I think he has a hand that cant open, so maybe 10+hcp and has 6 hearts probably good ones, I don't think it is forcing and he has no interest anywhere else, prob 2!S losers poss1C and poss1!D and poss a heart loser so I think I would pass, even if we were vuln at imps, if I had Jx hearts and one less club I would raise to game if he makes 6 heart tricks and 2 aces you still need him to come up with 2 more winners

what did I do wrong
sceptic replied to sceptic's topic in Intermediate and Advanced Bridge Discussion
I never rebid diamonds, one of the things I am trying to establish, is what my mistakes are given opps bidding and wheteher or not I am at fault for my continuations and how to improve on them I only really play basic sayc now, I am trying to get the basics right, so I don't really try any advance crap I can't deal with and I disagree with a 3NT bid after 2 diamonds but I may be wrong -
I bid 1 heart over p's opening 1 diamond I then bid 2 spades encouraging a forcing situation (I hope) as 3 diamonds is not forcing (I was looking for 3NT) pards 3 heart bid was 3 cards (I assumed and denying a club stopper) what do you think of the bidding so far and how badly judged was my 4diamond bid? what should I have done/ here is the hand thx [hv=d=n&v=n&n=sa54ht9654d4ckj84&w=skq6haq73dk85ct53&e=sjthj82dajt62caq7&s=s98732hkdq973c962]399|300|Scoring: IMP[/hv] West North East South - Pass 1♦ Pass 1♥ Pass 2♦ Pass 2♠ Pass 3♥ Pass 4♦ Pass Pass Pass

Hi, This is me bidding x then 2 diamonds, I would like to know if 1/. 2 diamonds is forcing one round in sayc 2/. was my raise to 4 spades poorly judged after the 2 spade rebid? here is the hand [hv=d=s&v=n&n=s863ht6dk952cqt32&w=saj7ha9daqt83ca75&e=skt542hj32dj74c86&s=sq9hkq8754d6ckj94]399|300|Scoring: IMP[/hv] West North East South - - - 1♥ Dbl Pass 1♠ Pass 2♦ Pass 2♠ Pass 4♠ Pass Pass Pass

Two deaf people get married. During the first week of marriage, they find that they are unable to communicate in the bedroom when they turn off the lights because they can't see each other using sign language. After several nights of fumbling around and misunderstandings, the wife decides to find a solution. "Honey," she signs, "Why don't we agree on some simple signals? For instance, at night, if you want to have sex with me, reach over and squeeze my left breast one time. If you don't want to have sex, reach over and squeeze my right breast one time." The husband thinks this is a great idea and signs back to his wife, "Great idea, now if you want to have sex with ME, reach over and pull on my penis one time. If you don't want to have sex, reach over and pull on my penis... fifty times!"

That is not very BBO spirited of you, what about the FUN element of bridge and the fact most people that use bridgebase do so for a bit of social interaction as opposed to Playing bridge to the most rigid rules imaginable. I think if you had your way JD (with that statement) there would be no free tourneys and I am sure that some of the pay tourneys would have to shut down also. That would leave tourneys only run by ACBL directors. so we would all end up paying and playing for points that are worthless to anyone but an american point collector I actually beleive that a lot of people play in the free or pay tourneys as it is a better way to play a stable game than taking a flyer in the main lounge, not as many table hoppers.

the last tourney I ran I was in a tourney with a playing TD (as it turned out there were 3 TD's 2 playing and 1 missing, it started to go badly as no call were being answered and I could see from the comments to the Tourney thats things were not going well, I sugested to the playing TD that he subsitute me out of the game and I would help him direct. I ran the tourney on my own (so it seemed)(to a fashion) to try and help out, I do not believe there were many yllows available and I know that they were aware and being actively helpful I may add. The creator of the tourney had not run many and I can't remeber how many tables there were but it was an obscene amount for playing TD's (maybe Ben can check the amount of tables as he seems to be able to do anything :P I would also like to make a comment before someone trys to shoot me down in flames for not being a TD of note (i.e. I am not ok with Bridge Laws, but would like to improve thats why I watched the training session the other day), but I am competant to manage the mechanics of a tourney. I believe everyone should have the right to run free tourneys and I applaud BBO for allowing us to do this. I would like to see someone (who suggested this sometime ago) to do beginner director training for directors. I also think Ben is right that playing TD's should be limited to a small amount of tables ( this enables small groups of friends to play together when a team game is restricted to 8 players, so I think playing TD's are a good thing in the right context. I also think that all new, possibly just all dierctors should be limited to 30 tables max, maybe work on lusobrasil's suggested limitations. I have another suggestion for running tourneys, I think I suggested it before so I will do it again. 1/. you have main directors (this is for bridge law etc etc) 2/. Sub directors (those that want to learn under the guidance of a competant director (maybe access privileges to follow the director and see all the chat that occours between the main director and the players) i.e a mentee 3/. Host, helpers or controllers (call them what you will) but people that are specifically called for red dot and connection issues, subbing and the like. (future mentees, I am sure there are a lot of people that would like to learn from a good TD I am not a programmer so I have no idea how hard this would be, but it would mean changing the call butons for a director or a host (see 3/.) and a limit set of the number of tables one director can run If none of this seems viable, how about, the TD that sets a Tourney up and fails to show is auto banned for 4 weeks or what ever is considered fair , but has the option to regain privallages after an satisfactory explanation.

