of playing with weak players. Maureen should ban you for being over qualified -

I would not like to see an exam to get into this club as I could fail or pass on a good or bad day but I am sure I would benefit from the lessons If some of the BIL teachers were to teach at this level would the time available to them take them away from the BIL (I do hope not) Sustainability?, did not someone else try something along these lines Maureen has successfully managed BIL since it started with the help of some very nice hardworking people, she is also a tireless trooper and I have to take my hat off to her. I hope you realise what you are taking on Jilly, if you make half the success of this as Maureen has of BIL, I will take my hat off to you as well. I also hope that lessons are not scheduled along side BIL lessons -

Hi, I was considering running a tournament where the first hand bids 3NT and everyone else passes out it would be set on mps and you just play the hands out I would like comments on what you think you would gain (if anything) i.e. would it test your defence and signals with your partner my thoughts are everyone is in the same situation, so you would have to take great care in signals, to try and win as many tricks as you possibly could, I realise with random hands you would get some odd results but you would have no clues to layout of the cards you would just have to try and make as many tricks as possible

Topic for an intermidiate level course
sceptic replied to Flame's topic in Intermediate and Advanced Bridge Discussion
personally I think to much time in intermedaite level is spent bidding, teach people our level, to play better and defend better (this includes counting and visualising etc) and most importantly teach our level how to communicate with each other -

Dummy lays down and here are some of his cards Spades Ax Hearts xxx Clubs KQ1098 Here are your cards Spades Kxxxx Hearts Axx Clubs Axxx scenario 1 = opps arrive at 3NT with out mentioning spades scenario 2 = opps arrive at 3NT and declarer has opened 1 spade scenario 3 = opps arrive at 3NT and declarer has bid spades but not opened them we are silent through out also as an aside. is the merrimac coup something an intermediate player should be using or learning, it does not look like a very advanced play (though I am happy to be shot down in flames if you disagree) (please note my example may not be perfect, but I am trying to understand the merrimac coup, I have made up some cards to see if my understanding is ok) Partner leads the Q of hearts I over take and then I fire back the K (unsupported honour) to knock out the dummies entry. the questions I have are 1/. What considerations do I have to take into account when opps do not bid the suit (with the single entryin spades) 2/. What considerations do I have to take into account when opps have either opened a spade or bid a spade in the auction In the example hand, how do my other hounours help decide this is a merrimac coup (i.e. is the club stopper a major influencing factor to return the K of spades rather than returning partners hearts) or have I completely missed read the situation?

if in any given hour, 5 tourneys run with no kibbers, and each has 20 tables, that equates to 400 people you cant kib, if 4000 are on line that means 10 % of people can't be kibbed. why is it such a problem, that we keep going over old ground. there are 3600 more to watch (well 3599 if you exclude watching yourself). There are some great players here to watch and I think you will find they don't all play kib barred at the same time. I persoanlly find being invisible is a worse crime, but at the end of the day it is their choice and that choice is there for all of us to take.

What to do until the next board comes up?
sceptic replied to 42's topic in General Bridge Discussion (not BBO-specific)
try this one "I am not a pheasant plucker, I am a pheasant pluckers son, I only pluck the pheasants when the pheasant pluckers done" repeat six times until you have it word perfect -
I would play the 7 and cover anything or let it ride Then finese the Q
-
sad, really Jilly, I doubt you are the first to quit for that reason and I doubt you will be the last, hope you change your mind eventually

From the top or finesse?
sceptic replied to Walddk's topic in Intermediate and Advanced Bridge Discussion
low to A I doubt I could guess if the 10 is a false card or not, I assume some clues from bidding would be available but a 5/1 split is lower percentage and if it is split 6/0 with entries to dummy you make 5 anyway as left hand O would have all 6 if he played the 10 any other split and you make 5 tricks anyway the only split that can hurt you is 5/1 with right hand O having 5 so if left hand O shows up with 5 to the Jack y0ou would have to end play him for the 5th trick -
sorry if I did not explain myself uday (usual problem for me) what I am suggesting is that when a few TD's run a tourney, one of them is a bridge TD and the others are controlling disconnects etc Two levels of TD i.e. proper TD's for rulings and SUB TD's for connection issues etc now we could have two call buttons on the table one for director calls and the other button for disconnects or red dots An example would be SHEPs teaching tourneys (I am only using SHEP as an example) "SHEP" deals with questions the BIL members have and "GEOFSPA" deals with connection problems and announcements etc people playing will private message "SHEP" for help I was looking at larger tourneys where the same priciple could be in play SHEP = qualified TD and GEOFSPA = Sub director / helper (what ever you want to call him) This would allow the TD (SHEP in this example) to only deal with queries and whatever and means they would not be distracted by calls for connection problems I think this would be advantageous in very large tourneys i.e. over 100 tables
-
How many tables can you comfortably direct?
sceptic replied to Rain's topic in BBO Tournament Directors Forum
I think 30 is a good number to manage on your own, I have run larger tourneys and they can be easy to manage, BUT, when you get connection problems or quite a few deserters, 1 person running 50 or 60 tables will get a sweat on and probably get a bad name for themselves. I think if you had someone dealing with rulings etc (see my suggestion for software) . one person could manage a max 100 tables with out a lot of problems -
Hi Fred, Uday Is it possible (for you) to allow us to create a Tourney with a director that is not linked to a group of tables and having all aceess to the Tourney facilities. Perhaps a button or option to call the director, not one of the people controlling disconnects and various other tasks involved in running Tourneys. I am only asking this as, if someone wants to make decisions, rulings etc etc, they are free to do so in an unpressuirsed environment and any SUB Directors can controll the disconnects etc etc. possibly even allow more than one director (then this facility can be used to train directors)
