Why is defense so hard? One critical and understated factor is alertness for opportunities to act. And it can't be properly done in problems. For instance you will probably find the solution to this problem fairly easy but inattention at the table will result in a missed opportunity. Here you are alert that a problem exists but at the table a run of the mill set of hands may put you to sleep when it comes up. The auction is as follows All red in a MP event. The opponents are playing precision West North East South P--- P---- 1C*- P 1D*- P---- 2C-- P 2S-- P---- 4S-- all pass Partner leads the ♥K. As South plan the defense. Well IIRC Cayne uses 2NT as a feature ask and over 3♣ I would just bid 5♦ over 3♦ I would just pass over 3♥ I would try 5♦. 3♠ is ugly as 4♦ may be considered forcing.
yes probably the best choice with 3♣ being second. The problem with 2♠ is that IMO it is GF as partner cannot have ♠ [well 4 anyway] and should be reserved for a slam precursor as well.
In fairness, Justin came close to an explanation. The "terrible" comment suggests that 6♣ would be a partnership-specific treatment, showing first-round control of clubs, two other cards, and a complete admission of being an idiot in the prior auction. If that would be so understood, from past experience, then the call is perfect. Others hinted at that implicit agreement, as well.
I assume you pass then as N holding [hv=s=skqjxxxhxxdkqjxcx]133|100|[/hv] And you, I assume, never miss a slam or overbid to a slam after opponents preempt to the 4-level? If I didn't do that I wouldn't be bidding enough :P But the 7 level deserves extra care and a 60% chance that partner has the ♣A is a marginal grand.
I am inclined to pass as we might have a good ♥ fit but have no problem with those using X to tell partner this is our probable best spot hehe the bidding is so improbably your mind filtered it for you pooltuna - that *was* the 3c bid. Phil Yes K did not add any extra information[or even a "all pass" or 3 passes at the end] so I looked for a problem
Nothing rates to work but I would have tried the J♠ because I expect my entries to limited as well and the opponents made no efforts to find a major suit fit.