well I can see we have some very astute people here Josh, Theakstons Old Peculiaris spot on good choice (you may wish to try Greene King Abott Ale in there, my favorite all time beer, Consiliation Ale is a close second) Richard, Australian beer is like piss (almost correct, but some of it is not that strong) most English Beers (of note) and I can list probably 20 - 30 of the top of my head that would come in the top 100 beers in the world. England rules as far as beer is concerned, I am not biased in this opinion, I am just stating a fact. I find it offensive that wine should be mentioned in a beer post, you should start your own post under good quality antifreezes, with special consideration for Czech wine as a first rate engine treatment

What if I click "sit" and everybody runs!
sceptic replied to Wsue601's topic in Intermediate and Advanced Bridge Discussion
Sue, glad you are enjoying BIL, I think you will find that is what Maureen created it for :P Just stick in there and don't quit after 2-3 hands, sit longer and get to know some of the people in BIL they are very nice and you will improve as you play more. I think in BIL it is totally acceptable to ask ur partner what a bid means if you don't know, during an auction. I know some excellent players that announce this as you sit down at a table in the main lounge, if you dont know then ask  -
A couple questions...
sceptic replied to rcbought's topic in Intermediate and Advanced Bridge Discussion
I can't really answer the question correctly, but, I now have "Bridge The standard plays of Card Combinations on Flash Cards" by Devyn Press. It is Alan Truscott. I have found these to be excellent help in playing cards at the table, they are quite cheap and easy to learn from. there are around 130 cards to learn both NT and suit contracts -
I forgot to mention Beach Volleyball is as good a spectator sport

On the lighter side of bridge............. A house maid was applying for a new position, and when asked why she left her last employment, she replied: Yes sir, they paid good wages, but it was the strangest place I ever worked for. They played a game called bridge and last night a lot of folks were there. As I was about to bring in the refreshments, I hear a man say, "Lay down and let's see what you've got." Another man says, "I got the strength but no length..." And another man says to a lady: "Take your hands off my trick." I pretty near drop dead just then, when a lady answered: "You forced me. You jumped me twice when you didn't have the strength for a raise." Another lady was talking about protecting her honor, and two other ladies were talking and saying: "Now it's time for me to play with your husband and you can play with mine." Well, I just got my hat and coat and was leaving, I hope to die if one of them didn't say: "I guess we'll go home soon. This is my last rubber."

I agree with Jilly, except I would go so far as to say watch out for half the self rated advanced as well

I play sometimes against polish club and precision opponents and also some weird systems played by a lot of mad brits and I have no idea what to bid or how to defend against these. (anyway that may not be relevant) my question is, what merit is there in someone of my level, intermediate (I hope) learning 3 or 4 systems and huge amounts of conventions, when I find that I can not play one system properly and I have gaps in my ability bidding and playing (I have on my profile SAYC and 2/1, neither of which I consider I am advanced at). I just see some people that I do not consider any better or worse than me learning precision, acol, sayc and 2/1, should I be doing more or should they be doing less? ( I do read and do try and attend lessons and I have an excellent mentor and I attend some excellent teachers sessions as and when I can) Should I learn more conventions so I know what I am up against when the opps use them? Should I stick with one system only? Should I stick with the 2 systems I am learing as it makes it easier to play with pick ups? Should I learn more defences to conventions?
