Question about Cappelletti
steve2005 replied to wclucas42's topic in Intermediate and Advanced Bridge Discussion
ACBL board of directors may allow this in future. however, this meaning is currently allowed in balancing seat as the prohibition only applies to direct overcalls. So you could use in balance but its not advisable as would be so easy to have an oops and forget. -
Return to partner's major
steve2005 replied to VixTD's topic in Intermediate and Advanced Bridge Discussion
Their not playing anything fancy like Bergen so 3♠ is limit. I cant believe they have no forcing ♠ raise. In Acol some sort of 4♣/4♦ Swiss raise is common and is not very useful as natural bid. in North America most play 2N and splinters as a raise. Many also use 3N as some sort of raise. -
Return to partner's major
steve2005 replied to VixTD's topic in Intermediate and Advanced Bridge Discussion
This is a limit raise, no need to temporize and muddle your sure ♠ fit -
Opponents were playing systems on over 2♣ and fortunately partner didn't try to find out my major. So opp had a clean auction to a normal contract and play normal, so no damage was done. There was just puzzlement at why I didn't have a major
-
True but tfor hese purposes assume misclick since that's what director was telling me what I should have done based on. your welcome to say director should have told to do such and such if was misbid. not sure what I was thinking at time, was speedball might have thought it was major suit opening suit opening and was trying to make 2♦ overcall and hit 2♣ then realised opening was 1N so gave alert. all very confusing a) speedball , b) I was using windows program which im not used to
-
my flash wasn't working so had to use windows version so of course I misclicked a bid auction was 1N by opp 2♣ by me , distracted so thought Cap, but with this partner I play as unspecified major 1 suiter. I realised mistake immediately and alerted as maj 1-suiter director called I informed him I misclicked. more correct would be I misbid. director said I should have informed opponents I misclicked is that right? I didn't think their entitled to that info just meaning of bid made

General software/BBO suggestions
steve2005 replied to knave1's topic in Suggestions for the Software
yes the 18 board games are poorly attended, a pity. I think its because the speedball fits into less than an hour so is convinient -
Natural is one thing but no Stayman makes sub 10 pt. 1N unplayable imho. No artificial escapes from X too.
-
Ruben advances are GCC legal. Funny you can use transfers over overcalls but not after openings.
-
isn't that essentially what I said? no conventions allowed if use lighter!
-
2N by Gib N seems odds. No ♣ stopper. Why not 2♥ to show 4♥. Sure maybe p will think 5♠ but only 1 card off and p may have 4♥.
-
10 pts is the minimum allowed 1N range in ACBLland. Yes two doubletons allowed too. The penalty if your methods are to open lighter is your allowed no conventions; no Stayman, no transfers, No Gerber, No Blackwood. So seems unlikely you would want to go with no conventions, so would keep strength as 10+hcp. Which is too bad because a 9-11 range would be your average hand and opens up other system possibilities.

A impossible explanation with logical error
steve2005 replied to lycier's topic in GIB Robot Discussion
Your lucky North Gib didn't go, "oh partner has 10+ hcp we must have game" and bids 4♥!? -
Drury / Reverse Drury
steve2005 replied to 32519's topic in General Bridge Discussion (not BBO-specific)
Some people prefer to get by with Bergen and use natural 2/1 by P/H. The players around here (not bbo) are very opinionated about it. -
I only ask this because nobody else has NS are playing 2/1 so isn't 2♥ an overbid right off the bat before h,is later misbids
-
The annoying thing is 4♠ is described as 20-21 hcp with strong rebiddable ♠. Doesn't that sound like a strong 2♣ opening?! Which iandayne didn't make so doesn't have that hand. Why cant you sacrifice without Gib thinking you have a monster?! But it still doesn't explain why Gib with 2♠ opposite strong rebiddable suit wants to take a stab in the dark with 5♦.
-
3♠ is always 4 in standard bidding (but have seen 3 card raise) so at least you have 4-3. but after 2♠ you could be in 3-3. Course 1♠ in standard is 4+ lol. Agree with everyone, this hand isn't special, no need to make non-system bid.

Strong NT is vulnerable to penalty doubles just as Weak NT is. The big problem is when p is weak, you never get to board to take finesses. And since most parnerships haven't discussed escapes they cant scramble efficiently. You have a few of issues to decide before designing a system. 1) Are you going to play systems on over a penalty double. If you do this means you only have Pass and Redouble to assign extra meaning. Or are you going to use different bids over a penalty double. 2) Are you going to try to play in 1NXX when you think 1N making. 3) Is 1NX a possible place to play. Once you've decided this you can probably pick your methods from established weak NT methods.

I used to play 4-card majors and was happy with it but have come around to 5-card majors always. Playing 4-card majors responder can give you some leeway, but playing mostly 5-card you end up in bad spots opening a 4-card suit because partner will be assuming 5.

gib needs work in responding to takeout doubles
steve2005 replied to goffster's topic in GIB Robot Discussion
Your double is correct. Bidding 3♠ should show some sort of monster 6-5 hand. Though I expect Gib probably has it as 5-4 with 23 pts which should still be a nice double in imho. -
interesting Gib's jump new suit after double
steve2005 replied to lycier's topic in GIB Robot Discussion
I don't understand, surely as a passed hand doubler will be 4-4 in majors Maybe 4-3 but at least promises 3-3 in majors and that would be rare as a passed hand. With 5 or 6 cards in opener's minor surely you pass as you wern't good enough to open, no point in coming into auction when opponent has your best suit sure could be 3-card suit but odds are against it. -
The way I was taught to bid over strong jump shifts is make your normal bid (as if responder hadn't jumped) just one level higher. If you would jump then jump. So this is a clear 2N rebid. 3N would show 17-19 not a range so wide it is useless 11-17. 3N with that wide meaning is a slam killer. So my old school of bidding would have went: 1♦-2♥-2N-3♦ (agreeing ♦ with lots of room for cuebidding to find 6♦)

How to bid this kind of hand using GIB's system?
steve2005 replied to AyunuS's topic in GIB Robot Discussion
Isn't 5♠ a cuebid looking for 7 and guaranteeing 1st round control of all suits by our side?! Gib gives this bid as showing 23+ total points. Off an an Ace and Q♥ shouldn't you place final contract after 5♥, 5♥/6♥/6N ? -
I criticize east's 2♣. It has no tolerance for ♠, it should merely jump in ♥ which from east's standpoint is most likely game. To cuebid and then bid 5♥ should show a big hand, to be honest I don't think can even have the distribution for this bid to exist by a passed hand.
