Some people will always self-rate way higher than their actual level, after a while you'll figure out who the genuine advanced/expert/world class are and who are the jokers!

I've been playing for about 35 weeks as a guest at my club simply because it's cheaper as a student and I really can't be bothered to pay out the membership fee. I have learnt however that any masterpoints I earn won't count until I become a member. I'm going to sign up so my partners points count (they requested i do so) but I have to say i couldn't give two hoots about these points and the ranking system. It seems to me just an attendance grade i.e. if you attend 1000000000 avents you're bound to rack up a few points? Am I wrong? Is there merit in the system?

For Beginners: This is your trump suit: AQ835 J42 how best to play the suit for 5 tricks? (you have a load of tricks elswhere so don't need ruffs) Eagles

I would open 2C and rebid 2NT, just a bit too good for 2N opening imo in terms of rebidding 2N or 2S i don't think it's close. Eagles

How To Make East Declarer
eagles123 replied to eagles123's topic in Intermediate and Advanced Bridge Discussion
Hi, that's exactly what happened and we got to 4H by W but obviously it's much better if East declares. -

MP Scoring Query
eagles123 replied to eagles123's topic in General Bridge Discussion (not BBO-specific)
Thanks! -
I don't know if this is universal, but sometimes in our results there will be a random 0.1 for getting a bottom and 0.1 less than full marks for getting a top: example How come on the bolded scores its not 22 - 0? and whats the difference to something like this when it is 22-0: obviously not a huge issue but just interested :) thanks, Eagles

How To Teach A Complete Beginner
eagles123 replied to eagles123's topic in General Bridge Discussion (not BBO-specific)
gosh given your bbf manner would love to see your teaching LOL if i was a novice i'd be running a million miles from you -
Hi all, A friend of mine is interested in learning bridge, and I was round his flat at the weekend and tried to start teaching him: firstly i told him about the rankings of the suits i.e s/h/d/c then I dealt out a few hands and showed him how it works (i.e. the idea of bidding (not so much what the bid means), what "dummy" is, who leads and how you make tricks etc. What is the best way to teach a genuine beginner with no previous bridge experience? Could anyone suggest a list of things I could teach my friend so he is able to at least get a foot hold in the game of bridge :) Thanks in advance, Eagles

Another competitive auction
eagles123 replied to jallerton's topic in Intermediate and Advanced Bridge Discussion
I pass. P didn't open so can only have either 5 spades or i guess longer spades and a very weak hand, but either way i'm reluctant to bid again. Yes we have a max WJO especially with p's bid, but in offense the KH will be next to useless whereas it could score a trick in defence. They might well have underbid and i'm reluctant to push them into either X'ing 4S or going to game somewhere on the imo quite unlikely chance that 4S is on? -
win the Ace of clubs, heart to Queen, K clubs chucking a diamond, heart to the Ace, heart ruff, low spade
-
well I think north is probably 5/2/3/3 the reason being If he had 3 hearts he'd probably support the hearts and if he had a 6th spade he'd probably bid 2 spades rather than letting it pass out. and i think he must have 3 clubs as otherwise he'd have 5 diamonds which would make east's overcall very unlikely. therefore i'm placing east with 3/4/5/1. Given he's overcalled 2D on a 5 card suit i'd expect it to be a pretty good suit and would place him with AQJxx. at a guess the overall hand is something like: [hv=pc=n&s=s7hqt765d32cakj76&w=sj862hk2dk75cqt43&n=skq943ha8dt84c982&e=sat5hj943daqj96c5]399|300[/hv]

How To Bid The (almost) Certain Grand
eagles123 replied to eagles123's topic in Intermediate and Advanced Bridge Discussion
Hi Wank, please read original post: clearly AKQxxx opposite xx is 6 tricks usually, but i'm talking about virtually certain slam...
