This is no different then if you weren't playing asking bid but were cuebidding and cuebid a suit you don't have to lead inhibit. maybe not sound bridge but perfectly legal.

2/1 game force raises
steve2005 replied to Sadie3's topic in General Bridge Discussion (not BBO-specific)
throw in my 2 cents since didn't see it mentioned. saw in Acol book and like cause a bid of 3N is so high should be a picture bid. 3N is 4M333 with 4 of opener's major and like 12-15 or 13-15 hcp, as you prefer. so usually opener will bid 4M, but can pass 3N or make slam try. -
Conceal 4 card support in favour of twice rebidding Qxxxxx
steve2005 replied to 1eyedjack's topic in GIB Robot Discussion
thinks Qxxxxx is twice rebiddable. he has a minimum hand 4♠ stands out as a nice signoff bid, no mucking about -
doesn't even have a 5♣ bid lol. can we play money games with robots please

I had a recent experience facing a precision pair using a FD card where auction went 1st seat 1M P 4M by opp and our side was vul don't remember opp vul the 4M bid was described as "purely preemptive bid" im very close to bidding 5♣ on the hand, but didn't trust the explanation as I know most Precision players use 4M on fairly strong hands. However Im very close with slightly different cards/vulnerability might bid 5♣ and go for a big number dummy came down with 4 small trump, a suit headed by AQ, a suit headed by A and a small singleton. This is hardly a purely preemptive hand. He can practically defeat 5♣ by himself. I called the director, who said would check if damage at end. well there was nothing to the play (always makes 4) so no damage. but the director said he couldn't do anything about any possible misexplanation as couldn't even see the explanation. if I make a misexplanation of one of my bids the director can point out my error and tell me to correct the convention card or straighten out what bids means. with a FD card you seem to be able to put anything

I voted equal blame. for obvious reasons with the heart hand. but responder crazy if thinks making profit with 3♣X. and bidding 4♥ later. but listening to discussion there is much to these sort of sequences which needs to be discussed. this should be discussed rather than trying to assign blame!

in the BBO News it says GIB has new ways to show both majors over 2♣ & 2N opening. Does anyone know what these ways are?

I cant see any use for a 5-4 pre-empt without a multi and would vote against this half measure (if I had a vote) is anyone out there willing to give up 6-card pre-empts?
-
GCC already allows 5-4 with 10+ if known suits. the most common of which would be Flannery "OPENING BID AT THE TWO LEVEL OR HIGHER indicating two known suits, a minimum of 10 HCP and at least 5–4 distribution in the suits" is it that much of stretch to have only one suit known?

1♥-1N(forcing)-2 of minor-3♠ does this sequence have any meaning in 2/1? any difference if just playing standard with 1N non-forcing?
-
Haven't been able to find on internet method to handle a DONT 2♥ overcall of 1N showing at least 5-4 in majors. need choices. if this was Cap would play double to show at least one 4-card major and some interest in penalties and Lebensohl otherwise. or Larry Cohen method 2♥ = GF in ♣ 2♠ = GF in ♦ 2NT = Lebensohl -- where rebidding 3M shows a stopper 3m = Invitational 3M = GF, Shortness (0 or 1) 3NT = game, Neither MAJOR stopped However, in DONT doubling 2♥ for penalty would have to show 4♥. What to do with 4♠ especially if balanced

best variant for simple strong pass system
steve2005 replied to whereagles's topic in Non-Natural System Discussion
I think your right pass=0-8 etc as he later talks of possible 1♣ as 9-11 bal -
probably not the best forum for this suggestion but here goes. 1♣-1N showing 11-12 hcp balanced without a 4 card major non-forcing 1♣-1♦ either ♦ or balanced hand 6+ hcp no 4M trouble with responding 1N on 6-9 or 6-10 is you play hand from wrong side and with a minimum opposite a min you often have no play
-
There is a big difference between opening 1N with a 5-card major which is acceptable (though many don't) and opening 1♣ on a 5 card major. [edit] with 1♣ your more likely to face interference than 1N, so opening 1M rather than 1♣ puts you in better position to handle interference [/edit] with more points from a 1N opening will have better chance at making 1N

The Italians open 1M with 5M332 no problem. so enlighten me you have min hand 13 hcp 5♠3♥2♦3♣ you open 1♣ partner responds 1♠ you rebid 1N with a balanced min. now responder with balanced 5-6 hcp and 3♠ must surely pass and you miss 5-3 fit. maybe you rebid 2♠ this looks awkward (probably not right), seems like your starting auction one-level higher. Now responder with weak hand and 0-1♠ will look to try to play in a minor at 3-level. If you open 1♠ and use a forcing 1N you can try to find a spot at 2-level. maybe there is a scheme that will work, but there are lots of schemes to handle 5M332 hands after 1M opening like Gazzilla.

Basically follow this hierarchy for opening. The two exceptions being: -(41)35 hands are opened 1♣ and you must rebid 2♣ on a 5 card suit if responder bids 1♠. However, 1♦ has at least 4 cards -with reversing values and a 5 card major/♦ and a lower ranking 6+ card suit will open the 6 card suit. Also open 1♣ if unbalanced with 5♣4♦ and reversing values. For responses to 1♣ use 1♠ as a catchall denying a 4-card major, weak ♣ raises, weak and INV 6 card ♦. 1N if 5-4 in the majors with 5-9 hcp. 1N rebid after a 1♦/1♥ response to 1♣ is 17-19 hcp balanced (denies 4 card support), will complete transfer with 3-4 card support and minimum strength, while 2N is the Bridge World hand of death As to the original questions, opening 1♣ on balanced hand with a 5 card major doesn't work, opening with 5♦ is fine yes you will lose ♦ fit often but playing in NT ok. Don't think using 1♣ to handle 2N opening types is wise, too many changes to system would be required. If you really want to use 2N for something else, could use Kokish relays with your 2♣ openings and squeeze extra ranges of NT in there. Other option for 2N openings, add a strong option to a Multi 2♦ if your playing that.

balancing bid vs weak 2
steve2005 replied to jmcw's topic in General Bridge Discussion (not BBO-specific)
im passing. were 14 pts but 3-3-3-4. partner couldn't bid so unless he has a balanced 12 I don't like our prospects and could go for a number -
gib cc notes give 3♥-3♠-4♥ as choice of game 5-5 and 3♦-3♥-3♠ as 5-5 slam try
-
Over 3♣ I think you have to punt unless you play something similar to Lebensohl over reverses Does partner have a balanced crap hand? or maybe a nice 8 or 9 pts? Lebensohl helps with this problem I bid 3♦ and hope if partner has real crap we can stop in 4♣
-
AJTxx is a highly underrated holding if partner has a honor you have 0-1 losers with no honors but xxx there is a 75% chance of just 1 loser
-
partner likely has 0 hcp. sure maybe he has a Q if opp opened light. so unless partner can ruff something 5♣ is down. so why not just bid what you can make 3♣? you have defense so opp likely arn't making game
