If you play negative, then there are other problems you may have. So i dont see playing NFB as the way out. What do I bid here? I think i will pass. i know it is not a good bid. but it is least evil to me. Hongjun

Vul.: NS Dealer: North [hv=s=sa8643hq8dj93ckqt]133|100|[/hv] BID GOES W N E S -- 1S P 2N* 4N* P 5D ? 2N=JACOBY 4N=MINORS Does pd's pass imply anything? Thanks. Hongjun

cant agree more. Relay after a natural 2N is a bit wierd. I think if u play 2N as natural, then you should have some raise to show 4+ spt. Perhaps fit jump will do it.

Mike Lawrence suggested briefly that if high ranking suit has better quality, treat it as single suit hand. If low ranking suit has better quality, treat it as two suiter and bid michael or whatever. Pls refer to Dynamic defense, though he didnt say much about this.

You have three tricks for him, I think i will raise to 6c. 5C is definitely not weak preempt bid. He thinks he can make it facing a boring dummy. You have more than that, raise to 6. Hongjun

It's astonishing that so many bid 3NT here and no single vote for 3H. I strongly feel that 3NT is a losing option not because you don't have a lot of tricks, but because a hand contains a void usually belong to suits. When was your last time you played a 3NT with a void? When holding a void, the total tricks often increases if you find a fit, and 3D or 3H doesn't bar you from rebidding 3NT. Also, if your partner passes, you don't really mind playing at 3H or 3D, because in that case, 3NT would probably go down. So it's really a better choice to bid either 3D or 3H instead of huge distortion of 3NT. Also, if your partner bid 4S over your 3NT, you are totally dead. If you bid 3D or 3H, you may hear partner bid 3S which is most likely, and you can then bid 3NT to finish your description. There are some tiny difference between 3H and 3D. Your heart suit isn't strong, if you don't hit partner's long hearts, you may eventually go down several tricks. If you do hit, you may bid a game few might find it. If you bid 3D, the pay off might not be as handsome as 3H, and you might go down one or two less than 3H which might not be good either. Also, not everybody would open that 3C since you hold AKQx yourself, and you might have already been behind others pairs. Another thing I want to mention is that over 3C, pass can be a good decision, because your hand plays well against 3C which can be a sure plus with a little help from partner. And you might not be able to make a game due to a possible poor distribution or due to a broken partner. So pass can be a very sound option as well. My order is: 3H >3D > pass > 3NT > double 3H has a lot to say for it, but I really dont like 3D. With about 8HCP, pd will raise your 3H, but not 3D. Furthermore, the suit quality is very bad. Even for major suit contract, you are likely to find a bad break after RHO's preempt.

hehe, as you said, I would prefer to play 3N, if u play 4H and u r dummy, there is club ruff and u may go down immediately. RHO has nothign in c, so he is likely to have the DA.
-
This is not true. after 3N, pd's stayman will find you 4H.

This is matchpoint, let's follow the field. Most would play HA and then finesse HJ. So do I. Dont try sth special in MP without good reason.

Is this bidding correct?
flytoox replied to blover's topic in Intermediate and Advanced Bridge Discussion
Red vs white, 2S is not complete broke hand. The reason 2S is better is that 2S tells pd everything, while starting from 1s, you need to rebid 2s to show it. This may not be possible if Opps bid a lot. -
what if p dont open 2♠ just becouse he have 4♥ too? ;) This is easy, 4C stayman will bring you home.
-
Plus, dont do it with weak NT:)
-
Really? 2C openings are my second favorite opening in Precision, right behind 1NT. When we have game, it's easy to find. When we don't, it's usually very difficult for opponents. It's a perfect pre-empt when responder is weak, because opponents usually don't have the tools to explore game properly, while the clubs are long enough to sit after an X. Do most people find otherwise? Conventional wisdom among system designers holds that 2♣ = 6+ Clubs OR 5 Clubs and a 4 card major is a big loser. As I recall, most studies show that this is one of the worst performing bids in both Precision and Polish club. Richard, can you show where the study you quote comes from? I am curious about this. My humble opinion is 2c opening bid as 5c+4M isnt that bad as most ppl thought. Thanks in advance. Hongjun

The problem lies in the first bid, 1S. This hand should bid 2S after opp's takeout dbl. 1S shouls be stronger than 2S. After 2S, pd can bid 4S with good fit. There is no forcing pass after your weak jump over opp's takeout. Hongjun -
another possibility, opps take the push and bid 3s, then u will dbl:) I don't know that the vulnerable opponents will be kind enough to keep bidding spades on minimum values and 8 trump. Who will take the push? Opener holds 5 spades (5 card majors right?), and I don't see any reason with my 5224 that the cards are really wild around the table. Put pard on a likely 0454. This leaves 5422 opposite 3343 or maybe 5332 / 3433, or less likely 5512 opposite 3253. In any event, they don't have a huge 2nd fit, nor a lot of shortness. I think the field will face a similar problem, and I think passing 2♠ hoping for +200 or +500 looks right to me. Opp do not necessary have min. Pd may have min for his takeout dbl, coz he has good shape. On the other hand, Red vs white may push the opp, 3cx-1 is 100, 2s= is 110. I would say 80% time opps will take the push.

Doubelton SQJ and DQ make me feel pd didnt make a trap pass. If pd has D suit and a Major, he will try to overcall the major. But he didnt so I pass here. If I reopen, opps may find 44 S fit. Hongjun

Let's see what is going on here. Nobody bid 2s. It is likely LHO and PD each has five spades. This implies pd is less likely to have 4card hearts. So 3H is out. 3D is a possible choice, but what can u expect from pd except 3S or pass? If he pass, u would prefer defend 3C; if he bids 3S, u have to bid 3N anyway. So I am going to bid 3N. This is risky, but I am willing to take it.

How to handle this hand
flytoox replied to BurnKryten's topic in Intermediate and Advanced Bridge Discussion
1D, then reverse to 2H, and rebid 3H. Thi hand worth a reverse and should try to force to game. -
if LHO has more than 4 clubs, he is sqzed in c+h, if RHO has more than 4 clubs, then dbl sqz. Isnt it?
-
pass if wrong change pd or dont overcall 2d lightly next time.
-
draw trumps, duck one round c, then marked single or dbl sqz. or c 33.
