xx1943 replied to blover's topic in Intermediate and Advanced Bridge Discussion
Hi IMPs red agaisnt white u have to bid 5♠ no matter if 5♦ is forcing or not. partners 3♠ is no barrage in this situation. cheers al -
What do u respond to 1NT with this hand
xx1943 replied to badderzboy's topic in Intermediate and Advanced Bridge Discussion
Hi Steve, 1) Stayman for sure 2) 4NT quantitative imo cheers Al -
Hi Kenneth the convention is called XYZ. If you type in GOOGLE Bridge abd XYZ you'll get a lot of links. i.e. XYZ The convention is similar to "twoway-forcing-minor" cheers Al

Hi all, since a few days I have no access to my hands. I click on the day with the played hands and get the following error-anouncement: DBD::mysql::st execute failed: Can't open file: 'archived_hands.MYI'. (errno: 144) at history.pl line 164. It this problem general or one of my browser. Think it ocurred first after last software update. regards Many thx Al

I always play inverted minors since 40 years. There are many similar hands. You need a forcing minor-suit raise. I pd wants to play goren ok. 1♦ - 3♦ is forcing, I'll go with this. But never play a system without a poss. for a forcing minor-raise. regards Al

What is the correct thing to do?
xx1943 replied to doofik's topic in General Bridge Discussion (not BBO-specific)
Hi Jola, hi Ben. You are 100% rite. TD (like everyone) should do, what they announce. But please don't be dogmatic. I host **Very Quick and Nice** 4*3 boards 6min/per board. Last round more time if necessary. I never change the starting time. But in very rare situations I have to add time for a specific round. But my tourney never lasted more than 75 minutes. There is videlicet a little problem. I announce too, that I'll adjust all not finished boards. I host only 20 tables per one TD. Sometimes there are 3 difficult boards or many disconnections due to server problems and more than half of the tables are not finished. In this case I must add time. I would like to add 1 minute for the ROUND. But there is another problem, which is discussed here many times. I want to add 1 minute per round not per board. But this is not possible in the actual software interface. Perhaps this change will be possible in the next version. Regards Al -
Adjustment of a board that was not played
xx1943 replied to mink's topic in BBO Tournament Directors Forum
Hi all This problem can only be solved if the software provides the TD with the information how much time every pair needed (just like a chess-clock). Anything else will go to never ending discussions who is responsible for the dealay. Btw. I call the TD at once if opp is red and his pd does not sub himself. Al -
Hi Gweny I tried this type of team-match (it is possible without any change of the existing software) and all players liked it much. The only disadavantage is that you have no barometer-scoring. What I enjoy in team-matches very much is to look how a specific board is played at the other table. Al

Hi jt, Hi Jan You got it to the heart. Those who don't like this approach, should host their own tourneys with their friends und rule-experts. :) :Perhaps with one TD for every table and 15 minutes per board to discuss every footnote of rule XY? Cheers Al
-
rite !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :P And all who do not agree  with this policy are invited to direct tournaments themselves with the rules they like. Anybody who is complaining about TDs should have the experience how to cope with perverse and rude players (Only 1,389% as McBruce calculated  ). But these few people may spoil up the whole tourney for all other nice people, who like to play bridge with fun. Cheers Al
-
Hi Edmund There are many people who like McBruce's event just in the manner he designed it. There are many European player, who get up at 04:15 am to participate in the Alphabet-Points-Tournament. Nobody forces you to play in this event or another which rules you dislike. Sincerly Al
-
Hi Bruce Right you are. I made similar experiences in ** Very Quick and Nice ** Behaviour improved drastic, when I began to blacklist just a few complainers. :P  Al :P

Intentional logouts during tournaments
xx1943 replied to guggie's topic in BBO Tournaments Discussion
Hi Paul, I repeat: There are unequivocal evidences for intentional leaving  available: 1) Partner and/or oppenents tell TD that the leaver announced that he will go now. 2) Both players of one pair are red at the same time, esp. after a bad board. That is never a fortuity (accident). Cheers Al -
Hi Deanrover, I think the feedback is a great idea. But I believe it is not fair to announce the statistics in public. Give the votes to every TD personally and to UDAY and Fred and perhaps to the yellows. What would you say if TDs would publish their blacklists about players for everone to see? There would be a great yelling. It would be just the same to publish TDs ratings. That is ecactly the point. Feedback to TDs would be very helpfull particularly if accompanied by specific complaints. This is exactly what Malucy provides with his InternetBridgeDomain: IBD The site has a breakdown at the the moment, but will be available at the coming weekend. Sincerly Al

