Matchpoint play decision
RunemPard replied to bd71's topic in Intermediate and Advanced Bridge Discussion
If we are expecting many to be playing game...maybe our best option is to not do the finesse and hope the others are relying on it. It seems like it shouldn't fail, but by avoiding the finesse we ensure the plus and possibly get a good score if it doesn't work for those in game? -
Is this a 3S pre-empt for you?
RunemPard replied to bd71's topic in Intermediate and Advanced Bridge Discussion
Since when did 6421s with working values and a very solid 6 card suit become awful? -
I cannot imagine the 3H bidder bidding 3H vulnerable with xx QJxxxxx Qxx x. It just seems that it must be something like xx QJxxxxx x KJx or even a void in diamonds. Even xx QJxxxxx Qx Kx is possible...but should we really play for that? I suppose an 8 card suit is also possible, but your guess is as good as mine. Maybe I am looking at it wrong..but I think a diamond void is impossible to make anyways.

Having trouble loading BBO...hopefully I can get on soon.

Playing with a random partner, they chose to pass for -1 and +200. I suppose they took my double as penalties... 5♦ is making easily. I found this board interesting, because playing 2/1, this double can be slightly more wide-ranging in values. Just need to check about what time I get home on Saturday. Should be good to play if that is the plan. :)

NV/V Playing 2/1 What would you choose in MP, TM, and IMPs? What hand are you expecting from partner? [hv=pc=n&n=s4hkt862dakt74cj2&d=n&v=0&b=1&a=1hp1n2sp3sdp?]266|200[/hv]

No, the opponents looked at our convention card. I was well aware of my mistake the second I placed my bid on the table.

Let me edit the post a little to make it more clear.

Sorry I will edit the post. 2H/2S shows 11-14 and 6 card suit.

Was playing a team match the other week when a hand like this came up... xx QJxxxx - JT98x Sitting NV/V I decided to try a weak 2♥ opening with this hand. The problem was, that we were playing multi with intermediate 2s (11-14, 6H). The bidding had gone... 2♥-(P)-4♥-(X) P-(5♦)-X-(P) 5♥-AP All bids were made in tempo. Directly after making my bid, I knew my mistake and tried to bid as if I had the hand I had shown. The opponents had said that if they had known that my hand was weak, they would have left the X in for penalty. The actual result was 5H-2, but I am more interested in rulings if I had decided to pass 5Dx for many back. Has there been any damage to the opponents in this case? How would you rule if the opponents had played 5Dx-? and wanted a ruling?

If I was the partner you were talking about I would be glad to play again, if George will have me of course. :P Have played in quite a few recently though. Each time I thought we got a little closer so maybe this is the lucky/skilled one? :)

Out of curiousity...what systems do you typically play/improve on and do you have any systems you hope to learn?
-
Why would you want to play no transfers?
RunemPard replied to twinkletob's topic in Novice and Beginner Forum
Just something from my club at least... Most use transfers and play a 15-17 NT, however, a surprising amount of players have no clue about the actual follow ups. Not many know what a super accept is, and some assume that after a transfer the only possible contract is that suit. The funny thing about this is that not knowing the follow ups pretty much makes all the reasons for transferring pointless. Auctions like... 1N-2♦ 2♥-2N/3N Just simply do not exist, or it is assumed that partner always wanted to play NT even in a 5/3 fit. -
It takes a lot of effort and time, but you can make a rather simple one with opening bids and 2nd round replies without too much effort. You just need to download one of the cards to your desktop from the desktop BBO version I believe. Edit the card or create a new one from there.

Not exactly what I mean't, but yes. I mean if partner is expecting a decent suit, the points may make up for that. :) I could be wrong...that wouldn't be surprising. We could miss game, but the preempt may pay off anyways.
-
I would open it in just about any system. If we are vulnerable and playing disciplined, I may choose 2♥- I like this as an intermediate 2♥ though if we are playing it.

