playing with very few trumps
spwdo replied to Free's topic in General Bridge Discussion (not BBO-specific)
Hi, the first day i played bridge , never saw the game before and at first tought one had to bid the number of tricks on a suit he had or something close to that :P . My partner bid Michaels 2♠ after opps 1♠ , all passed, he had no ♠, i had 1 ;) His comments were " there wont be system avaible where this woud be a natural bid, partner" to wich i replied "and these non-natural bids are commenly used in bridge?" to wich my partner said" welcome to the game , i hope u will enjoy it and get better soon" Marc -
Actually, your advocating adopting the EBU alert standard. From my persepctive, this is the worst of the bunch... Too many alerts are every bit as bad as too few alerts. Consider the following extreme examples: 1. 0% percent of all bids are alerted 2. 100% percent of all bids are alerted Regardless of which case you look at, the presence/absence of an alert convey's zero information. If the opponents open 1NT, I don't need an alert to tell me that their 2♣ advance is Stayman rather than Clubs. I would, however, like to know that their artificial 2♣ response is "Keri" rather than simple Stayman... The British have gone out of their way to create an alert system that is extremely simple to use. With this said and done, it fails to actually provide any useful information. Its as if they created an alert system in order to have an "alert system" rather than fulfilling a set of customer requirements. hi Richard , we agree to disagree :P, i feel and think that even stayman is alertable, no harm in that.Btw i hardly ever click on any bid when its alerted for asking an explanation, 99% its obviuos. We cant expect from a natural 2♣ opening in precision that they alert it if strong arteficial 2♣ are never alerted cause "everybody" knows it . Playing those rules there is ACBL where a lot of the common conventions are not alertable. Im not advocating any rules, i just give my opinion on the matter. This rule seems to work just fine for me and tourneys i hold and gives no room whatsoever to discussion.Fail to alert once=warning(+adjust if damage), fail to alert twice=adjust(even without damage) always done the thing for me, players know it and i can count on one hand the alert issues or problematic players(that often dont alert) in my tourneys Marc

Hi, Alert every conventional bid and explain bid(full disclosure) when opps ask seems to be a good rule for online tourney`s , that doesnt use specific rules(ACBL, IBF ,WBF).

hi, Thx for your comments, north here bid 2♣ as gameforce, then 2♦ south, then north signed off in 4♠, (we knew we excaped here cause first ♥ was ruffed!!). but we didnt seem to agree how it shoud have been bid bid it, i was in favour of jac nt wich i thought was sure to make things easier after partner first response. Not it matters but we were opps , here comes south hand[hv=s=skq1085hdkj1054ca97]133|100|[/hv]

Hi , Have done several tourneys where i play with another director, cause even 4 tables i cant handle alone when im playing, mainly when u need to do an adjust, when playing togheter with a td u can devide the work, when one is dummy adjusts are done. Basicully its manageble when A very small field B The players are informed u are playing C u make as td very clear whether or not u make adjustments Played once in a playing td tourney where no adjust where done untill we played the director himself and his partner played slow in a difficult hand, he adjusted to A++ when time run out, mind you at that time we had 2Avg- standing for unfinisched baords, needless to say i marked that td ♣. When tourneys are created just to please the td and players are let in to have a tourney, my feeling is that these tds give tds in general a bad name, but again giving enough information in info can help aldougb many players out there cant read the info in description cause they simply dont speak the language written in there. When they call for an adjust/non alert/sub needed problems start and tourney is wasted at least for some players. besides the outcome(result) tds can do a lot to provide plaesant for all tourneys, playing tds usualy ends up in at least a couple players beeing disappointed. Always knew u had it in you Friend:) P.s Have send Several mails to both Fred and Uday asking for your star my friend, hope after receiving it that u ll still play with us lesser gifted humans

Same for when a player is inside a tourney and says something when he logs in, immed u return greeting after wich u get a meesage xx is in tourney and private chat is disallowed. Maybe prevent the nick from beeing clickable.

Reducing the length of a tourney
spwdo replied to EarlPurple's topic in BBO Tournament Directors Forum
is normal that it is not or we woud see tds change for instance a 8 baord tourney into a 64 once it started. What u can do if tourney isnt to large is adjust a baord or 2 on every table to A==, lets say u got +- 20 tables, u can adjust 2 baords for each table in 1max2 minutes. -

Hi, i thought of a minor improvement also. Seeing lately several broadcast about vugraph playing details like " (Broadcast): so the play in that room is very very very...slow...apologize for this... (Broadcast): appeal just change 4 imps and a missunderstanding in the official scorecard for the other 26 imps (Broadcast): Concerning Board 20...we asked Bocchi and he replied that China's player discarded his !H then Bocchi's !H became good enough to permit him to discard from dummy...so the score is ... (Broadcast): 4!S just made :)) Looking at these broadcast, maybe it is a good thing to have a chatoption to vugraph spectators only. When someone is inside a tourney , there is no use for these broadcasts to be displayed. Im not talking about events to come(shedule) xx is playing in xx min in xx room. Marc

Hi Clubdias, Hope for your sake that u find your way to abbuse as well and try explain your case there, do not think there will be advantages trying to solve things here and i dont see if any support(if ppl feel this case needs support) from other forumusers woud do you much good neither. Personnal i feel/think that its normal that problematic users get after couple offenses a longer "think" period. But thats me , im not handling these cases. I always thought bbois very indulgent and give ppl a new chance fast.