Intentional logouts during tournaments
xx1943 replied to guggie's topic in BBO Tournaments Discussion
Hi all I think we should not bother yellows with these problem. TDs can do this job alone: I log all information I can get for my own about people, who leave my tournaments. 1) Often it is clearcut, that someone left intentionally. E.g. if suddenly two players (whole pair) are red or partner and/or opponents tell me, that someone went after a bad board. These are banned from ** Very Quick and Nice ** at once, according to the announcement in my rules. :D 2) Players, who leave (bad connection or ...........) were notified and banned after x-times. It would be a great help for TDs to get acess to this records. As a question to Ben or UDAY how is this possible? Al -
If the touney description tells me to read the rules, I always read the rules. Once I saw in the rules 'Cross-IMPS' and the tournament description said Matchpoints I let the TD know and the tourney description was quickly fixed to CrossImps. Too bad - I had already registered with one of my favorite matchpoint partners  Hi Paul you are one of the rare exception reading rules. About TD's mistake´: NOBODY IS PERFECT. :P Cheers Al

[hv=d=e&v=n&s=st832hak9dkj64ca5]133|100|Scoring: MP This is #9 of 2004/08/02 Fun&Fishy turned by 90 degree[/hv] Before I had counted my points, RHO opened 5♣ white against red. I think double from me is the normal action. This was followed by three passes. Hoping for 300, 500, 800 I led A of hearts an saw this dummy: [hv=d=e&v=n&n=saq97hjt87642d82c&w=st832hak9dkj64ca5]266|200|Scoring: MP[/hv] Partner contributed Heart 5 (standard carding) and declarer Heart Q. Now what? What is your second lead an why? I'm looking forward to hear your opions. If you are interested what happened, look here: Fun&Fishy 2004/8/2 board #9 Cheers Al

This is exactly the definition in Kaplan-Sheinwold. Except 1NT shows 6-9 HCP withou a four-card-major. Opener bids always 2♦ or 2♣ if he has 12-14 HCP, because in that case he must have 5 in his minor or in rare cases 1444 or 4144. Opener cannot have a balanced hand with 12-14 playing weak NT. Is I said earlier inverted minors are at most suited with weak NT. Al

Hi all The best book I know about fundamentals of defense and declarer-play is: "PAS A PAS" by Robert Berthe and Norbert Lebely There is a German translation "SCHRITT FÜR SCHRITT" volume 1-4 1) Declarer play in NT-contract 2) Declarer play in suit-contract 3) Defense against NT-contract 4) Defense against suit-contract Does anyone know a English translation of these great books, which I recommend to everyone from beginner to advanced? I'm looking forward to your replies. Al

Directors who host their club tourneys
xx1943 replied to willow23's topic in BBO Tournament Directors Forum
 That is my normal setting. B) I only change it when looking for an team game to play. Al -
Another funny story: Today in VQAN when I made the usual announcements before tournament starts: xx1943->Lobby: !H!H ** Very Quick and Nice ** for VERY FAST PLAYERS only starts soon !H!H xx1943->Tournament: !D!D Be sure you have read the RULES of this tournament. !D!D xx1943->Tournament: !S!D!S Register only, if your connection is 100% ok. !S!D! Two minutes to go til start; 60 pairs registered; suddenly a player said: player (Lobby): Hi, quick point. "Very Quick and Nice" says "Read the RULES before register!!!!!" but there are no rules -- click on ... player (Lobby): "Tournament Rules" and you get a blank page. ->player: ty :=) player (Lobby): Thanks, wow, you fixed that quickly! Very nice; I forgot  to upload my nice rules and nobody but one noticed. :P To post tournament rules seems very futile, B) because almost nobody reads them. :D Posting rules imo serves only the purpose to be on the right side, of someone complains about TDs decisions. Cheers Al

Chat between partners during bidding allowed?
xx1943 replied to bb116's topic in General Bridge Discussion (not BBO-specific)
Hi Epeeist, Many thanks for the flowers. The tournament must be on of these 1) ** Very Quick and Nice ** 4 rounds 3 boards 6min/board Pairs every day on 6:20am CET = 0:20am EDT 2) ** Not Quick but nice ** Adhoc Indy 4 or 5 boards unclocked with playing TD's. I know playing TD's are undesired but imo in this format it is ok and works very well. Cheers Al -
Just to my knowledge:  What reason could there be to post hidden text? B) Al
