Bid this slam
RunemPard replied to dickiegera's topic in Intermediate and Advanced Bridge Discussion
Have not read every post...but am I crazy for trying to set ♥s as trump? (Now I just need to try and show my ♣ void and find a singleton/void ♦...) Eh...splinter will be fine I guess. :( -
I still say it is 1 down...I am not an expert on the laws, but I do not think that the TD is a mind reader... So my logic says making any claim where you have not fully stated your plans on the play should result in a penalty. Once the defense denies, information has been conveyed. The TD does not have a crystal ball, so be more careful next time and play. Let us pray that this was not a team match of serious/semi-serious players... I can only imagine the conversation after if we did this...lol
-
These claims should never be made...period...play the hand a little. (1 down)
-
Fixed the size. :)

Let's try to ignore my horrible play after trick 4 and pretend I was trying to setup this squeeze that I completely ruined...lol...I was guarding against that tricky 2nd K of ♣ that the opponents snuck into the deck... What is the name of it if anyone knows? Both opps guarding the same suit along with 1 card in their own. Make the law more strict regarding alerting X like these...people SHOULD learn what a TOx's definition is. My partner at our club has absolutely no clue what it really is. I have forgotten how many hands I am playing and I see his dummy...followed by me trying to explain that he shouldn't double their 1♠ opening with a 6232 hand and 13 HCP.
-
I was thinking along the lines of a set amount of time to make a call. You must wait x amount of time, but take no longer than y amount of time to make the call. (bidding). If used during play, this would be a little more tricky and would mostly fall on the defense in regards to information. I have never played a higher level event, but at club level it is common that an opponent will tank and come out with a play, where at times the other will have a very good idea about what they are thinking about.

One of the rules at our club is...never, ever ask something like..."Does this bid mean "insert your thoughts here". The only question allowed is..."What is x bid."

Four-suit Transfers vs. Invitational 2NT
RunemPard replied to tobycurtis's topic in Novice and Beginner Forum
Based on the assumption that you are playing MPs...I find that the use of minor transfers is a rarity. I am not saying that I think having a minor transfer is a bad thing, but I see absolutely no reason to use 2 bids to show them. Simply using 2♠ as a minor transfer works just fine for more. We lose the ability to super accept, and possibly wrong side diamonds, but to me saving 2N/3C for other uses is a gain. That is my opinion. One thing we do is play 2♠ as either a minor transfer or a NT invite. With a minimum partner will be 2NT, with a maximum partner will bid 3♣. This leaves 2NT open for whatever you wish. (Even a transfer to ♦) -
How do you feel about turn timers being used in major bridge events?
-
Not sure which is better to play..penalty or balancing for a minor. 3244, or a weaker 2245 distribution we may very well wish to push to 3 minor NV.
-
If partner means this as P/C...I will give them an angry look when they table 3/3 in the minors and 2 hearts when I have diamonds...IMO they can easily double asking us for minor if they wish to balance higher.

Now, later, or not at all?
RunemPard replied to sailoranch's topic in Intermediate and Advanced Bridge Discussion
Just thought I would mention that I want to continue because I feel fairly confident about making 7. If I can get 1 entry to partner I feel confident about making 8...(If partner has 2-3 clubs). If I cannot manage to make 8, I feel fairly confident that opponents can easily make 2H..(If partner is not sitting on a heart stack). At this point, I would rather double and leave it open for us. Note: I mostly bid considering MPs. At IMPs, this is only a matter of pushing them to a point where I feel we can possibly set their contract. 1H for them, I would rather push a little more. If MPs, I really do not want to be sitting at the table after explaining to partner why their 1H= is a top when most are playing 2H-1 or we are making a club contract. -

I would double... If partner replies 1♠, I will rebid 2♣ hoping to show 5/4 in minors and value. Why we want the opponents to buy this so cheap is beyond me. -
Yes, sorry...was working on figuring out how to change the bids.
-
Hello, I am horrible at calculating odds for contacts. If anyone could tell me how good the odds on this grand slam are w/o a spade lead I would be most grateful. Feel free to plan the play if you wish...we got the ♦7 led to us. 6N was obviously a preemptive move by GIB. ;)

100% South... Axx in partner's suit AKxxxx side suit... Let's slow down a little and give partner a chance IMO. 3♠ from me w/ intent of bidding 4♥ over a minor cue. Edit: Ok...maybe 80% South...only because North should understand that we must have something. Both minor As and the KQxxxx of spades. The 5 level does not seem that scary.

Hello, Just a topic regarding SAYC. Never really bothered to pay attention to this, but after noticing it, I thought I would ask here. Was playing a hand w/ a random BBO partner where the following auction occurred. 1♥-2♣ 2♦-2♥ In my mind, this would be a stronger hand looking to play at the game level or higher with ♥ support. The BBO SAYC says that this is the 10-11 variant. And... 1♥-2♣ 2♦-3♥ Would be a hand too good for a limit bid inviting to game. Possibly a nice 4 card support, useful singleton, or whatever. So...I suppose my main thing to ask is...Why is it the way it is? My thinking was that if we may have a slam hand, we should keep the bidding lower. If we are playing J2NT, then I most likely have a singleton to show and would want to do so at a lower level? Typically when I bid 2/1 w/ support to partner's major then I am highly interested in trying game, even more so at IMPs. Thanks for the help, Don

But again, this is just something I wanted to put out for thoughts. It does seem playable to me, but the gains/losses are of question for sure.
-
Thanks for the input. I am sure this can be made more playable as well. The opener is by no means required to sit around and relay. They are allowed to bid 2nd suit always when they know that my major is of not so great interest. The gain IMO comes when we have a fit with a splinter to show at a lower level. If my partner lacks heart support after 1S-2H, they have the ability to rebid their suit to show length, or the ability to show a 2nd suit. Typically if they are stronger, or have support to my potential suit, they would relay in most cases.

Sure thing! :) Add me on BBO and we can start playing. What time zone are you in? Edit: Message me on the name you use on BBO.. :P
