Hi all My pd and I had a big desaster in an important team-event. [hv=d=s&v=n&n=saq10982hk42dj2c87&s=sk4haqj103dakq3c32]133|200|Scoring: IMP[/hv] Bidding went: 1 ♥ --- 1 ♠ --- 3 ♦ --- 3 ♥ --- 3 ♠ --- 4 NT -- 5 ♣ --- 6 ♥ --- RKCB 3140 5♣ showing 1 or 3 Keys Please tell me your opinions: 1) Do you like the 3♠ bid? My consideration was that I would like better to play in the spade 5/2 than in the heart 5/2-fit. 2) Does 3♠ show a club-singleton? 3) Which suit is fixed after 3♠? Hearts or spades or none? 4) What do you think of North bidding 5♥ instead of 4NT, pointing on the weakness in Clubs? 5) How do you give the blame for this hand to N and S? Regards Al

Biggest problem I have playing this game
xx1943 replied to sceptic's topic in Intermediate and Advanced Bridge Discussion
Hi Wayne You are rite in taking all the time you need to make your plan for the play. I would add to lukewarms scheme of ARCH two more In NT count you sure winners and look, where you can get the missing to fulfil your contract. in suit-contract count your loser in the main-hand and look, how dummy can take care of the necesaary number of losers by ruffing, by providing high crads to discard your loser. BUT after you took the time to make your plan don't think after every trick. that is annoying. :D Only if something goes an other way as you assumed you may take a second timeout to analyze the new situation. Another advise: Lool for partner and opponents who are in the same mood as you. Regards Al -
Hi all two questions about teaching tables: 1) You can chnage the vulnerability of hands in the movie by clicking in the upper left corner. Is it possible to change the dealer as well? 2) Is it possible to attach to a teaching table a linfile like rules to a tournament. this would be a very useful tool to provide much more informations as in the chatbox. I would like to give my students additional contents to my lesson. Ty for all hints how to do. Regards Al

Hi sry it ewas MP. I Messed something up putting this hand in the linconverter. Ben I got the awsome heart lead. Not diamond. I went wrong thinking the opening leader had found the best lead, I was not thinking of that he made the least bad lead. Ty Bob, for this point. The "free finesse" in clubs isn't so free as it seems, if the finesse loses a second heart will come back and I'm -1 in 4♥. Al

Hi all this is a hand, where I was proud because I executed a nice end-play. But surprise it got only 11%. :D :( :o OK, most of the declarers got lead in a black suit and had one more trick from the beginning. Some EAST went up with the A of ♦, when the 6 was led. My deliberation to finesse the J was: A priori it is a pure guess 50%-50% If WEST has The A of ♦, he may go up, with the Q he must play low. Therefore the chance is better for the finesse (and I have enough to discard). [hv=d=w&v=n&n=sk82hakt83d6caqt6&w=sjt96hjdqt93ckj95&e=sa73h952da72c8432&s=sq54hq764dkj854c7]399|300|Scoring: IMP[/hv] West North East South Pass 1♥ Pass 4♥ Pass Pass Pass ♥2 ♥4 ♥J ♥A ♦6 ♦2 ♦J ♦Q ♠J ♠2 ♠7 ♠Q ♦4 ♦3 ♥3 ♦7 ♣A ♣2 ♣7 ♣5 ♣6 ♣3 ♥6 ♣9 ♦5 ♦9 ♥8 ♦A ♣T ♣4 ♥7 ♣J ♦K ♦T ♣Q ♥5 ♥9 ♥Q ♠6 ♥T ♦8 ♠9 ♠8 ♣8 What is your opinion? Hi all This hand occurred as #1 in a BIL-team-match Table 1 bid 4 ♠+1. Table 2 bid 6♣ +1 when EAST chose to rebid 3♣ instead of 2♠ or 3 ♠ [hv=d=n&v=n&n=s6h9876dkqt72ct75&w=sa4hakt43dcqj8642&e=sjt87532hqda3cak9&s=skq9hj52dj98654c3]399|300|Scoring: IMP[/hv] 7 ♣ is not foolproof but worth to bid imo. But to be honest I see no way to get even to 6♣. My pd and I would probably end up in 4♠, 5♠ or 6♠ How do you bid with your favourite pd this ugly hand. Do you have the tools, to find out The spade flaw, the Club fit and the heart Q. What is your bid with the WEST hand, when pd opens 1 ♠? Do you bid 2♥ or 2♣? Regards Al

