  1. hello this is just another request to adjust the substitution function. when i sign as a sub i land in those team matches and then the hosts remove me happens over an over and it is quite annoying. to this day only one td was polite enough to approach me after the game and apologize because the original player returned when i sub in a tournament that is much less likely to happen because they mostly accept from the genral ppol of players whereas in the team matches there are often playing freinds involved. thanks
  2. A fellow poster wanted to stop irritating partner, that must be something experts do, because i do not know how to do that after several years of play. But, further, i would like to stop being irritated by the following rebids, and figured if i knew what to expect i would be less irritated, so i ask. 1. assuming a 15-17 nt range played 2. assuming sa or 2 over 1 1 heart opening bid- pass- 1spade response- pass- 2NT What is the range for a 2nt opener`s rebid after a major opening bid? 1 minor opening bid- pass- 1nt response- pass- 3nt What is the range, or hand feature, for a 3nt opener`s rebid after responder has issued a limited response and now must play with the presumably better dummy exposed? thanks folks
  3. And the spades are exactly the point. when I read them textbooks ( i reside in palooka land), all the examples refer to spades. but the intermediates in the main room use that when they hold minor suits too, that is why i run when i see profiles stating the rule of 15 in an indy the other day i saw a partner open 1 diamond with 4-3-3-3 ans 8 hcp in 3rd seat. then he said he *had to open* because he was in third seat. i have no need for the rule of 15, i open major suits with 11 hcp with 5 trumps and even 10 hcp with six trumps or 9 hcp with seven trumps and a side ace. IN ANY SEAT, IN ANY VUL!!! now the minors i pass those 12-13 with bad texture, IN ANY SEAT!!!!
  4. there is a legion inside of us.
  5. How about a name that poster game. We could draw by lot the names of one or 2 posters to function as our surrogate poster for the duration of the game. We then identify all our posts that may be the product of the surrogate posters. (NTP Game) We can even mark such posts even if we ourselves wrote the post. We can then all guess. Perhaps one of the forum illustrious will offer to partner for a bbo tournament with the winner.
  6. i get booted when i cleck on the ads too
  7. i vote that this thread be removed on the account that it cannot be understood. this is more cryptic than that string theory stuff
  8. Because the only difference is one has a rating system and one does not? Hi Tim, what I was trying to say is that folks who like rating should opt to paly in online bridge places that offer rating. I was a member of such a club for a year, I did not like it because first, I was raided for my ratings upon arrival and then I had a hard time finding partners-- the better ones were protective of their ratings. Tho i took a partner there, he had the strange belief that in the long run the rating would self-correct, an i did not think so because the people who played us were in the same bracket. And even if that rating were to self correct, it would have to be that both partners come to the table ready to play veyr seriously which you might not want to do all the time in an online situation. While I was there, I met a man who was a highly-ranked player in the late 60s. He got there and played with evryone, his rating went down terribly. Towards the end, he would only play with me (who had only played for about 2 years at the time) and a norwegian expert player who was fully aware of this guys real playing ability (apparently he was the only one to realize that because others only looked at his rating). Anyway, he no longer plays online bridge, he became so despondent that he stopped playing online. I tried calling him at home a few times to bring him over to bbo-- he keeps saying he like rating and would not play non-rated games. So to people who want rating, I say, go and seek places where you can be rated according to a system of your liking. It matters not to me why bbo offers no rating, but i want it that way. If that were to change, I would just go and maybe take up scrabble.
  9. Is there a lack of sites where play is rated? AFAIK there is at least one rated site where one can play for free and two where there are annual fees. You can always log on to find a 3 digit figure of players in the rated tables. Why not play there? Obviously the majority does not wish a rating system and make bbo the largest and most successful playing site. Play in the main bridge club is not that hard: Once you discover the guy does not play stayman you can leave, no feelings hurt. Sometimes I chance to play with players who are more advanced than i am and they leave on me, however sometimes i gain from some smart thing they did. If they leave without calling me a moron i am even happier.
  10. Pinned!! I think thsi should be pinned with Fred`s recent comment concerning ratings.
  11. the minor sequences are great, i study them from here: http://www.bridgeworld.com/default.asp?d=e.../ksupdated.html the major seuqences, leave them as you already play, 1nt force etc... i have never had trouble with the sequences 1d-p-2clubs that is one easy one to play. but what is really fun is when you open 1 diamond and the opps bid 2hearts or 2 sapdes weak or overcall 1nt-- they are dead meat
  12. Maybe you can arrange to have an online bookseller list them for you at amazon and sell them on consignment. Some people here at the forum might buy some from you through some bbo dollars, if you publish some kind of list too.
