Sorry my mistake it was MP-scoring. Al

The following hand was played 4.25 tricks. East called me to adjust. He wanted to adjust to 3NT-1. [hv=d=e&v=n&n=sat75hq8dt953cq94&w=sk6432hj3dakj72c7&e=sj9ht74dq864ckjt2&s=sq8hak9652dca8653]399|300|Scoring: IMP[/hv] W....N....E....S .............p....1♥ 1♠..1N..p....3♣ 3♦..3N..p....p p East leads ♦4 1. ♦4 ♣3 ♦A 3 won by W 2. ♦K 5 6 ♣5 won by W 3. ♦2 9 Q ♣6 won by E 4. ♦8 ♣8 ♦7 :) 10 won by N 5. ♥Q Only 4.25 tricks are played, but 9 tricks are sure, maybe 10 if East feels squeezed and North guesses the situation rite. My decision: 3NT made. I would like to hear the opinions of our experts. Thanks all. Al

very simple: don't host unclocked events ;) Al :P

I would be very happy if the results of such discussion could be published so that newcomers hasn't to invent the wheel over and over. I would like to have clear cut rules concerning the LAWS of bridge in BBO. My opinion is that experts should state the rules for online-bridge just as ACBL does for real life bridge. Al
-
I try to direct a small tourney "Very Quick and Nice"; MP; 4*3*6. I'm not sure whether players like cut or not. I'm not sure when a cut should be set at which height it should be. Therefore I posted this poll. Al
-
RayUK, you hit exactly the point. It is strongly requested to educate people to read the tournament rules. Different TD have different objektives with their tourney and every player should agree with the TD or enter another tourney. Al

I bid 6♠ in IMPs. As Edgar Kaplan said: Bid as high as you want to go anyway. In MP is every bluff vom pass to 3NT avaible depending on the skill of opponents and what I did them last week. As opener I would bid 4NT (ACOL asking for Aces). :) Don't like such distributions, because don't like to play lotterie. :) Al
-
The analysis how good ur bidding was depends not on seeing the EW-hands. Looking if finesses are right and trumps standing 5:0 is futile "result mearching". :) What I really miss in Partnership Bidding is a realistic bidding by EW. Not only every board 1 ♠, if u programmed that, independent how many spades NS have in their combined hands. Or are I to stupid to programm this right? Al
-
There are apparently different opinions among the experts. It's very difficult for a TD-rookie like me to come to the right decision in this case. :) :o I would like BBO would announce common rules about all such controversial things. :) Al

What makes a good bridge player
xx1943 replied to sceptic's topic in General Bridge Discussion (not BBO-specific)
Here are some hints for you. Look at this books. They are bit older, but lost nothing of their importance. CHARLES H. GOREN: PLAY WINNING BRIDGE with any partner EVEN A STRANGER S. J. SIMON: WHY YOU LOSE AT BRIDGE :) Charles H. Goren: BRIDGE IS MY GAME  There are newer books for sure. But I don't have any space in my bookcase to buy them. :) -
Hi Ben, many thanks for this link. Al

Last month I posted here a problem I had. Declarer claimed and afterwards finessed in spades. Many thanks for all replies. I didn't find this post yet. Therefore I start a new one. In between Ben found the link for me: (many thanks Ben) ;) old post on hooking after claim Today I directed a little tour and the following hand came up a yellow sitting East. [hv=d=w&v=n&n=sak73h987d875cj93&w=sjt42hadkt42cqt84&e=sq985hqt65dq6ck72&s=s6hkj432daj93ca65]399|300|Scoring: MP[/hv] The bidding was: pass pass pass 4 Hearts pass pass pass the play: 1. ♠ J A 5 6 won by N 2. ♥ 7 5 4 A won by W 3. ♦ 2 5 Q A won by S 4. ♣ 6 4 9 K won by E 5. ♦ 6 9 10 7 won by W 6. ♦ K 8 ♣ 2 ♦ 3 won by W 7. ♣ Q 3 7 A won by S 8. ♣ 5 J 8 ♥ 6 won by E 9. ♠ 8 south claims all 5 tricks; claim rejected 9. ......... ♦ J ♠ 2 K won by N 10. ♥ 8 10 J ♣ 10 won by S 11. ♥ K ♦ 4 ♥ 9 Q won by S 12. 13 won by I was called and the yellow (East) said finessing after claim is disallowed. I looked the board most precisely. I learned in TD-forum to look what the earlier play was. Declared finessed succesfull in hearts, therefore he knows East has the Q of ♥. In this sense my decision is: The finesse is allowed. I am not happy with my decision, because in my opinion in real life there is no finesse allowed after a claim. But I know also claims are desired in BBO. In real life there are very few claims at all. Please repeat the notes to my last post (disapeared ?) :D Al

How do you think you can get any reasonable result, when so many people come here to vote. Is there a possibility to make a poll in BBO with 1000 participants? If not I think best is to offer different formats of tournaments and see how many registrations you get. Al