Hi I can give you a mathematical proof, that the so called "law" of symmetrie is wrong, if the cards are randomly shuffled. Shuffling maybe the point. 1) Shuffling by hand could be but in reality never is random. 2) "Random" dealt hands by PC cannot be mathematical random at all. PC's can only produce "pseudo-random-numbers" Sincerly Al

Assign the Blame?
xx1943 replied to badderzboy's topic in Intermediate and Advanced Bridge Discussion
Hi Steve imo the definition of your bids is the problem. After the intervention you are in a better situation than without, bcause you have ab idle bid (double) and new meanings for all jumps and the cuebid of 2♥ In my system (I call it KS ince 40 years) the meanings are: double is negative and shows ecaxtly 4 spades 6+ HCP unlimited just as if you had bid 1♠ without intervention. 1♠ shows 5+ spades and 6+ HCP unlimited 2♥ shows the äquivalent for an strong jump shift. Btw. I have very strict appointments about SJS: The strong jump shift has three different meanings: 1) tremendous support for openers suit 2) 6+ solid suit playable in 6 opposite a singleton 3) 18+ HCP any distribution 2♠ preempt. Same as a 2♠ opener. To blame is your system imo. :o Sincerly Al -
100% agree. Don't try to be perfect, state your rules and decide accordingly. In summer 2004, here in this forum we had a great discussion about how to direct a tourney in BBO. Gweny started a thread Adjustment questions here. The last was Nr.13 as I remember. It was very instructive for me to read all the different opinions. The conclusion for me was: State your rules and try to go with them. Remain polite even if players are rude and ................... Tell Uday about every rudeness. Good luck in your tourneys, sure you will do fine Regards Al
-
Hi Kathryn, I know your problem. I had it similar, when I began hosting torneys. It would be nice, of you could tell all registered people the important things about your tourney. But believe me it is futile and not worth the effort to change the software. Most guys never read rules, never read chat-info, never come to this forum, never hear what someone else has to say. Post your rules in the *.linfiles, decide accordingly and if someone doesn't agrre with your decision, tell him, he should have read your rules. :P If someone becomes rude :o :o tell it abuse@.... (UDAY) Don't try to be perfect in hosting tourneys, just host. Most people are glad, if there is a tourney, they can play, forget the others. :P Regards Al

Hi Ken I disagree with your post and imo it is necessary to dissent vehemently. It is completely wrong to think the skill of a player depends on how many conventions he learned. Some of the best players in the world (i.e. R. Markus) played only very few conventions. Technically it is only the play of the cards, that makes a good or a bad player. More important than conventions are judgement, table presence and pd-ship-cultivation. It is very important to tell this people, who want to learn bridge or improve their bridge. Al

Hi Hannie That is just my experience and the reason why I posted thid poll here. Al

Hi Eric, Compare these two: The singles in the second distribution make it not more probable, that an opponent has an single. [hv=n=sakjxxhaqxxdxckxx&s=sxxxxhxdakxxcaqxx]133|200|[/hv] [hv=n=sakjxxhaqxxdxckxx&s=sxxxxhxdakxxcaqxx]133|200|[/hv] Sincerly Al

Another suit combination
xx1943 replied to xx1943's topic in Intermediate and Advanced Bridge Discussion
I'm astonished. :) :o :o Why are there no replies to this "simple" combination? Did I something wrong? Is the question too simple or too difficult? Terence Reese, Albert Dormer give in their "The Complete Book of Bridge" a very similar situation. [hv=n=sq1063&w=s&e=s&s=sa954]399|300|[/hv] They write: "This is a tricky situation because declarer has to take into account what WEST might do if he held such and such. Probably the best line is to lead low from the closed hand and put in the 10 if there is no reaction. If this loses to the Jack, the 9 should be finessed on the next round." Imo it is far better to play the A first and then low against the 10. This line has a chance of 67,3%. Losing only against EAST having KJxxx(2%), KJxx(8,5%), KJx(10,1%), Jx(10,1%) and void(2%). Against the Reese/Dormer recommended line has only 61,6% success. Can anyone tell me, where I'm wrong. Many thanks. Regards Al -
[hv=n=sak1098&w=s&e=s&s=s7654]399|300|[/hv] You play the A and EAST produces the Q. Next time you play the 7 and WEST contributes the 2. Other things being equal (no hints from bidding or further play, or ... ) do you finesse or play for a drop. Imo the finesse has a success of 65%, my regular partner always states it is 50/50. What do you think about? Regards Al
-
Hi all Terence Reese writes in his "On Play" page 12/13: "....if you have yourself a unbalanced hand pattern, such as 6-5-1-1, then you are likely to find that your long suits break badly against you. It must be stated, that this argument has no support among mathematicians" Some of my partners swear, that the likelyhood of a singleton in opponents hand is much greater, if you are looking at a singleton in your hand or dummy. Imo this is pure superstition. What do you think? Regards Al

