  1. [hv=pc=n&n=skhajt52daq965ct3&d=w&v=0&b=8&a=p1hp2cp2dp3np]133|200[/hv] any bid here 1 - at MP 2 - at IMPS 3 - if the K spade was a low one instead Thanks, Eagles
  2. Yes overcalling with 4 isn't normally the done thing in Acol (at least at my level) but I can see why it might be the best bid due to the problem with diamonds :)
  3. interesting one! I would win Ace of hearts, club to the king, spade finesse (if it wins, then ace of spades - as to get back to dummy to take a second finesse I'm massively risking a club ruff and they would become blocked anyway. Also if the finesse works it doesn't really tell us that much because with Kxx LHO would surely duck anyway?). If the miracle happens and it's Kx then get the last trump out.. then Ace of clubs and run the clubs in dummy chucking the Hearts... but obviously if spades are Kxx either side i'm screwed. the other option is to try and ruff a couple of hearts in dummy straight away but I don't think that's a particularly great line as we'll still have a heart loser and will be relying on stiff K spades? 4. thx folks, happy to admit I was wrong here :) This happened in a post-mortem teaching session. I chose to X. My thought was I had 4 of the other major, a pretty strong hand and if P was to bid 2D then it was fairly likely to be a 5 card suit so it was worth the risk. But I can see with no votes so far it was the wrong action! Thanks, Eagles
  5. 1 club followed by 2N seems clear playing 15/17 NT?
  6. presume Matchpoints [hv=pc=n&e=sakj9h975d84cak85&d=n&v=0&b=1&a=1h]133|200[/hv] any bid here Thanks Eagles
  7. would love someone to do a sim of balanced 8 count with at least 4 hearts opposite Kx AJX AKQJx xxx and see how often 3NT made
  8. so when p has a balanced 8 count and passes when 3N is cold whats my excuse in the post mortem? seriously mate I am no expert but at the same time i'm no mug and I know what you are saying is total rubbish. if I knew how to ignore someones posts I would do!!!
  9. hmmm yes I thought DBL was so clear at the time I think it was just because I had a strong hand... but yes 2 clubs much better I see that now.
  10. [hv=pc=n&s=s982haj5d842cak64&d=n&v=0&b=1&a=1d1sdp3dp3s]133|200[/hv] my question here is about my 3 spade bid: I thought it was purely asking for a spade stop to bid NT, another player on the table (not my partner) lectured me afterwards on how I should have something in spades myself to make the bid, i.e. Jxx the hand was a disaster when p bid 3N with singleton K of spades and A was lead = 6 tricks from the top lost! comments welcome about the X as well of course although I think that's kinda clear? Thanks, Eagles
  11. I have hardly ever questioned any advice i've recieved on this forum but if you're suggesting after 1D - 1H with 2353 19 count and no club stop i should rebid 2D i struggle to accept you are an advanced player. That just seems like a totally crazy bid to me. If I didn't want advice I would either be arguing back the whole time or not posting on here at all!
  12. Reading your posts on here makes me doubt that and I don't claim to be anything other than a weak intermediate player at best. Eagles
  13. I think my weakness is part-scores and my strengths (although still very amateur!) are games/slams both in the bidding and play really.
  14. Thanks mgoetze very useful. I can see that I should play QH at trick one that does make sense now. The reason I played Diamonds that way is because I thought I had a heart loser, a spade loser and 2 club losers so if I played the J even if it held the trick how would I play Diamonds for no losers with only trumps as entry to hand. J diamond low low low spade to the ace ace diamond diamond ruff then how do i get rid of the last losing diamond? ruff a Heart high? that could then give defense an extra spade trick if they have say QJx in north? whereas if I overtake J with Q i don't have that problem if the K is with south? Thanks, Eagles
  15. Hi guys, similar to the previous one but want to do a new poll, matchpoints 3rd seat all vuln (playing 12-14 NT) A2 A7 J7543 AT84 obviously the diamonds and clubs are now 5/4 rather than 4/5 so there's always the club rebid but with Ax in both majors is 1N better? Cheers Eagles
  16. Matchpoints: [hv=pc=n&w=sak932h86daq62c75&e=st75haqj74djcqt98&d=w&v=e&b=16&a=1sp2hp2sp3sppp]266|200[/hv] Lead is 9 of Hearts, how best to play? The full hand: Thanks, Eagles
  17. PhilG007 you never answered my question:
  18. thanks all I think I was carried away with my luck streak earlier in the day through opps doing daft things! Will be more sensible next time :)
  19. Hi, thanks for your comments, just wondering how you would bid if say one of the low diamonds became a low heart? I wouldn't have cover in the black suits then either? Also for us 2NT rebid is a game force so sorry to disappoint! Thanks, Eagles
  20. Sorry but I find this post quite annoying, if you are suggesting the post should be in Expert or another section I apologise, but I'm sorry this is clearly not a N/B issue, most beginner players won't even be doing much competitive bidding unless it's very simple. If people wonder why I post topics that are at least intermediate in N/B forum, then here we go. Eagles
  21. 1NT opening bid is 12-14 1NT rebid is 15-18
  22. [hv=pc=n&e=sk8hajdakqj42c743&d=w&v=0&b=8&a=pp1dp1hp2n]133|200[/hv] I broke the rules on this one in 2 ways, firstly 2NT rebid should be 19-20 and secondly its not a "textbook" balanced hand if you like. My thought was, 1) 3D would be non-forcing whereas 2NT is game forcing and I think we definitely belong in game even if P is really minimum. 2) NT is probably best played from my side due to Kx holding in Spades. Again it worked well (everything seemed to work today, you know when the opps go 6NT - 6 on one of the first boards it's probably gonna be a good day ) but again not sure if the judgement is ok or lucky. Thanks, Eagles
  23. Matchpoints [hv=pc=n&e=sq74hakq94d5ca763&d=w&v=e&b=16&a=p1h]133|200[/hv] I chose to bid 1NT here. my thought was at this vulnerability we were probably better off playing than defending and if I passed 1H there was a possibility it would get passed out, maybe going down a couple whereas all P really needed for 1N to be on was a stop in Diamonds... It worked a treat as P had the Ace of diamonds and, amazingly, the J of hearts and we got a top for 1N + 1 but I'm not sure if it was a reckless bid that got lucky or if my reasoning was ok. Thanks, Eagles
