Well of all users, you should like this threads, as they were written in response to your direct request in the advanced/expert thread you entitled squeeze, where you said... that you " Would like to recognise squeeze possibilities faster at the table" and that you would like to "Easier recognise how to play the hand" Then you asked some questions. Two stuck out... Question: - Any good articles about squeezes on the internet? - Other tips on how to study and manage this are very welcome? Since I had long ago formalized how I view exotic (and other squeezes) into categories, and since there was no good articles on my method on the internet (or anywhere but on my computer), I thought I could help with both of these questions at one time. At the rate I am posting, it will take more than a month just to post the method.. and then lots of example hands in example threads as well... HI BEN THIS TOPIC IS THE BEST I'VE EVER READ ABOUT SQUEEZES. Please continue. I gave my mentees the advice, to print the posts out and conserve them til they'll need them. btw. Is there a possibility to print a whole thread or yet better save it to a file? Thanks a lot for your effort. Sincerly Al

That is how I played South put me back to dummy with a spade. I came then to the ending, Ben described without CLub 9 from North and Club xx from EAST and WEST. Al I am lost.. if you cashed club ACE, how did you make 11 tricks? South really had a siiff club high honor? Hard to believe.... Ben Hi Ben you are not lost ;) Think this was a misunderstanding due to my bad English. :P Here the full hand, as I played it: [hv=d=n&v=n&n=sqj2h2dt63cqj9752&w=sa65hj976daqckt64&e=sk43hkqt8dk54ca83&s=st987ha543dj9872c]399|300|Scoring: IMP[/hv] West North East South - Pass 1NT Pass 2♣ Dbl 2♥ Pass 3NT Pass Pass Pass D2 DA D3 D4 H9 H2 H8 H3 H6 D6 HQ HA ST SA S2 S3 DQ DT D5 D7 C4 C9 CA D8 HK H4 HJ C5 HT H5 H7 C2 DK D9 S5 SJ SK S7 S6 SQ C8 S8 C6 CJ C7 C3 DJ CT CK CQ S4 S9 Sincerly Al

Hi Mauro Sorry not rite. If either opponent has singleton J and you play A and another, they will play a third round of hearts and you are a trick short. You make 4♠+4♥+1♦-ruff+2♣=11 tricks Regards Al

Which system would you teach a new player
xx1943 replied to ArcLight's topic in General Bridge Discussion (not BBO-specific)
Yes, the more important is to teach a basic and simple system (like sayc or french standard) on which you can easily add gadgets in the future without modifying all the strutures ! :P Hi Where do I find notes about French standard? thanks Sincerly Al -
This hand occured yesterday evening in a Swiss-team: [hv=d=n&v=a&w=sa83hj976daqck1054&e=sk92hkq108dk45ca82]266|100|Scoring: IMP Bidding went: West North East South ------ Pass 1NT. Pass 2♣.... X.... 2♥.. Pass 3N.... Pass Pass Pass [/hv] X was explained by South as lead director. North was a well known expert, South one of his students but advanced+ in BBO-terms. Without any thought South leads ♦ 2 (3th or 5th) <_< She didn't obey partners lead director. Questions 1) what distribution has South probably? 2) How do you manage to make 11 tricks against best defense without venturing taking 10 tricks for sure.? Overtricks are not so unimportant in team-play and you shld try for it, if it is sure The second overtrick got us IMP and we won by 18:12 instead of 17:13 and finished 2. instead of 3. :P Regards Al

Hi Ben 100% agree. You forgot, that you win if WEST has the stiff J too. make 6,217% additional But: If you lose the first or second heart trick, defender will play not diamond, not hearts but CLUBS. e.g. if you come to your hand with a spade, lead a heart against the Q and LHO has the singleton J. RHO wins and plays a club, leaving this situation: [hv=n=sj98ht7dcat86&s=sakha964dj98c]133|200|[/hv] Here I missed that now a cross-ruff is possible, but to execute that, the spades must be not worse than 4/2, letting away a possible diamond overruff. Or did I miss something again? Therefore I find as new figures: line 1: A and small wins against 2/2 (40,7%) singleton K either (13,6%) and singleton J either, if spades are 3/3 or 4/2 (13,6%*0,84=11,4%). Sums up to 65,7% line2: Lead the Q to finesse wins against 2/2 (40,7%), singleton J with WEST (6,3%), and singleton J or K or KJx with EAST, if Spades are 3/3 or 4/2 (31,1%*0,84=26,1%). Sums up to 73,12%. line3: Lead small against the Q winsagainst 2/2 (40,7%) and singleton J or K or KJx with WEST, if Spades are 3/3 or 4/2(31,1%*0,355=26,1%). Sums up to 66,8%. Ben, you are rite as usual line 2: finesse the Q ist best. Regards Al

