Hand dealt vs. computer generated
pigpenz replied to The_Badger's topic in General Bridge Discussion (not BBO-specific)
As I started to read this thread I was wondering the same question. Barry played minor suite finesses a different way which supposedly his ideas came from the fact of incomplete shuffling. also I thought I had always read that shuffling around 7 times takes care of incomplete shuffling. -
I always thought all players were responsible for dummy. so how can dummy revoke? I guess it was an old 1948 law http://www.acbl.org/clubs_page/club-administration/club-directors/rulings-faq/a-missing-card-in-dummy/

the bridge browser software is good but I don't think Stephen has gotten any new data since 2008. the only problem is that sometimes garbage in garbage out. You could get data for bbo acbl bbo general and the same for OK Bridge. I have written Stephen several times as the exe file tends to time out after awhile or needs to be update for different OS updates.....so the only place I currently have it is on an xp mode drive in windows 7. its a little pricey but does what it promises, I wish he had a data for say the blue ribbon pairs on national events.

I'll just delete the two folders and try to use deal master pro again all t he other folders worked fine, that I had made in the past

I can make *.lin files in dmPro for bidding problems then upload them to my hands directory, make directory for problem then upload *.lin file to the directory I just made. Sometimes it works and some times it doesn't work as far as letting me access the hands in the bidding room.... error message is uploaded hands rejected is there a limit to how many hands can be uploaded or is there some error in the lin format? When I have directed games in the mainroom it was no problem loading your own hands as the source. is there a limit in the my deals directory limiting you to #hands or size of directory any help

Hand dealt vs. computer generated
pigpenz replied to The_Badger's topic in General Bridge Discussion (not BBO-specific)
A lot of Barry Crane's rules for playing suits was based on old fashioned shuffling from what I have read -
I thought everyone was responsible for dummy? Say a singleton spade is in with the clubs, a spade is lead and declarer ruffs but no one notices that a spade is in with the clubs until the end of the hand.. whats the ruling? A clever dummy could be doing this on purpose not accidentally, how do you prove or rule?

I have seen one pair make a takeout double of 1♥ holding 4♠ and 6♥, and they play that they only show the other major and this is with a player holding more than 2500 points. I think a lot of this comes from newer players who are able to move up the masterpoint list by playing against weaker players without having to play against top level competition. Personally on the posted hand I would have overcalled 1♠

Yes N/S got off easy not losing deposit and getting 50% instead of 40%

even in Golf you get put on the clock after a warning or two. I don't think there is an appeal process in golf.

also couldn't North have bid 5NT showing all the Key Cards for for clubs, then south could show the K♦

Looks like it should be hooked up to a database of somekind, but def. looks like its for Regionals, Nationals, or Sectionals.....club games I don't know.

On the across the field issue, a couple of months ago there was charity or championship game with 16 tables, instead of having 2 8 table sections the game was run as one 16 table section. They have duplimates for the dealing of the hands. When I asked about the sections they said the board wont let them have 2 sections until they get to 17 tables. So they have a one section field where all the pairs play a whole bunch of boards that other pairs don't play.

Another "picking up bidding cards as a pass" issue
pigpenz replied to BudH's topic in Laws and Rulings
I had one the other day where in a Keycard auction with my partner, my partner signed off in 5♠ we had no agreement on bidding with a void so I was thinking when I looked at my RHO all off her bidding cards were in the box and I said I was waiting for you to bid....she told me I was full of it, I called her a B and off to a Zero Tolerance complaint we went. -
Law 93-3b 3. in adjudicating appeals the committee may exercise all powers assigned by these Laws to the director, except that the committee may not overrule the director on a point of law or regulations or on exercise of his Law 91 disciplinary powers. (the committee may recommend to the director that he change such a ruling.) It would seem that the penalty would follow under law 91 for the TD, in his efforts to maintain order of the game. Blackshoe: there seems to be an issue with this club in controlling the TD. Majority of board is novices, TD can't matchpoint across the field with 2 8 table section, until they reach 17 tables. So as far as TD goes, if they need the money then they put up with it.

I was District 20 recorder after H Sharpels....90-93....back then I was thinking of using Fred's Bridge Base for a database on the cases turned in...back then there was barely email and def no browsers. When I was replaced no one asked for forms or cared so down the shredder they went. Now days with all the tech we have there is no reason to not have an ACBL recorder site where forms can be turned in and maybe a database that can be assessed by District, National, and Unit recorders. At the club level I don't know, a lot of people who think they are good have terrible agreements or lack of them. Most people at the club level don't really care. I often ask people why this or that occurred and no one can ever remember the hands even with handrecords. All of this would be great but I don't know how much it would get used at lower levels of competition.

thanks for the ideas...having stayed away from acbl live games for 20 yrs.....the spin on what happens changes all the times. The person who emailed me and from the letter I felt that most of the players and committee felt like the TD was out of line. Previous questions I believe about what Directors should do about slow play had resulted in boards(clubs) not really taking a firm line on slow play....but then again local clubs tend to mostly get novices to serve on the board, not really sure but feel that may be some of the reason for taking away the penalty even though the club is not private.

Received an email today about a slow play penalty at the local club game. After searching on Bridge Winners all I could find is slow play penalties in championship events mostly by Brad Moss referring to KO's. Ruling at club: TD gave slow players a penalty they appealed and had it changed to no penalty. My Question is I always thought that a slow play penalty was a procedural penalty that is not appealable? just looking for guidance here thanks

So how much does it cost to host a website?
pigpenz replied to 1eyedjack's topic in The Water Cooler
the cost can be related to how much traffic you generate to your site. You can register a domain name and setup Windows if that is what you use to host a web page on a computer at your home, but if the traffic it generates is to great for the isp you use then you might have to pay for more bandwidth. 1.register a domain name cheap and setting up dns servers say with register.com is around $35 usa. 2.you can do your own web page for free and redirect dns server to your own computer if you choose for free 3.you can pay some to do it for you web authoring or hosting not free. you can have as much content on your website you want if its your own computer, if not you pay for the amount of content you think you will need. -
sorry for all the confusion, yes i am in usa and thought this was appeals and committe forums for all just not ebu! how this all happened was previous table we ran into preciscion pair and i asked if we play anything. partner said lets play mathe and transfers against their big club. so partner thought it was all forcing clubs and i assumed only big one club. there was no alerts at to 3 ♥ x as penalties or take out. if south had passed west would have to pass i assume. there was no understanding on the 3♥ call, mostly at the table what occurred was some table talk by north as to what is going on here

[hv=pc=n&s=sq3hakqj9632dq5ca&w=sakj62h5datcj9876&n=s874hdk8763ckqt54&e=st95ht874dj942c32&d=s&v=e&b=3&a=2c2hp(positive)3hd3spp4hp5dp6hppp]399|300[/hv] TD was called on opening lead that there may have been a failure to alert. One was playing transfers and other was not. TD ruled that there was damage and rolled contract back to 4♥ making instead of 6♥down two. On the surface it looks like south is trying for a two way shot by bidding 6♥. 4 souths opened 4 ♥ west overcalled 4♠ then south rebid 5♥ so there is grounds for players bidding to 5♥ would options by TD be 1. misbid by west -result stand 2. roll back to 5♥ down one 3. let result stand for n/s 6♥-2 e/w 5♥-1 or 4♥ making How would you rule and would you appeal TD's deciscion/ TIA