  13. the David (after he started playing bridge online) http://xbartx.files.wordpress.com/2007/12/david.jpg
  14. i only play bridge online, so i am accustomed to instant results. used to have a partner for whom there was never a postmortem. he regularly performed vivisection, and eventually i stopped playing with him when he screamed at me for not leading his suit (i happened to be void) not only i had to read the opening lead, i had to read his comments : What? Why? the most annoying thing would be when he screamed at me after supporting my void in answer to what I thought was jacoby 2nt-- the bid that promised anywher from zero to 5 trumps, and from 8-18 points, if i only could guess what it was. to this day my stomach chruns any time i see 2nt bid or have to bid 2nt, seriously, be it lebensohl, to play, jacoby, ingberman etc... But what i find is this-- the instant results, especially following a bad board creates a cascade of bad results created a cascade of bad results because i would be simply too pissed off to concentrate. so now i never look at result till the end of the tourney, the results got better somehow i also ignore partners protests, especially when i do not open some 12 pointers
  15. Why should you judge, depends, I think, on what you are trying to do. Once I was floating in the tournament lobby of another bridge site. Perhaps it was my punk outfit, but no one was inviting. And there was a guy hanging there with a ridiculously high rating, who in fact holds a star at bbo. -- expert partner needed!!! --expert partner needed!!! no takers -- advanced partner needed!! -- advanced parner needed!! no takers the game starts and he shouts: ANYONE, ANYONE, I WILL PLAY WITH ANYONE so I asked, even me? He said, let`s go we already lost a round, just have common sense. Well we came 2nd, i am sure i made tons of mistakes but the key is this: The guy was not expecting me to go around playing squeezes or cuebidding 5th round control!!! He, I suppose, was just eager to play a few boards. But truly, if you guys are looking to find the world class, or even judge them, with the "take me to a table" button, you are looking for love in the wrong places.
  16. I bid 1 spades. I often remeber Max Hardy`s advice: opener rebids to describe. The description i want to give is, i am below 1nt range and the unbid suit is exposed. If the clubs were stopped, 1nt and that is matchpoint gold isnt it?
  17. the question behind this is a captaincy principle. First, there was no discussion it was a pickup partner. Second, this is no expert game, although there are the folks out there who would establish intricate details. True i could have had a little more to pass, but I passed 1nt and the guy in the last seat bid 2clubs. I could have acted over his 2 clubs if i had more, i could have doubled, bid a suit, etc. I passed agai- i am not interested. As far as i am concerned, whatever partner does, he is on his own under the circumstances-- ie playing a game with a random partner. After the zero, the partner logged off, i thought it was for the best.
  18. I held xxx, xxxx, xxxx, Kx Partner deals and opens 1nt, 15-17 1NT-P-PASS BYME-2CLUB PASS BY ME- PASS- DBL BY NO TRUMP BIDDER all passed i passed twice, i sure was not playing 2 something vulnerable on that crap I had. If that double is going to be anything, let it be penalty. That is why i lose at bridge. The partner of course, logged off but i find this kind of bidding selfish and insulting, in addition to being stupid.
  19. “After considerable research, I discovered that there were half a million bridge players in California, three of whom freely admitted they were not experts.” jim kauder, the bridge philosopher
  20. i play better than other think i play. but that is because, everyrone thinks i am an idiot. i ususally do not log off till i receive my daily dose of the epithet.
  21. Now you changed the question, pirate, initally there was no double, lho was passing. Pirate, you do not have to play garbage stayman, but it has advantages. If you have the garbage, protect right away-- it makes it difficult for rho to intervene If you have a little more(6-9), pass, if this goes 1nt-p-p-DBLE -- leave it in , u get a good score. Now, 1NT- DBLE - partners action is another question. The double itself is another question and your action depends on whethe DOUBLE is penalty or other conventional thing. after that double, your partnership has many more options-- systems on, systems off, redouble cuebid, etc... etc...
  22. I have more confidence in Mike Lawrence than in my ability to quote him correctly... This means that I agree that you should pass with a 4441, and that probably Mike Lawrence thinks the same. Perhaps he wrote something like: "Never pass 1NT with a club void, rarely pass with a singleton." I don't know! HEEELLLLLPPPPPP!!!!!! :( Rik He likely NEVER said NEVER. No one uses that word in bridge, but here is something on garbage or drop dead stayman, which I actually learned named as non-forcing stayman-- 9different from the convention the precision bidders named so) http://www.bridgehands.com/D/Drop_Dead_Garbage_Stayman.htm
  23. You are not going anywhere, your partner is trying to bid to protect, ie trying to add some ruffing power to a deal, even if it means playing at the 2 level with seven trumps. 1nt is very difficult if scottie cannot beam you up to dummy. the agreement for play there is in fact called "non-forcing stayman", which is an euphemism for "garbage stayman". as Trinidad said, many authors reason that way.
  24. [hv=d=s&v=b&n=s93hk542daq3ca543&w=saj842hqdjt86c962&e=sk76ht863d9752ct8&s=sqt5haj97dk4ckqj7]399|300|Scoring: MP 4♥ by South J♦ lead[/hv] Hope you can all see that 3NT fails quickly on a Spade lead when 4♥ is making an easy 11 tricks Many thanks to Ron Klinger for this hand Tony But tony, bridge deals are like the bible, if you search long enough you will fina a passage to justify your views. In billions of delas i am sure you can find a few thousand. Furthermore, bridge authors, even respectable ones, colour their writing with their ow experiences and you will see that none other then Terence Reese would disagree with Ron Klinger. Ron is a gret author btw, but especially in the contested auction.
