  1. not answering feels like a violation of the captaincy principle as applied to 1NT
  2. But you are playing them on this hand. If I'm playing a 2♦ opening as natural then I don't open 2♦ on a weak hand with spades because I think anything but multi is theoretically unsound. Nor do I see why you are making a constructive raise on a hand that isn't a constructive raise just because you don't like constructive raises. hopefully he recognizes good constructive advice
  3. I presume the ♦ spots were such that you could not confidently duck the first round into RHO's hand? Clearly he has to hold the ♦A or you would already be down. That would be a good idea at IMPs, but it does say that this was board-a-match. They're likely to be in 3NT at the other table, on the same auction, and there's a good chance of 10 tricks by getting one of the red-suits going. Also, it might be rather embarrassing if RHO has done something clever with J10xx xxx A10x AKx yep forgot conditions of contest and when I do that I drop into IMP mentality :)

  5. unless I have managed to create the impression in RHO that I might have underled the ♥A I also lead the ♦K
  6. my choice as well. It is more passive i.e. less likely to cost a trick than any of the other leads. Partner rates to have at most a K or maybe 2Q leading a ♥ probably finds the ♥Q for declarer.♦ A probably eliminates a guess for the ♦Q or is more likely to eliminate a promotion of the ♦J. The ♠ could do the same for the J but holding fewer cards in ♠ makes it lower odds.
  7. you need to choose between 6♦ and 5♦. I would choose to 5 to make it hard for them to get to 6
  8. 3♣ was asking for a ♣stopper and 3♠ was an offer to play a 4-3 fit
  9. WHAT!!! From what I have seen on these fora all doubles are either TO or protection!! Are you even allowed to use the word "penalty" and "double" in the same sentence? :)
  10. Did you pay 2000? I did, now I'm careful when overcalling at the 2 level with bad hands/bad suits. There are 3 related issues to having both a bad suit and a suit headed by just the ace: - The opponents are more likely to catch you when you are in trouble, because instead of trumps like A9xx or AKxx they have more attractive holdings to pass like KQTx. - The opponents are less likely to be making something when you do go for a number. - You go for quite a lot of smallish 200 and 300 numbers even when they don't double you, and in those cases the opponents invariably don't have game. I have paid 1100 for overcalling 2♣ red vs white and I am a lot more careful at those colors now :)
  11. It is a first step. After you will submit your proposal with all requested details you will receive the reply that submitions with size more than 1 page will not be approved. Back to step 1. Been there. did you try a 4 point font :) :)
  12. OK np then. I ain't big fan of rebidding values either. That being said there are always exceptions. Do we expect partner to know we are in a possible double game swing situation? And for a 1♠ call in this auction I expect partner to "have the nuts". A hand like the one below is possible IMO [hv=s=saqjxxxhxxdkxxcax]133|100|[/hv]
  13. I presume then that as a consequence 2/1ers cannot be weak NTers too?
  14. if you don't have an agreement it is natural
  15. system at fault since it doesn't allow you to open 1NT with a 5 card major. This assumes of course that this is within your 1NT range. Not being a big, weak NT fan I am curious how the weak NTers handle this type of hand? Do they just suck it up and pass partner's 1NT call(assumes not forcing) or do they go out on a limb with 2NT. Assuming a forcing 1NT what do they do over partner's 2♠ preference?
  16. 1NT is the next worst bid ever? :D for me the ♥ suit is unbiddable I would have bid 1NT over 1♦ and 3♦ over an expected 2♦ continuation.
  17. I wouldn't blame you for passing. Generally when I raise in this situation I try to show a very good minimal opener.
  18. 4♠ over 5♥ I will probably bid 5♠ (if partner doesn't beat me to it) since I won't know if I am bidding to make or save I won't know if you are bidding to lose a partner or because you enjoy hearing the sound of your own voice repeat itself on a normal hand. But I guess the important point is either way neither one of us knows why you would push to 5♠. Hmmm I guess this is a demostration of "I can dish it out, but I can't take it" :D
  19. best response I have seen on this topic so far
  20. Like Phil I would have opened. A game bid is fine but 4♥ might put you in a 4-3 fit if partner finds a reason to need to raise with 3 so I would bid 3NT and leave partner to correct if he actually held 4.
