How to escape for Gib after penalty double?
steve2005 replied to lycier's topic in GIB Robot Discussion
Having a penalty redouble available wouldn't have made a difference as then the field would have it available and presumably people would redouble too. LYCIER scored 1 trick less than most. easy to do, but with the cards marked from double possible to do better. I don't understand why some robots are south?! Robot souths did play kinda double dummy. -
How to escape for Gib after penalty double?
steve2005 replied to lycier's topic in GIB Robot Discussion
Why be greedy? North has already given up on game. Pass will yield a top (or nice imp+) no need for a redouble for penalty. Better to save redouble for weak hands with no clear place to play. Believe me I play weak NT and this sequence comes up far more often with them. -
Cuebids may be rare but when they come up 8-13 imps or more are often on the line. Sure blasting often works. However, the bids used for cuebidding usually have no natural meaning so is a free add to system if you can do them right.

If responder has 4♥ 3-4♠ I can't see wanting to play in 2♥. Would want to make a game try even opposite a subminimum. If responder doesn't have 4♥ will be bidding 2♠.

points smoints 6♥, 3 small ♠ so partner short with no wasted values and 3 high honors this is plenty

15 HCP opposite opener not enough for game?
steve2005 replied to helene_t's topic in GIB Robot Discussion
12-14 14- no big deal. GIB has 15 HCP and a club fit should keep trying. 3N likely on power just need Qx or 4-4 split, but should at least try 3♦ and if no 3N comes out take a shot at 5♣ -
Pd opens 4S vul. Go slamming?
steve2005 replied to diana_eva's topic in Intermediate and Advanced Bridge Discussion
what I don't get is how is the field going 4♠-6♠ or some such. my partners don't have 10 tricks when they open 4♠ -
I would have 2♥ as 4+♥ F1. Anything from a submin to below a jumpshift.
-
So many pick up partners don't understand cuebidding, never mind the couple that will pass u in the cuebid even though partnership has shown 10 ♠. How are you supposed to have serious slam tries? But seriously New Minor Forcing/Fourth suit forcing is the most useful conventions after the standard conventions. Lebensohl for the lucky few.

steve2005 replied to diana_eva's topic in Intermediate and Advanced Bridge Discussion
Solid spades without some convention to show such a hand I open 1♠ in 1st and 2nd. add A♥ and even thinking 2♣. I don't see how you can bid 6 off 2♥ and maybe A♠. Bidding 6♠ with a void and I say you psychically knew p has solid ♠ -
4N is listed as 17+ pts. Gib has 14 hcp and singleton with wasted Q♦ has no business bidding Blackwood opposite a known min. If opener has Aces Gib is looking for they don't bid 4♠.

Leaving a takeout double in with no trump tricks and a possible 9-card fit is losing bridge. Is Gib not you who screwed up. you shouldn't overcall a 4-card minor even at 1-level never mind 2-level, no upside.

Yet Another Pre-Empt From Opps
steve2005 replied to eagles123's topic in Intermediate and Advanced Bridge Discussion
Even solid citizens who only open on 6♥ partner can raise on 2♥ so 9-card ♥ fit not a guarantee. But I still bid 4♠. -
Yet Another Pre-Empt From Opps
steve2005 replied to eagles123's topic in Intermediate and Advanced Bridge Discussion
Yes this gives you 2 ways to win. Opps may have been stretching themselves on distribution and may find it hard to double you even if you are going for a number -
Feeling competitive?
steve2005 replied to Jinksy's topic in Intermediate and Advanced Bridge Discussion
If your NV I bet most people would bid 3♦. Partner probably has a weak NT without 5♣, 4♦ and 4♥ or they may have found a bid. You have 2♠ so you have a good chance to have a fit presumably in ♦. If you just meekly pass you can chalk up 2♠ and you probably lose a part score battle. You also may luck out and push opp to 3-level possibly down. -
With third hand reasonable to take a shot at 3N. Even if playing some sort of invite and opener goes on Kx♣ you still have finesse If feeling conservative pass 1N especially at MP, 1N will score better than 3♣ usually
-
Yes, i'd rather have kind opponents who lead our suit in NT instead of their long suit, rather than having all my finesses work, lol.

Opps Pre-Empt and P Doubles
steve2005 replied to eagles123's topic in Intermediate and Advanced Bridge Discussion
No shame in missing a slam. That's why people pre-empt so often, it's hard to have constructive bidding over it. Diagram so small, I wont try to comment on actual hand -
I assume you mean 11-13 balanced for opening 1♦. Depending on your style of Precision 1♥ could be very light if you run with short ♦. So bidding 1♠ caters to finding cheapest playable fit even if a 4-3. If p bid 1N you can still rebid a 6-card ♦. NEVER MIND WRONG VERSION OF PRECISION

Oppo doubles the response to blackwood
steve2005 replied to Cthulhu D's topic in Intermediate and Advanced Bridge Discussion
This is a little different situation. I don't think meta agreements apply. p has jump rebid in ♥. Don't need much to play in ♥ -
problems after balancing takeout dbl
steve2005 replied to Stephen Tu's topic in GIB Robot Discussion
West should double 2♠ show 4♥ at lower level -
Good slam but I think in practise Gib will take 2 losing finesses. Am I wrong?

GIB Release Notes - updated with each new version
steve2005 replied to Bbradley62's topic in GIB Robot Discussion
This will spoil a lot of humour! lol -
4♠ is 11-12. 3♠ is mere preference. Gib is bidding right but the descriptions are wrong should be easy fix of the descriptions