You cannot win against heart 4-0 distribution. If hearts are 3-1 and opponents gain the lead with the first or second heart trick, a club lead cuts declarer communication with the table. Therefore you can win only against hearts 2-2 or darwing 2 rounds of hearts without losing the lead. You win 1) By leading A of hearts and a small against every 2/2 (40,70%) distr. or either opponent having K singleton (12,45%) sums up to 53,15% 2) By playing the Q from the table against every 2-2 (40,7%) and West having J singleton (6,22%) sums up to 46,92% 3) Playing small against the Q wins only against all 2-2 (40,7%) Therefore line 1 is best. Which system would you teach a new player
xx1943 replied to ArcLight's topic in General Bridge Discussion (not BBO-specific)
Hi Agree 100%. Playing the cards is much more important than bidding. Bad bidding often results in good scores, if you play the hand excellent. Easy-Bridge as described seems a very nice educational tool. I'll try it. Thanks for the hint. I like KS best too, but in US there are very few people playing KS. Therefore my advice: Bidding system should as simple as poosible. Sincerly Al -
Penalty on diamonds and spades. with heart invite I can raise the hearts. Bid what you have (R. Markus)
-
I don't like hand II. Open this anaemic diamonds and what is your rebid after 1 spade? 1 NT with spade single? (grrrrr) 2 Diamonds with this suit (grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr) I don't open this Al
-
If someone is invisible, you'll see him /her, if he/she is kibitzing or playing.
-
3NT is a horrible bid with 4243 distribution and deserves a bad score.
-
exactly. Gives you a lot of chances. May work if spades are 5/1 too, if ♦A is with LHO.
-
Hi Earl Sry you are wrong. Look at Ben's solution above. If LHO doesn't cover the heart J (If he does the contract is -1 for sure) you play Diamond K, Club K, Club ruff and K of diamonds leaving[hv=n=skhadc64&w=shq1076dc&e=sahd87cq&s=shk98d10c]399|300|[/hv] now lead diamond 10 from your hand and overrruff LHO,lead a club back and insert heart 8 or 9 and LHO is endplayed. There is another winning line: Finesse the 9 instead of the J of hearts and hope LHo doesn't cover. Sry this is the way as Cascades Lin-converter exposes the deal. I use it for convenience. Rite you are in BBO many people bid too much and double too rare. I said only be cautious. Sometimes you'll give declarer the hint how to play the hand vy your double. Btw. The increasing number of artificial doubles( negative, responsive, thrump ...) result in missing many good penalties. Regards Al

Introduction to squeeze plays
xx1943 replied to inquiry's topic in Intermediate and Advanced Bridge Discussion
Hi Ben Very cute example. But perhaps it may help the beginners to have one more hint: hidden. Regards Al -
Hi Billies Yesterday I misplayed a hand, which I should have made after the penalty double. [hv=d=w&v=a&n=sk765ha5dkjck8642&w=sjt4hqt763d32ca97&e=saq32hdq8754cqj53&s=s98hkj9842dat96ct]399|300|Scoring: IMP[/hv] West North East South Pass 2♣! Pass 2♥ Precision Pass Pass Dbl 3♥ Dbl Pass Pass Pass SJ S5 S3 S8 ST S6 S2 S9 S4 S7 SQ H2 CT CA C2 C5 D3 DJ DQ DA [hv=d=w&v=a&n=sk765ha5dkjck8642&w=sjt4hqt763d32ca97&e=saq32hdq8754cqj53&s=s98hkj9842dat96ct]399|300|Scoring: IMP[/hv] You lost 3 tricks and must hold your trump loser to 1. How are the hearts distributed? 5/0? 4/1? Is it possible, that East has a single Q or 10? How do you play now? Here as hidden hint how I went down. Hope you'll do better. Nobody made 9 tricks in hearts, but most aren't doubled, so they had no reason to find the winning line. What you should learn: Be cautious in doubling. Maybe your double enables declarer to win an otherwise unwinnable contract. :D Sincerly Al

Time for BB Forum FAQs document ?
xx1943 replied to Chamaco's topic in General Bridge Discussion (not BBO-specific)
Hi all, Great idea, but maybe much work to do. IMO greater effort than creating FAQ will be to keep it up to date. When I came first to this forum my first question was "Are there FAQ?" Btw. My experience was that every question I posted here was answered in short time mostly with the link to a previous topic. (Mostly from Ben) Search is great, if you chose "search entire post". Search has one flaw: you cannot search for items, which have only 3 characters like "lin" or "MP" or "IMP". -
Hi Ben, this thread is great, because your explanations are better and clearer as everything I've read in boox. This thread is a must for every player to improve his/her skills. :) Many thanks. ;) Al

Hmmmmh We'll make 4 spades maybe 5. I have 1-3 defensive tricks. Guess partner has no defensivie trick. How can I manage to get a X on 4♠? Maybe a shy bid of 3 spades conceals my distributional strength best. My bid is 3♠. Later 4 and even 5♠. What I do if opps bid 6♣ ??? Probably X. cheers Al

Hi For those who don't like math here a nice link: Missing cards calculator Have fun with it Al

Hi Torsten no idea how to do with the actual software <_< but I would be very interested in this format too. I hope anyone of our experts has an idea. :D Cheers Al

Hi Bruce Agree 100%. Players waiting for the TD to come to their table cannot imagine, how much stress the TD-calls make, especially because they popup in the forground and break down whatever you are just doing (subbing; adjusting). Sincerly Al

Example why I hate regular 2/1
xx1943 replied to pclayton's topic in General Bridge Discussion (not BBO-specific)
opener can have a strong 3-card support for spades too and no heart stop i.e: [hv=s=sakjhxxdaqxxxcaqx]133|100|[/hv] Don't tell me you open this one 2NT. Al
