Cuebidding and the ace of trumps
fourdad replied to smerriman's topic in Intermediate and Advanced Bridge Discussion
imo, the second that N bids 1H, S is the captain of the hand. At that point, the S hand values at 25 points + N at 13. What is the problem? Bid 4NT, pd shows 2 aces, bid 7. How is this a bad plan? -
Double or 2 Diamonds?

Double or 2 Diamonds?
fourdad replied to dickiegera's topic in Intermediate and Advanced Bridge Discussion
As my reg pds and I would play both 2-3 diamonds as preemptive, I Double. Responder does not have enough to bid (<6) and my pd's pass means: Weak or, clubs with unknown strength. Opener may be the strongest hand at the table. -
Preemptive Hand or Not

Preemptive Hand or Not
fourdad replied to quikwal's topic in Intermediate and Advanced Bridge Discussion
This is a prime example of why I am an advocate for lite, lead directing overcalls. Over 1S, holding the East hand I am AT LEAST going to bid 2H, and perhaps, 2NT, for the lower ranking unbid suits. You think you get to slam then? I will bid 3S every time. -
Don't open 4-4-4-1 hands with 12 or 13 points
fourdad replied to PhilG007's topic in Interesting Bridge Hands
only open 12 pt hands in 1/2 seat that have a 5 card suit and you will not have a problem. -
You are correct, of course. I should have put denies 4S in a NON reversible hand". I stand corrected, Thanks!

The question of the invite is, imo, the wrong question. Your partner, in asking it, is ignoring their own "first error". You have 15 and my rule is to not open NT w/ 2 doubletons, so I like the 1H. Pd should bid 2D, showing 10 and a 5 card suit!! As 2S is a reverse and 2D denies a 4 card spade suit, would you not then think 15+10=25 and bid 3NT? While I get that you do not have a club stop, given where your points are, is it not very likely that pard does in order to have 10 points? If pard has a heart fit or a wildly distributional hand in D's they can always correct.

If 5-5 hands were not powerful in play there would not be Michaels or Unusual NT conventions. Are they less powerful because you are opener? Methinks not. 1♥ 100% of the time.

I am confused over the discussion of 3H. 3H was not bid was it? If 2C is 10+....meaning they are not playing 2/1, then 2H is non forcing showing 5-4 in the majors. If W bids 3H, which I agree is the better bid, that is forcing showing 16+...once partner goes 4H, then W hand increases in value and slam controls are investigated. Doesn't the slam depend on the KS? It could just as easily be in the N hand true?

I teach and use the 3S bid regularly because of hands just like this.

Matchpoints. What do you bid?
fourdad replied to Wayne_LV's topic in Intermediate and Advanced Bridge Discussion
I value this hand at 18 TP's and do not hesitate to bid 4H. -
You are correct that seeing the N hand is not needed to make a decision. Neither would seeing the N hand bias an advanced players decision. Every heard of Curiosity?? GEEZ, so sensitive!!
-
would be nice to see the N hand.

As we play 3♠ as cue asking pd to bid 3NT with a stopper, that is out. partner promises 6+pts and 4 hearts at a minimum. I would revalue openers hand to 19+ and bid 4♥. As I opened, this cannot be preempt. 4♥ clearly conveys my hand to partner and makes him the captain of the hand. Any X or heart continuation is on partner.

Trouble seeing other results after Instant tournament

go to "hands and results" it works from there. It is not that it is low priority, it just takes some time to update. -
Bid this to game or slam
fourdad replied to dickiegera's topic in Intermediate and Advanced Bridge Discussion
I thought I was clear about AVOIDING the reverse. However, give me AK of C and KQ of diamonds in exchange for the honors shown in those suits and I would reverse it every time. There is no such thing as "100%" in any bidding system. -
Bid this to game or slam
fourdad replied to dickiegera's topic in Intermediate and Advanced Bridge Discussion
Would absolutely NEVER misstate the shape by bidding the shorter suit first...EVER, but that is not on point with the hand in front of us, is it? I mean seriously, we can all come up with examples not relevant to the thread, can't we? My suggestion is a direct and reasonable way to bid this hand WITH the interference as it happened, and supports why 1D over 1C is preferable here. It is absolutely relevant that how one will treat subsequent actions is reasoned out before making the first bid. In this case, and I agree that the first bid suit would convey more length in a reverse, as someone else stated mentioned...it just may not ALWAYS be so. This hand is not about reversing, it is about making sure you do not reverse!! -
Bid this to game or slam
fourdad replied to dickiegera's topic in Intermediate and Advanced Bridge Discussion
We had a thread a while back where which minor to open was discussed. At the time, I said it depends on whether you are strong enough to reverse. This hand is an example of that and is why it should open 1D. After the sequence....1D-1S-2S-P-3C-P-?, N now knows that partner has a minimum opener because he did NOT reverse. N counts his pd as minimum (13) and values his hand as 17. Adds to game and under the "one who knows goes" tenet, N bids 5C. If S has 15 he bids 6C. else pass. Bippity boppity BOO!! -
Would you bid at unfav?
fourdad replied to andrei's topic in Intermediate and Advanced Bridge Discussion
It depends on if your agreement is to play 2NT and/or Michaels as preemptive or showing a hand. This hand is too strong for a preemptive 2NT, hence 1H. -
the play of the hand is the wrong question.... why are you in 5h? Slam does not add up from the moment the opening bid is made.
-
"moral courage" What the heck is that in a card game? Are you a lawyer? How could lying to you partner be "moral" anything?
-
I would have bid 2S rather than 2C and then would not have this problem.

I open two clubs and partner jumps to five, but...
fourdad replied to Lovera's topic in Interesting Bridge Hands
I second this! -
it is whatever you and your partner agreed it is!!
