when opener bids the game force 3D why on earth would responder sign off in 4H????
-
I was playing with an 80 year old partner a few months ago and he opened the bidding (unopposed) 1H - 2C 3H - ? At this point i held a 4-2-2-5 18 count something like AQxx xx AQxxx AQxx so i thought lets just bid keycard! p respond 5S 2 keycards and the queen so on a high from previous board where we made slam i just bid 7NT the lead is a diamond and p puts the dummy down AK - 9 hearts and nothing else 7nt made :) Eagles

well yeah, I can't remember the exact hands but lho had a 3-4-2-4 19 count or something so should/could have bid 1NT so you make a very good point. Thanks, Eagles

thanks folks, I won't say whether the finesse worked or not because It's irrelevant, just wanted to see how other more expert pairs bid this and whether people bid the slam or not. Our bidding was: 1H - 2N 3D - 4D 4S - 4N 5D - 6H thanks, Eagles

again the teacher wins support! He was adamant that pass was right and I was so reluctant - I just saw P with a 4351 15 count or whatever where pass was a disaster. But your arguments have convinced me :) thanks folks, Eagles

Well on this the teacher was right! I have no qualms in admitting that as he is a very good player The reason I thought pass is because of the colours: if p has a monster hand we'll get a better score defending and if p has a moderate type of hand, then it's probably a 1s/1h contract anyway I can't remember the exact opp hands, but defending hearts was best on this deal (but i accept that was probably just luck)

[hv=pc=n&s=skj97hqj98dajtck7&n=sahakt73dq972cqj9]133|200[/hv] how do people bid this (MP) N deals thanks, Eagles

These hands came up in a teaching session teacher recommended one thing and I felt something else was kinda clear. interested in opinions :) [hv=pc=n&s=sj975hqt9863d87c7&d=e&v=e&b=6&a=pp1hdp]133|200[/hv] form of scoring: MP E/W play 4 card majors, will open the major with 4M4m32 thanks, Eagles

I'm no expert but I don't like South's bidding at all. I think the X is asking for trouble really, would prefer 3H to X Eagles

Most hopeless / clueless comment?
eagles123 replied to flametree's topic in General Bridge Discussion (not BBO-specific)
My Parnter picked up AKT KQJ742 A AKQ in 4th seat after p p p she opened 2C (8 playing tricks or 23-24 bal) rather than the game forcing 2D. and then proceeded to underbid even more by jumping to 4H when I myself made a GF bid meaning we missed an easy slam. I asked aftewards why she didn't open 2D -
thanks everyone for responses all very helpful.

South thought that he had bid his hand with 1NT and that X would be better than 3D on North's second turn North thought that 1NT was an underbid and that S should also have made some kind of move over 3D. Thanks, Eagles

Well I did pass which I thought was pretty obvious, but P had 9875 AQT2 QJ5 T9 game made easily enough and it was a bad score when most of the room were in 4 making rather than our 2+2. maybe others just saw the "5 loser hand" and thought they had to bid game lol? Eagles

honestly this is a topic that comes up so often it's boring. a lot of people are bad at self-rating get over it.

Thanks a lot for your all the comments: As I said in the spoiler I was N and my p South. @dboxley wouldn't I look a bit daft if p has xxx KQxx AQxx Axx and she was just looking for something in spades? @Zel Interesting - we haven't discussed splinters too much but this is pretty much a middle of the road splinter for us, i.e. make a low diamond into a low club and it's still a splinter and slam is what 10% or something but at the same time, make a small diamond into the K and slam is clear favourite and that would also be a splinter for us. Thanks, Eagles

[hv=pc=n&s=s8hkj982daq95ck82&n=sakt7ha653dt8762c&d=e&v=e&b=6&a=p1hp4cp4dp4sp6hppp]266|200[/hv] Firstly, comments on the bidding please I know it's a bit stretchy! Is there any more scientific way of doing it and is it somewhere you'd like to be? secondly, this is a slam that no-one else in the field will be in so the priority will be making the contract not worrying about overtricks, therefore when the hearts split and it's time to play on diamonds is there some kind of safety play rather than the usual finesse queen then bang down the Ace? Thanks, Eagles

thanks for the tip