Another suit combination
xx1943 replied to xx1943's topic in Intermediate and Advanced Bridge Discussion
Hi all, Oops no answers. Did I something wrong in my question. I thought this hand a good experience for beginners and intermediates how to chose the best line. But all were invited to answer. If it is due to the exact probabilities, forget it, just tell me, how do you play this suit? (1) A and (if nothing happens) small to the 10 (2) A and (if nothing happens) small to the Q (3) Lead the Q and finesse, if the finesse loses, finesse the 10. (4) Lead the Q and A, if the finesse loses. (5) Lead the 10 and finesse, if the finesse loses, finesse the Q. (6) Lead the 10 and A, if the finesse loses. (7) Small against 10 and finesse Q later (8) Small against 10 and A later (7) Small against Q and finesse 10 later (8) Small against Q and A later (9) Did I miss a line????????? looking forward your answers Al -
[hv=n=sq102&w=s&e=s&s=sa9765]399|300|Other things being equal, enough transportation, what is the rite line line to play this combination?[/hv] Hi Billies, Other things being equal (No hints from biddding, earlier play, transportation ....) what is the rite line to play this combination? What are the exact odds to succeed with????????? . Please work it out en detail: What are the possible lines of play? Which line succeeds with which distribution? To minimize the math: KJ8xx maybe distributed in 24 different ways. :P You may look up the percentages here. I'm looking forward your answers. Regards Al

Hi all this hand ocurred in ACBL-tour yesterday. The hand was played 17 times. [hv=d=n&v=n&s=sak8hkq82daqj94ck]133|100|Scoring: MP hand is rotated by 90° degrees. THis is orig. East's hand [/hv] I'm looking forward, what you all bid and WHY? 6 times RHO opened 3♣; once 4♣ in 3. place white versus red. Once pd opened 2♠ 9 times the strong hand was allowed to open and chose 1♦ twice 2♣ 6-times 2NT once This was the full hand: [hv=d=s&v=e&n=s92ht53d32ca86532&w=sqt654hj9dkt876ct&e=sak8hkq82daqj94ck&s=sj73ha764d5cqj974]399|300|Scoring: IMP[/hv] Btw. Do you think it wise to open this hand with 3♣?? Regards Al

Hi all this board came up in ACBL-tourney 2005-1-1. Only two pairs found the grand. Is there a bidding, where you can count 13 tricks for sure in SAYC, 2/1, precision or other? Is there a way to find out heart Q? [hv=d=s&v=n&n=sq9862ht76dk854c9&w=sa5hqda63caqt8754&e=s4hakj2djt97ckj63&s=skjt73h98543dq2c2]399|300|Scoring: IMP[/hv] This is how I bid sitting EAST. Probably 4♣ would be better than 4NT. West North East South - - - Pass 1♣ Pass 1♥ Pass 3♣ Pass 4NT Pass RKCB 3041 5♣ Pass 5NT Pass Asking for Kings 6♣ Pass Pass Pass

Which system would you teach a new player
xx1943 replied to ArcLight's topic in General Bridge Discussion (not BBO-specific)
HI Earl, 100% agree. :) I never saw a better description of this issue. You write down in a pefect manner, what I'm always try to teach my mentees in the BIL. :) Do you allow me your post to copy, paste and distribute to my BIL-mentees. :) I'd be very happy, if this is possible, because my English is too bad  :o  to write such an excellent post. Many thanks Sincerly Al = xx1943 -