Is bad bridge acceptable for tournament winners?
xx1943 replied to anssibragge's topic in BBO Tournament Directors Forum
Mike you made exactly the point. I'm playing in BBO only for fun or practizing my partnership for real life. :D I don't understand all these complaints about cheating, bad alerting etc. :D I try to play good bridge and enjoy our well bid und played slams, games and partscores. I complaint about my mistakes; nothing else. So what. Al -
What's the problem? This anaemic heartsuit you can't bid at the 2-level. My strength is in minors. I treat the hearts as fourcard suit. Al
-
My bid with or without X is 1NT (forcing): After X 1NT can't be natural even if you don't play 1NT forcing. For details: Kaplan-Sheinwold Al
-
Pds 2♦ is undoubtly forcing. So I'll never pass. I showed 5!S with my first bid. I don't know ihis minors 4:5, 4:6 or 5:6. I don't know the quality of his minors. Therefore 2NT is the least of all evils. ;) Al

I'm in BBO since 12/2003, I'm in this forum since 3/2004, I'm a rookie in directing tournaments. Since 5/2004 Gweny and Showle teached me in directing tournaments (many thanks ♥) and I tried to direct some small tournamnets myself. In played every day in various tournaments mostly Fun&Fishy. I've read with great interest the discussion in this forum players complaining about TD and TD complaining about players. I believe the greatest problems - just as in real life too - are missing informations and bad communication besides the lack of goodwill not to assume others having wicked intentions. :o I play bridge in real life for about 40 years and played in high level contests. I know the rules of this bridge exactly. But I was often very confused and unsure what to do in BBO: :P  :( - how to alert - how to sub for myself - I thought TD knew everything, had time enough like TD in real life, could see the history etc. - I didn't know all the abbreviations in chat - I didn't know how to fill in and use a CC. - I didn't know that nobody uses CC. - I didn't know how to use "HELP". I didn't find the INDEX-button befor inquiry told me (many thanks). - I didn't even knew the meaning of SAYC and 2/1 - ........... :) - ........... I made therefore many mistakes and produced a lot of trouble without any intention to do so. :o I believe problems among players, among TD and players would reduce drastic, if there were a short information about all these things available for all who register first time to BBO or register first time in an tournament. All these issues are explained exactly in "HELP" but offen I didn't find what I was searching for. About the skill of TD, I think there should be two different type of tournaments: - small and short tournaments just to have fun and play bridge for entertainment a while need no TD, who has the book of rules under his arm.c Such tourn. could be easily directed by rookies like me. - long and great tournaments should be directed by enough experienced TD. The coming ACBL ruled tournaments are a good example. I'm very happy to have the opportunity to play bridge in BBO. BBO is the greatest and best online bridgeclub I know. If I can help improving this wonderful site, let me know. ;) xx1943 = Al

Think the experienced TD should sit together and make a wish list and set priorities. :) UDAY can't do all this at once of any. Perhaps a poll will do it also. ;) Al

I personally would prefer 24+ boards like a tourney in the local club in real life. But just as well I lke 4 boards in between for relaxing. I think people are looking for tournaments of any length. very short: If I create a 4x1x7 indy with 60 entries it takes 2 minutes till all seats are reserved. medium: There are many very attractive tourneys with 8-12 boards with a lot of players in BBO. Exactly that is my opinion: BBO is already doing a very good job of this and is an a very good way to improve further. :D Al
-
Playing inverted minors I cannot imagine any hand not bidding 3♦ in the first bid and afterwards wants to signoff in 3♦ after pd shows 18-19 HCP and maybe have only 3 ♦. 3 ♦ should be forcing in any system. Al

About BBO trnslation project
xx1943 replied to Erkson's topic in General Bridge Discussion (not BBO-specific)
I agree 100% with erkson and misho. To play online bridge u must know a minimum of English to talk with pd and opps, to understand announcements by TD, answer reasonable after alerting ............... :D :D  :o :(   By the way I want to express my enthusiasm about BBO. I got to know BBO in December 2003 and spent a lot of happy hours here. Many thanks to Fred, UDay .......... and all others, who gave this exciting gift to all bridgeplayers all over the world. Many many thanks.    ;) Hi Claus I tried to translate this paragraph from your poll from English to German in Altavista: RESULT: Meine Stimme ist, in einer Weise zu ändern, daß die kommerziellen Übersetzungshilfsmittel auf NETZ gut sind, BBO Informationen auch betrachtend. Dies heißt Bewegung allgemeines Info vom Klienten in Web site. BACK from German to English My vote wants tons of CHANGES in A way that the commercial translation tools on WEB wants good regarding BBO information too. This means move general info. from the client into Web sites. This thus means into those sites write bridge as 'bridge' ton avoid translation OF the word as it wants wrong translated etc.. In NO way you wants more ever able ton act the 52 different indian LANGUAGES Everyone can make his opinion about the value of this translation himself. :o I personally prefer reading in original English despite my bad knowledge of this language. -
My choice is X (support-double see M.Bergen) showing exactly 3!S with an honour and a fair til inviting hand. If partner now bids 2!S I would pass my ♦ and his ♥ probably badly placed.

HOWTO: Tournament conditions of contest
xx1943 replied to uday's topic in BBO Tournament Directors Forum
Hi UDAY thx for so much help to us. I tried to generate a LIN File with rules for my tourney. I got problems using colors because I'm not familiar with the syntax auf the commands. Could you help me with a link to a brief description of this commands and syntax? . See the section on Text commands for working with squares. Where do I find this section of Text commands? Many thanks. Sincerly xx1943 = Albrecht Hollstein