To be fair, I have to say that most of the Vugraph commentators I have watched do post the link to the various players' Convention Cards. Posted but not aware whats in it, thats what i was talking about, again not overgeneralise( many do a great job). When i see colas been bet after what a certain bid can be and i look and i find it in a CC`s then it shoudnt be all that hard.
-
I wonder why commentators have not opend a link to the CC cards from players so they woudnt have to guess all the time what can be this /that bid, seems it woud be somuch easier if they did that so they woudnt have to do small talk or bet for cola`s. When i watch european football commentated by profesionals they also say a goal has been made, but they take give us background, know what they are talking about. i have seen many good commentators(vugraph) but sometimes i wish i coud turn it off. Maybe , i dont know if its possible, but is so we might think of giving some revenue(money) for the best commentators out there and take things towards an expert level. Again, many are already very good and they comment for all, its a gift or u have to do efforts to become good at that to be sure u are not commenting only for the happy few that only find hands interested when there is something "special" going on. Yes , most know about multi 2!D, but seeing someone explain that perfectly is imo better then talking about red sox, isnt a good colour for sox anyways

Some dont, they hate everybody equal...

maybe a "friends kib only button" and ask xx dollars for others :D Btw seriuosly , i think when we start booting unwanted kibs to the lobby we woud see a lot of fights.problems, imagine u are following a friend who happens to play in a tourney against a enemie and u get booted to the lobby, dont think many will apreciate that

Another one to try...

Hi ben, I read those hands with amusement, like everything i think all things have to grow. i voted for 1 -
I think as a TD they should be able to kick someone out of their tourney and as for the statement "and get away with it" I am not sure in what context that should be taken. Why on earth should someone run a tourney (sometimes quite hardwork) for strangers and be expected to put up with some pompous crap (some of the players can be complete jerks, rude etc etc ) and not have the right to boot them.... I think the people high on the ladder have got it right :() Hi Wayne &co, What free was talking about wasnt a td who booted someone that violated tourneyrules, Free`s example came from a issue where a td booted a pair for a system they played. In rules it was allowed, in the game itself nomore and immded boot. To give another example, i once was booted from a td when i used tournamentchat(well it ws on, someone asked the time, i asnwered and found myself in the lobby with what i called abusive talk(in private to me) from that td to go along with the boot) . Those are things Free is talking about that a td can violate BBO`s rules and can get away with it. No one (sane) will argue the need for a td to have the option to boot someone who is messing up a tourney but that all has to go i think in a fair way, i ve booted my fair chair :) off ppl also in my tourneys, all i hope where when all other communication failed and i always gave them a advice to seek council with a yellow before the lobby is used to start screaming wich nobody will benefit from. I must add to this that free`s high on the ladder expression was bad choice of words, its hard for them to police every tourney but howeever a more actif scan of for instance new tds woud be imo a good step, we seen enough i think of the playing /non adjusting td that is unaware of any other things besides the create tourney button in order to play a free tourney themselves. yes correct diagram, wanted to show diagram wat was left when claim ocured, then i callled td , but north played high spade, partner played a low spade, north played king spade, partner followed suit(thats the two cards i mistakenly called tricks) and td showed , td adjusted to make(off course to make instaed of +1) based upon the finesse/endplay not taking into consideration my partner can easely have club king and state thats imposible for me to have !Dqueen. So a claim for 5, got 4 where my point is coud be easely been 3, or 2 if i hold !Dqueen+!Cking(ok far fetched but poss.) but my partner can have !Cking so to me/rule 70 it shoud be adjusted to -1 , if nomore cards were played after the claim to -2 perhaps Thx Ben, learned a couple of things about posting hands and so on, sorry made it more difficult on you then needed. Regards Marc

Hi trying again, thx Ben for keeping me going :) correct rulling is?

Hi, To me when the claim came there were several possibiltys that the contratc coud go down. 1.partner had for instance only S + clubs left (down 2) 2.partner held one Club and played it to me i still have rest of clubs (down 2) 3.i hold D queen(single or with X) and club king (down 2) 4.opps didnt state a line of play so play from top? What happend here wasnt good play, cause declarer had no idea how many !S were played , he claimed all tricks (+1) where he needed all the prev.poss .holdings not to be the case, and he woud need that endplay on !D , doesnt that all sound too much for someone that has only 12 spades in a deck or 13 and assumes a good split, doesnt take into consideration that there where clubs left. If i see only one D in dummy why woud i play the queen , giving away that i hold also the ace and force them to think of playing another line where now north after A diamond lead from partner just play low and is sure to make the trick, all we needed therefore was taking trumps out of dummy wich i did even when holding A10 when only queen H was left, so i gave away a trick to not let dummy ruff a !D. Maybe stupid from me but that came to mind at that time i was to lead after taking trick with !D ace in trick 4, sorry to say but opps are at good in counting, endplaying, finessing, visualising a hand as me(more luck then skill to be fair). Rule 70 is clear on claims , i see as td no justification in what is there, only what can be there, partner and me havent showed out in minor so any claim with a S loser is over and out for declarer imo

implement the clock and DONT show the clock to players only tds have access. How often we see someone blinking red/back/red/back and so on , returning finally and after the slitest hesitation from opps saying : "Time !!!! opps "when they see td arrives so they try have a advantage if adjust for slowplay is given
