Lord Molyb's table of converting takeout to penalties At each level, if you have X trump tricks, how many outside tricks you need to convert to penalties. If you have more outside tricks you should strongly consider bidding anyways. Can you resist?

Partner bid 3NT once I doubled, he had about 13 points :P -
[hv=pc=n&e=sajt9763h754dq7ck&d=w&v=b&b=4&a=p2h(Flannery)ppp]133|200[/hv] North's opening is standard flannery, showing 5 hearts and 4 spades, and 11-15 points. I might have bid 3 spades but I figured I'd play it doubled opposite a passed partner (RHO has 4 spades, right?) What is your lead?

Technically, the slam is not cold ;) What is exactly does the 4♠ bid mean?

Er, sorry, there's a slight error in the north hand. Was the jack of diamonds, not the seven.
-
[hv=pc=n&s=st95hkqjt64da6ct8&n=sk7ha3dkj42cakqj2]133|200[/hv] North is the dealer in matchpoints, at unfavorable vulnerability. This was bid to 3NT in a bridge class, making 7.

Double! Although it shows more of a 5-6 H and 2D hand.

Responding to partner's takeout double
Lord Molyb replied to paulg's topic in Interesting Bridge Hands
Yeah, I pretty much live in hypothetical land; it's driven my partner nuts before. :D But even on this sort of pin that we are trying to land on, I will still try to land in it. -

Well, obviously :P -

Because I can't think of a single layout that partner would overcall 2♠ that 4 spades is not at least close, unless he has serious diamond wastage. Partner is short in hearts and he probably has a club honor as well (although he might not) and you can make 4 spades on that layout if spades break normally. -

You can't lead against your own contract. -

Partner probably has something very similar to ♠AQJxx ♥x ♦Kxxx ♣Kxx but we can hope for more. So I'll change my mind to 4♠. -

3♠, might be taking the low road there though... -

1NT should depend on how strong your overcalls are.

reverse bids obsolete

Reversing is fun though! <_< -
Would you say the same thing if my hand was [hv=pc=n&s=shkqjt987654dc632]133|100[/hv] just out of curiousity?

Responding to partner's takeout double
Lord Molyb replied to paulg's topic in Interesting Bridge Hands
Partner's pegged for a 4-5 loser hand with 4-4-4-1 or 5-4-4-0 distribution, or something EXTREMELY similar. Partner could have, for example: ♠AQJx ♥AQxx ♦AJ10x ♣x ♠AKxx ♥AQJx ♦AQJx ♣x ♠KQJxx ♥AQJx ♦Axx ♣x ♠AKQxx ♥AJxx ♦Qxxx ♣ - Or a variety of other similar hands, where being in 5♥ is vastly preferable to defending clubs, even though 5♣ is going down. Partner is not likely to have, for example: ♠Axxx ♥AQxx ♦Axxx ♣x as that is too weak to be making a 5-level takeout. (S)he will also not have ♠Axxx ♥QJxx ♦AQx ♣Kx because that is too flat to be making a takeout double at this level. I will admit that it's highly unlikely 5♣ will make. I suppose it is possible that partner has the goldilocks ♠AQJxx ♥AJxx ♦QJxx ♣- which is practically the only hand that will make a takeout double that neither 5♣ or 5♥ makes, but it's not something I'm counting on. And even though there's probably 15 holes in my logic, I don't think I'm foolish for bidding 5♥. Now, if they were vulnerable... I might be a little less convinced. -
I was south. [hv=pc=n&s=s95hakqj87652d9c4&n=skq72h3daq8764ct2&d=s&v=b&b=7&a=6h(Strong%20rebiddable%20hearts%2C%2033+%20points)p6n(3-7%20HCP)p]266|200[/hv] Why do I have to have 33 points to pre-empt in hearts?

robot playing high for no reason on defense
Lord Molyb replied to steve2005's topic in GIB Robot Discussion
They once refused to take their natural trump trick against me with Jxx opposite Q10. (Jxx played jack on first round of trumps for no reason). Generally it doesn't matter though.