Why oh why am I so horrible at bidding theory!
RunemPard replied to RunemPard's topic in Non-Natural System Discussion
2+♣ 11-19 (Balanced, range depending on 1NT range) 5+♣ 11-19 (Unbalanced normally, 16+ if 6 ♣s) 0+♣ Any typical 2♣ opening Bids of 1♣-1♦/1♥ show next higher. 1♠ relay to 1N. The others I am not certain yet. -
Hi! :) Before you read my ideas...I just want to add that bidding theory is not my strong point, but I feel like trying from time to time anyways. I greatly appreciate that all posters be respectful towards my ideas or any other posters opinions. I am looking for things I can do to improve on the system, not insults about my random ideas. I am working on putting together a system using a standard/strong 1♣ opening with transfer responses. I am open to using a 12-14, 14-16, or 15-17 NT, although my experience with a weak NT is limited. I have spent roughly an hour on the system so far, and have run into some bidding problems that need solutions. I will be posting new threads with different opening bids that I think need some suggestions. The first bid I want to get some opinions on is using a precision like 2♣ opening (MP/Teams). Using the 1♣ bid as unlimited and forcing, there needs to be a way to show hands with long clubs. The strong hands are shown by 1♣-1x-2♣. So, my idea for now is to use 2♣ as an (11)12-15 HCP hand with 6 ♣. The responses I had in mind are... 2♣: (11)12-15 (6♣) -2♦: Asking for 3cM - Possible WK 6+♦ or GF w/ ♣s -2♥: To play -2♠: To play -2N: Invite to 3NT -3♣: Preemptive -3♦: Splinter -3♥: Splinter -3♠: Splinter -3N: To play -4♣: Preemptive (or maybe just an invite) -4♦: RKC (not sure what else would fit here) -4♥: To play -4♠: To play -4N: Invite to 6NT -5♣: To play Other than using this bid to help with system bidding problems, I like the preemptive nature of the bid. Thoughts?

Thank you for being our better 1/4 diana. :)

"Bridge is for old people"
RunemPard replied to cargobeep's topic in General Bridge Discussion (not BBO-specific)
I think that Sweden has about 160-180 juniors (25-) registered with the bridge federation...and I am one of them. Seeing other juniors is not so common, and most of them play at the university cities. I started playing spades when I was 12. Only about 2 years ago did I try out bridge online for the first time. It was quite entertaining. I played rated rubber bridge on Pogo and managed to go 85%+ in my 1st 30 matches without a clue other than basic scoring and card sense. A large group of people to recruit from is the online spades community. (Even more so for the ACBL, as there are many American spades players.) It is actually quite easy for a spades player to become a bridge player, and there are a decent amount of 30-50 year old spades players. I would also like to mention about the weekdays thing. Sweden does this also, and it drives me mad. Currently I have no job, so this does not affect me. However, there is currently only one club playing on Sunday (an hour drive for us) to play at on the weekends. It is as if no clubs here in Sweden will play on Saturday or Sunday, and there are absolutely no events scheduled on Fridays. This to me is a huge factor as well. Regarding the restrictions...in Sweden there are almost no restrictions, I like this a lot, but it sure hasn't helped gain youth bridge players here. -
Just thought I would reply and say that I am no longer parding him. Thanks for the replies to me. Our last session got me to the point of suggesting that we no longer play together... ♠52 ♥A96 ♦AKQT5 ♣963 This was a 1♣ opening by him playing 5542. 1C-(1S)-P-(2S) 3D-P-?????????????????? ♠QJT9 ♥J8753 ♦8 ♣T74 I chose to give 3NT a try... Edit: Okay...I do not remember which major the opponents are bidding. If it was spades, I believe I was debating bidding 3H, 3N, or 4C after this 3D...which made no sense to me. I chose 3NT thinking that partner has a monster...

Debating teaching my girlfriend 2/1. We play at our local club where no one plays 2/1. I am sure my concerns are not that big of a deal, but... From your own experiences, will the field impact using a F1NT in a positive way, negative way, or about even. For example.. 1♥-1N 2♣-AP We end up in a 7 or 8 card fit. How often does this tend to be better at MP than playing 1N? (Assuming partner would normally pass 1NT of course.) The same may happen for... 1M-1N 2x-2M AP But I can see this going for some decent scores. So based on your experiences...does playing a F1NT where no one else does impact the results? And will the advantages we may gain from the system make it worth while if the F1NT is a negative? Thanks for answering my silly concerns, Don
