When west leads 9♣ North shouldn't cover with 10. on the hand that made, gives declarer a winning option he wasn't going to take.

My report on the survey of a basic Gib hand
steve2005 replied to lycier's topic in GIB Robot Discussion
Ok, basic bot isn't as good as advanced bot. Ducking opening lead in a slam with AK in suit is inexcusable. Even someone who only played euchre or hearts before and never played bridge before would play an honor. -
From a bridge standpoint 1♦-2♣ as GF doesn't make much sense. Over a major you have a forcing/semi-forcing 1N to cover the 10-12 pts hands. Over 1♣ a forcing 1N is not available. You could bid either 2N or 3♣ with all invitational hand but this has problems. Generally if you have 5♣ you often don't want to play NT from your side and you may want to play in ♣ . People have other uses for 3♣ rather than a 6-card INV hand and can be shown easily with a 2♣ bid usually rebidding 3♣. Other common uses for 3♣ are a weak jump-shift, a strong jump-shift or an INV raise for ♦. I know of people who use 2♣ as GF, they fall into 2 categories 1) they don't what there doing 2) they have an elaborate system that works for them (possibly like Gazzilli)

doubles are for takeout, even if I got 93%
steve2005 replied to gwnn's topic in GIB Robot Discussion
With ♠ 3-3, you can pickup 4-1 ♥ break and make 4♥ Im surprised 200 a good score. Still not a great game to be in so perhaps GIB judged well. -
Forcing pass vs catch-all 1C
steve2005 replied to Kungsgeten's topic in Non-Natural System Discussion
Forcing pass not allowed in ACBL. from theory know very convenient with 16+ and 1♦ or higher as your FERT bid. also allows 1♣ as your neg response and 1♦ and above as transfers. Very convenient and allows 1♣ as your nebulous bid which is known to be better than 1♦ or at least that's what big 1♦ people say. not allowed here so kinda irrelevant -

ATB - who was too optimistic?
steve2005 replied to Jinksy's topic in Intermediate and Advanced Bridge Discussion
South has his bid, has no reason to be ashamed of 4♠ unless partnership agreement is to do high-level negative doubles on 6 pts -
While playing lower of touching honors helps. Declarer can freely false card so don't know who has K. That's why smith echo and other systems invented to let partnership know if lead liked.

GIB Release Notes - updated with each new version
steve2005 replied to Bbradley62's topic in GIB Robot Discussion
GIB used to miscount losers in response to blackwood, causing overbidding such as grand slams off the queen of trumps or even off a keycard. That will no longer happen. Bug not fixed see link to forum post below http://bridgebase.co...wn-cashing-ace/ -
Strong raise in Hearts not available.
steve2005 replied to 1eyedjack's topic in GIB Robot Discussion
Surely 4♣/4♦ have to be a good hand for one of the majors anyways?! Showing a suit at this point would be a waste of time. -
http://tinyurl.com/q3kgekr This isn't me, But the player took a shot at a MP top with 6N. Gib rewards him by bidding 7♠-1 having used keycard so knows off an ace and NT opener unlikely to have a void!? Thought miscounting keycards was fixed in last version.
-
Just to add - 2♣ can mean an inverted raise with a 2♦ minimum bid being non-forcing. One other idea with weak hand and no ♦ tolerance always takeout the double to another suit even with 0 pts. So passing infers tolerance for diamonds or a hand interested in penalizing which is shown by later doubling. Perhaps this is crazy but avoid 2-2 fits with a minimum opposite a weak hand.

ATB - who was too optimistic?
steve2005 replied to Jinksy's topic in Intermediate and Advanced Bridge Discussion
I disagree, the overcall improves North's hand considerably, their Kings are basically Aces. The problem is their still way too short to be inviting partner to play at the 3-level with such poor minor suits. -
Also of note if you do rebid 1N and partner bids ♣ as signoff or INV etc. You may be in 4-3 fit if partner has 3=4=3=3 distribution, so it's not so simple as you may think to play in clubs when it's right. Also may have poor 4-card suit you don't want to be in 4-4 clubs. with 5 clubs you want to show if you can.

Wow, that's sounds like a lot of bidding problems corrected. hope it works out! -

Say you have 5♠ balanced and INV. your gonna go 1N-2♥-2♠-2N. So with a 5-card ♠ invitation you've already decided your willing to play in 2N opposite a min with no fit. So what if you decide all your 5-card balanced ♠ go thru Stayman. Now, there is no reason you can't have your GF hands with 5♠ too. It is possible, now you can use 1N-2♣-3♥/3♠ for other things. Two possibilities are GF 4441 hands or GF hands with 0-1 cards not just the 4441. For ♥ it's realistic to use for INV+ with 5♥4♠ and some GF with 5♥. You can use Smolen at 2-level if you want. The trick is finding useful things for the bids freed up and remembering because you probably will be only playing this with steady partner. For a complete 1N system using 2M as Smolen see Revision on the Bridge systems with Dan site

no expert on squeezes but looks like not possible as you have to ruff 2♥ so there will not be communication to get to both threats. I believe the automatic squeeze is teachable to people who arn't yet intermediate its a fairly mechanical method.

Would you balance here?
steve2005 replied to hokum's topic in Intermediate and Advanced Bridge Discussion
It's not partner you have to worry about punishing you it's west. At MP even -1X is -200 and a bottom -
Play Precision then you can go 1M-4M on a lot of hands. lol but seriously you can change the responses, such that your only leaking if one of you has slam interest. but is work and non-standard.
-
While a nice rule has exceptions. I remember a hand where we had agreed ♠ and partner had bid 5N showing all KC and looking for 7. I bid 7♣ not a new suit) because it looked like a very good grand slam while 7♠ would have been iffy. I had undisclosed extra club length.
-
2♠ looks dangerous opposite a p who couldn't take a bid but know of people who would do it anyways at mp. 3♠ is just silly.
-
Why did Gib even double 5♣? It will be on lead and partner isn't bidding 6♣. Just gives info to opponents to stop in 5.
