There was a French man called Ritong, Who stood out from the BBO throng, In one game, under duress, He took a finesse, And Farfie exclaimed 'Well, that WAS wrong!' ----- There was a French lass called Farfie, Who stood out more than her dear Henri, When she took a finesse, And claimed all the rest, She shouted "Thats how you do it, mon cheri!"

i too am a Math major... about 2 years ago i managed to be able to count up to 20 if i had a friend with me... since i stole the hands off a mannequin from my local tailor just over 22 months ago i can count up to this quite high number without a friend being present. i am so proud of myself! PS 3 months ago i stole the aforementioned mannequins feet, wanting to excel my numeracy to the dizzy heights of 30... If anybody has any use for a handless and footless mannequin could you please contact Mr M. Broidery 23, Hemmingway Place, London he wants to get rid of it so badly (xcuse pun) -
i agree Rebound. i think Justin, no disrespect J :) , (although if you DO find it disrespectful, dont say pls coz, in a moment of anguishing vulnerability, i might go through all my posts and delete them) made a rather sweeping statement. Just like any other mental endeavour, or even physical for that matter, requiring what we conventionally label as 'intelligence' certain people will always excel more than others. Its just like saying that i could paint a Mona Lisa!! Although, i have to say, i did paint my girlfriend, Betty, with crayon in the 3rd grade and her smile looked uncannily like a split watermelon. Got me my first kiss at least. If we are talking about the elevated heights of professional and competitive bridge, the evaluation of 'expertness' would become more and more skewed. I do think we ALL have the ability to become GOOD or BETTER card players, if we were to take an inordinate amount of time learning the game, but, IMHO, there comes a threshold beyond which you either got it or you aint. i would rather say the opposite, if i were to mke any assertion at all: EVERYONE can potentially become an expert bidder. These skills are more dependent on memory and less (although needless to say judgement is OF COURSE needed) on the more nebulous qualities of judgement, deduction and table presence that underpin good card-play. Geez i love being controversial and provocative.

Never mentioned his calves... Only thing i said to him was i thought that the color of his shoes didnt necessarily go with the shade of blusher and lipstick he was wearing. PS he the member of I-LACY not me :)

Dear Shoeless, these 2 men, and may i use that noun very liberally, and i wont mention their names (Jimmy and Marc) , dont bother me in the slightest... Lap them, lap them???? to use an Aesopian analogy, even if i were a unicycular-wheel-chair-bound tortoise (with a flat tyre), these 2 hares would be left standing. In a swimming contest against them, even if i were to dog-paddle they would be left gurgling in my wake... :) PS no dogs, hares or tortoises were harmed in the making of this post. PPS Although perhaps i shouldnt ask, is there any particular reason why you dont appear to wear shoes? I mean, if you take Jimmy and Marc for example, ever since they started wearing their partners stilettos their extra height has given them that added confidence. Peace bruzzers :)

Christ Mac :)) and these philistines accuse me of getting carried away with metaphor and prosaic lingo :)) Anyway back to biznezz.... I actually quite like the 3♣ bid especially in the context of being followed up with the 4♦ bid... when S can see both Aces in his hand in the suits that N cue bid S MUST know that N is aflush with the top spades..... there is no other explanation for his/her strong bidding on this auction with ♠ pin-pointed. i wouldnt say he was necessarily the shape he was but definitely telling his P that he can sniff a slam with the right cards opposite... AND that is exactly what S has after the minor suit cues.. The 5NT is obviosly a Grand Slam Inquiry. With the cards he has there is no other bid i can see other than 7♠

i would bid 6♣ on the strength of my singleton H and the assumption that he could have bid 4♣ forcing so he must have practically running ♣ (with my support) and values outside. Of course, i would tell Richie that i passed 5♣ so he could call me a chicken...and then point out that i had made a numerical typo...
-
sorry Marc i misjudged you and the number of people you must have begged to come to rally to your support.... perhaps we could lower it to circa 84%? (i dont count Jimmy.. he always champions the underdog) :) Alessio Seriously, nice to see you back (geez hard to type with your fingers crossed  ). I just hope you dont have to go back to the asylum too often for check-ups

Dread to think how excellent your German must be then Helen :) PS Marc, my friend, speaking for myself, and only 100% of the other people who frequent this forum yes it did :) :) :) PPS ..

I am going to deviate a bit here....coz i want to make a point and also because i a cant fall asleep and I hope that writing a lot of incomprehensible and tangential dialectic will make me drowsy . And i hope it validates what the majortiy of people are saying. It is 2:30 in the morning so bear with me ...and even then, slithering about in the mud has made me quite exhausted I want to take BRIDGE out of the equation, and thus shall be using a rather perverted analogy ..coz it seems (to me at least) that this argument is not about whether one particular system is better than a particular other but whether adopting a different system would have any bearing on ones success as a competitive bridge player. so the basis of the analogy is GOD (i am not evangelising ;) so please bear with me ) and the presumption that you believe he (or she for the Gaiaists amongst you :) ) exists. NB It may be of interest that i dont actually personally believe in God :) but i hope that does not invalidate my analogy :) So you believe in God and, as tradition, upbringing and culture dictate you believe in God through the credo of a religion and belief structure. It doesnt matter whether you are a Catholic, Protestant, Jew, Muslim, or a member of any other religious community, the common denominator is that you believe in God. Just as much as you believe in God you also accept that other people have different manifestations of him and you accept that. It would be foolish not to. You also accept that, even though you truly perceive your God as the one that is responsible for the creation of the (your) Universe, you do not deny that another person of another religion may perceive his own with the same passion and devotion as you do. But if you come together in conference with people from your own religion and from others you soon realise one overriding premise. The ones who have respect, and common respect, are not ones affiliated to any one particular religion but those who have FAITH in the God they happen to believe in, and live their lives in accordance to the rules (tried and tested) set down by that religion and make it their mission to ensure that they deviate as little as possible from their Chosen Way. If one person were to 'jump ship' through either disillusionment of his/her religion or because s/he believed the foundations of another religion suited his her changing philosophy, one does not necessarily question this persons FAITH in God, only that this person intends to worship Him/Her differently! So what am i getting at i hear you all cry in blasphemous cacaphony? What i am getting at is this: Like in bridge, it doesnt matter which God you believe in, but how much FAITH you have in the God you DO believe in. You can wake up one morning and decide to change your religion but what is crucial is not that you changed religion but how much that transition has affected the FAITH you have and the manner in which you intend to worship God. If the transition has given you more Faith, so much the better. Sometimes, your FAITH is unwavered, just that you feel more comfortable in your worship. It ain't the RELIGION per se, its the FAITH you have in it that allows you to worship the God you want to worship more effectively. Right, i feel sleepy now. Most likely, some of you will too, hee hee.
