  1. No declarer played it that way. That was the reason, why I posted this hand here. Though the tourney was restricted to beginneres and intermedistes, I was astonished, that nobody played it along the rite line.
  2. yep 2 of the WEST players did hold up the A of ♦.
  3. Hi all, this hand I offered the participants of my Indy with prepared hand for Billies. No declarer found the rite line. Many defenders took the first diamond, when declarer played (as all did) EDIT by XX1943: K or Q of ♦ in the first round of that suit. their A of diamonds. Traveller [hv=d=n&v=n&n=saq4haq72d92ckj73&w=st95ht96dajtc9854&e=skj86hkj54d86cqt2&s=s732h83dkq7543ca6]399|300|Scoring: IMP[/hv] West North East South - 1NT Pass 3NT Pass Pass Pass S6 S2 ST SQ D9 D8 DQ DA S9 S4 SJ S3 S8 S7 S5 SA D2 D6 DK DJ D3 DT H2 HJ HT HA H4 H3 C3 CT CA C4 D7 H6 H7 H5 D5 C5 HQ SK D4 C8 C7 C2 C6 C9 CK CQ CJ HK H8 H9 think here we must begin our teaching. :) Al
  4. Hi Eric this is a 1♦ opening without counting Zar-points too. If you rebid spades twice or have to introduce them at a high level (say 4 ♠), partner must know, that this is a so called "length-reverse". In Germany this is standard. yes, I hope, pd is not unsuspecting. :P Maybe it is better to discuss this with your pd. Cheers Al
  5. Hi I'm missing the very important issue of signals. When a signal is attitude, showing count, suit preference, smith-peter, trump-echo ....... Probably half the time they are defending and I saw a lot of Billies not aware of the general principles of signalling. I don't think a discussion about UDCA or standard is helpful, becoze it is proved that ther is no difference. Both have there merits and advantages. Cheers Al
  6. Playing 2♥ as 11+ you had to bid 1NT b4. Now only 4♠ is logical. 3NT without ♣ is a great gamble.
  7. Hi all, yesterday I saw the result of a ACBL tournament. The first (73%) got 0.8 MP. :( :D :o The 20. (47%) was 4. in his section and got 0.28 MP. :P  :P Seems the awards are given for playing there not for playing well. :) B) Cheers Al
  8. 3 NT what else? ;) Are you convincing your pard, that he was wrong in doubling or bidding 4 ♦? :D Ron: I won't tell you what happened, but my teammate said another call was 100% clear. Please tell the story. Might be very interesting. cheers Al
  9. After this bidding and no 5-carder I think, they have nothing to spare, therefore I would choose the passive lead of ♥8.
  10. err.. free are you sure about half your statement? When the nine wins (north having QTxx), you have your three tricks.. the 9 and then the AK. I think what you meant to say, is that it loses to north holding Q87x and south stiff TEN... Hi Free, hi Ben, if South has the stiff 10, this comes down in the first trick and falls under the K. Now 3 tricks are no problem, by leading towards the 9. Sry I forgot to say. Certainly go up with the K, if North shows out at the second round. Your hidden solution is 100% mines, Ben. I only forgot to mentions the "obvious" cases, where someone shows out. Al
  11. Billies put this to your standard safety-plays: It seems strange, but if you think over it, it makes sense. Hidden solution: Ciao Al
  12. Hi all, To continue here a very common situation: I set the second in my today's Indy and only two declarer got it rite. traveller [hv=n=s5432&w=s&e=s&s=skj1098]399|300|#14a Lose only 1 trick! You have enough entries to dummy[/hv] [hv=n=s5432&w=s&e=s&s=skj1098]399|300|#14a Lose only 1 trick! You have enough entries to dummy[/hv] How do play? Sincerly Al
  13. Hi you are rite. Sry for this. I didn't want disturb Ben thread. Al
  14. Hmhhh I'm wondering why there are no responses to these puzzles. Are they too easy? I set the second in my today's Indy and only two declarer got it rite. traveller The other 5, who won 4♥, got it, because RHO took A of ♥ at once in the hope of a diamond ruff. cheers Al
  15. Hi all, Ben opened a threat about how to play suit combinations. Suit combinations 1-4 To continue here a very common situation: [hv=n=s5432&w=s&e=s&s=skj1098]399|300|#5a Lose only 1 trick! You have enough entries to dummy[/hv] [hv=n=s5432&w=s&e=s&s=skj1098]399|300|#5a Lose only 1 trick! You have enough entries to dummy[/hv] Sincerly Al
  16. 1NT on the first showing 6-9 HCP no mayor. 1NT is also necessary as a sort of preempt against opponents bidding majors, esp. in MP. As Peter said the second is a toss-up. In IMPs I would bid for sure. In MP I guess I would pass. Al
  17. Hi all, Hand A: [hv=d=s&v=e&s=sa10987haj109dxxxcx]133|100|Scoring: IMP[/hv] Hand B: [hv=d=s&v=e&s=sa10987haj109dxxxcx]133|100|Scoring: IMP[/hv] I'm interested in your opinions which of the two hands you would open first seat white against red in the first hand of a long team-match. I prefer to open both. But the second only, because I play the weak NT (12-14). But if I had to decide, that I'm allowed only one of them to open, I would choose the unbalanced 9 pointer. Would the vulnerability or the type of scoring change your mind in one way or the other? Cheers Al
  18. ok, but what do you bid instead of X. I was not happy with my double, but I thought it would give me the most possibilities: 3NT; 3♠X penalty pass; The problem is clear: how to come to a minor suit, if pd bis as expected 4♥. But what do you bid instead of X. Maybe 3NT is the last makable game. What if pd has: [hv=s=skxxhaxxdkjxxckjx]133|100|[/hv] :) 4♦ is not forcing; remains only 4♣ to bid. cheers Al
  19. I like this logic. What would you do if partner bids 6H and the next hand bids 6S? ben double to show, that I don't have first round spade control. Pass would be forcing and showing spade A or void.
  20. [hv=d=s&v=e&n=sj986543hj96d54cj&w=skhkq2dkjt8ckt764&e=s72h53daq76caq982&s=saqthat874d932c53]399|300|Scoring: MP[/hv] Bidding: S_ _W_ _N_ _E_ p.... 1♦. 3♠... X XX.. p.... p.... 4♦ 4♠. 5♣.. p.... 6♣ ;) p.... p.... p.... Hi all what is your opinion about this bidding? Cheers Al
  21. Hi perhaps you want to learn something about percentages Suit-break-calculator Missing-cards-calculator How percentages change How to calculate percentages All these and many more useful links you can find here. Cheers Al
  22. Hi Draw 3 rounds of hearts and look at the hiddden solution from MILA85 of the original hand. Cheers Al
  23. Hi Ron that is exactly Kaplan-Sheinwold long before 2/1 was invented. regards Al
  24. hi helium I agree with luke!! :) pls solve. The story may be of interest. :P ty Al
  25. Hi I'm a bit confused and not sure, who is talking about which hand. I have seen no solution for the original 6♥ (or did I overlook something?) and I'm very interested, because I can't solve. Al
