Strong two-suiters responding to a t/o double
Edmunte1 replied to helene_t's topic in Expert-Class Bridge
I prefer using a jump cue-bid here as asking for stopper, showing a good long minor (AKxxxxx will do). Then 2♥ followed by 3♥ shows both minors, obviously GF. With spades and strong i have to start with 2♥ followed by spade fit. And in my methods 2♠ response on 2♥ shows a minimum hand -
I also think that double is OK, in the passout seat, partner, with length in hearts may easily pass with 13-14 hcp. Also, You should happy that East was asleep and didn't preempt. Possible bidding after 2♥: dbl - 4♦ (GF with ♦ playing lebensohl) 4♥ - 4♠ (cues) 5♣-6♣ (k♣ and 2 top honours in trumps) 6♦-pass Also possible after 4♠ to use exclusion 5♥, as Ben sugested

Agree with Free. Start with 1♠. Now after double 3♠ is mandatory
-
My 7 examples were average hands (14-15 with singleton ♦, 16-17 with doubleton), and 5♣ is below average for them. For weaker hands the probability of making is lower. I think 25% is not a bad estimation

4♣ for me. An important thing for a partnership is to define a minim/maximum on certain actions. Let's suppose that a 11 hcp with singleton diamond or a 13 hcp with doubleton in diamonds are minimums for double. We will consider that a king over this minimum is an average double (and partener should be aware of that). Now let's consider some typical average hands for partner: a) ♠AKxx ♥AKxx ♦x ♣xxxx - 4♣ is the limit :) ♠AQxx ♥Axxxx ♦x ♣Axx - 5♣ c) ♠KQxx ♥KQxxx ♦x ♣AQx - 4♣ d)AKJx AKxx xx Qxx - 4♣ e)Axxx AKxx xx Axx -5♣ f)KQxx AKxx xx AQx -4♣ g)Axxx Kxxx Ax AQx - 5♣ Some remarks: - partener should have ♠A or not wasted points in spades - partner should have A or Q in trumps and at least 3 cards -♥Q is often an unimportant card (if partener has only the king, the finesse works) - partner can easily be in a GOSH double with such a long suit in our hand - the win/loss report doesn't favour bidding the game. Suppose that 5♣ has 25% chance of success (versus a minimum/average double), then: - win: 0.25 x 10 IMP(600-150) =2.5 - loss: 0.75 x 6 IMP(130+100) =4.5 ( I didn't take in consideration that sometimes you'll get doubled and sometimes you'll go down in 4♣ also, so the loss could be 400, 330, 100) - sometimes you have to pay the preempts. I think is more frequent the case when a preempt pushes you into wrong contract or too high, than when you miss a game. - I don't feel any regrets any regrets when partner will put down a perfect Axxx Ajxx x Axxx. That's bridge, the matter is to win more frequent , not to win THIS board.

Pard's problem hand last night.

Vox populi, vox dei :P -
Useful board. I think using serious 3NT here should be a matter of trumps quality and controls. So bypassing 3NT should mean: i have bad trumps (good trumps means 2 out of 3 top honours) or i don't have enough controls (max 3).

I think 3!d shows extras, something around 14+-17, 5-4 or 6-4 but it's not forcing. I would have started with a double, then 3♦ with a stronger hand.

One question: 2♥ rebid promises 5♦ or any 5 card minor? If any, can you find out which one ?
-
Pass, just not enough to compete

Bid this in your favourite system
Edmunte1 replied to effervesce's topic in Non-Natural System Discussion
1♦ ---- 1♥ 2♣(1)-- 4♣(2) 4♥(3)---4♠(3) 6♣ (1) natural 5+♦+4+♣, 11-21 (2) shape invitation, max 8 hcp (3) cue-bids -
4♥ in IMP's and MP's. In IMP's i think it's a 40%+ chance to make it. In MP's i think that over 70% of the room will bid it (the other posts confirm it B) ), so you will get a bad score if 4♥ makes

My choice is between 3♦ and pass, and i'll choose 3♦. I don't like double

How to co-operat with partner's jump reverse?
Edmunte1 replied to bid_better's topic in Expert-Class Bridge
As i see South hand contains some pluses and minuses: Pluses: -♣Q and especially 4th trump are great, allowing us to ruff 4th spade -♥A especially not in partner's singleton is good Minuses: - 3rd spade, if partner doesn't have AKQ♠ we will have a late loser in this suit, ans more, no chance to escape of it. -♦Q looks preety wasted, but it could do some good , especially if partener has something like a stiff king in diamonds So i think 4♣ is the right bid after 3♣ GF (if you play it this way), and 4♥ on 4♦. I also think 1♣ opening was ok -
I play x= exactly 4♥ and 4♠. I also played x=4+♥, 1♥=4+♠, 1♠=8+ hcp, no 4M, which works well too
-
1♥ my choice. 4♥ might put some pressure and make opps take the wrong road, so it deserves some credit

reverse or t/o X?

Balance with this hand?
Edmunte1 replied to awm's topic in General Bridge Discussion (not BBO-specific)
Double, then pass, even if we will be in a 4-2 ♥ fit. That's life, we don't get perfect hands all the time -
Shapely Hand but only one 1st rd control
Edmunte1 replied to gingolia's topic in Interesting Bridge Hands
6♥, i don't care too much if i'm going down and 6♣ was also down one in IMP's, losing 4 IMP's . But it will be a much bigger lost if either 6♣ or 6♥ makes -
I like 5NT, pick a slam, no grand intentions (all the time a Queen is missing :) ). I'll corect 6♣ in 6♦
-
You cannot tell that someone is Walsh expert . 1♠ call just shows 5+ clubs and 4 spades. If you don't want to wrongside 1nt with xx in ♥ don't play Walsh.
-
1♦ followed by 1nt showing 10-11 in my methods. If partner responds 1nt i'll pass. I think 2nt is an overbid, no suits, no controls.
-
4♥, 4♦ is a little bit opthimistic, and i'm not today

How can you reach 7H?
