1NT - this is one bid hand, no good second call
-
Playing in a strong MP's tournament, you hold in the first seat:[hv=d=s&v=n&s=saq632hk53dj872cq]133|100|Scoring: MP[/hv] and bidding goes: S -- W -- N -- E p - 3♣-- p-- p ? Do you feel sorry that you didn't open in the first place? Would you balance now?
-
4♦, i don't like 800's, is almost like they reached slam. 4♦ puts enough pressure
-
I was expecting more votes and comments. Here is the full deal:[hv=n=sa109xxhxdkjxxca10x&w=sjxxxhkjxxxxdxxcx&e=sxh109dq109xxcqjxxx&s=skqxhaqxxdaxck98x]399|300|[/hv] At the table my lead was ♣Q, end game. After tournament me and my partner discussed the board. I had the feeling that it wasn't a good time for an offensive lead, having length and 3 level controls on 2 suits. It increases the chance that partner controls hearts, so a defensive lead seems much better. My partner added that weak players tend to bid 4NT on hcp, not on source of tricks.
-
I fully agree with Mike. 2♠, trying to find the right strain. The plan is to bid afterwards 3♦ then 4♥
-
I use the jump to three level in other minor as a good 6 card suit and a limited hand, something like 6-8(9) hcp. So 3♣ on first and probably 3♦ on second will be my choices
-
5♥ - 2 possible offensive tricks
-
Playing in a pairs tournament against not strong opposition, sitting South you hold: [hv=d=e&v=n&s=s8h109dq10952cqj632]133|100|Scoring: MP[/hv] and bidding goes: West East ----- 1♠ 4NT(1) 5♥(2) 6♠ All pass (1) RKCB in♠ (2) 2KC, no Q♠ What's your choice and why?
-
I would have bid 2♥. 4♥ is now obvious. Partner should have very good ♥'s and 2 outside usefull honours, so 4♥ is definitely a worthy try

Fourth seat opening
Edmunte1 replied to firmit's topic in General Bridge Discussion (not BBO-specific)
-Drury works fine in 3rd and 4th seat too. It's ok to open light (10+) in 4th seat knowing that points are pretty equally divided between lines. - 1nt is OK, playing it as semiforcing. If partner passes with a minimum balanced hand, you won't make game - Another ideea is to play 2♦ as a good passed hand, and denying fit and 1nt as a weak bid -
Too weak for 1NT, but could work as a preempt for their major part score. I don't have intermediattes at all, almost only controls. I will bid 1♦ tghough, encouraging partener to open the bidding. I won't like to bid after 1♣-1♥-1NT for example

P open 2nt pass or transfer?
Edmunte1 replied to jillybean's topic in Intermediate and Advanced Bridge Discussion
My partner opened 2NT (20-22), and i passed. When the full holding proved to be [hv=n=st9876h972d93cqt2&s=sakxhaxdakxxckjxx]133|200|[/hv] my partner left telling me if i ever heard about transfers. Of course 2NT went down one when hearts proved to be 5-3. It's easy to make comments on particular cases. The important think is what's happening in most of the cases, and my opinion is you should transfer. Sometimes 3♠ will make and 2NT no, and sometimes, when partner has good fit and good controls 4♠ will make. So just passing 2NT is usually worse than transfering. And you should be content with that. Sometimes some methods work, other times not, important is the frequency of success. -
-I'll pass if double is for penality. I expect partner to have 2 trump tricks. If 4♠ makes, 5♥ probably will go down 2. I don't want to change -590 in -500, and overule partner. -If double shows just extra values and asks partner to make a choice, the obvious choice is 5♥ I play double in this position for penality.
-
I'll bid 4♠, cue, my partner will make first cue-bid, first or second round, if i want to make a scientific bid. Otherwise i'll take a poker 4nt bid
-
I'll start with 3♦. This primarily is for 3NT. Now suppose parter bids: a] 3NT - most often. I'll bid 4♣ saving some space, and showing slam interest. Now over partner's 4♦ cue i'll bid 4♠ showing second round cue in ♠ (with first cue i would have bid 4♠ directly over 3nt).This bids denies ♥ control. If partner bids 4♥, denying ♦ control, i'll bid 5♣ b] partner bids 3♠ showing doubt about ♠ stopper. I'll bid probably 6♣ c] partner bids 3♥. This should show Hxx(AK?). Now i'll splinter 4♠, transmiting the message about missing ♥ control. Anyway, an important thing, when clubs are trumps is better to play Turbo instead of RKCB (4nt showing an even number of KC, bypassing it an odd number)
-
I'll play ♠ to Q, ruff a ♣ (high if trumps were 4-1), cash trumps, playing for ♣-33, or Jx in ♣, or a squeeze ♣-♦. Probably one of these should work if opps stopped playing trumps

The art of balancing
Edmunte1 replied to Edmunte1's topic in General Bridge Discussion (not BBO-specific)
Here was the full hand: [hv=d=n&v=b&n=sqxhdakq109xxcaj10x&w=sa10xhajxdjxxcxxxx&e=sjxxxhkqxxxxxdckx&s=sk9xxh109xdxxxcqxx]399|300|Scoring: IMP[/hv] I was south, my partener's choice was 3NT, beting for my ♥stopper. East doubled, showing a hand able to play 4♥, with some defense, me and West passed, and my p redoubled showing doubt (probably no ♥ stopper). I bid 4♦, all passed. At other table our opponents played 5♦ doubled =-750. Double dummy our opponens are cold for 5♥ -
After 2♥ weak, i play -3♥ either one suited minor, asking for stopper or strong with 5-5+minors -4m=5m+5OM can be passed (around 4 losers) -4♥=very strong 2 suiter 5+♠+5minor -4NT=minors, weaker than 3♥, usually 6-5

minor suit bidding
Edmunte1 replied to sheilafran's topic in General Bridge Discussion (not BBO-specific)
There are 2 majors schools here 1) 1♦ openers, with the advantage of the easy 2♣ rebid, also managing better in some competitional sequences: 1♦-(1M)-DBL-(pas/2M). The biggest drawback of this treatment is that partner will take you more often for 5♦+4♣, and sometimes you will land in a 4-2 fit (or 4-3 instead of 5-2/5-3) 2)1♣ openers, with the continuations -bidding 2♦ over 1♦ and showing an unbalanced hand -bidding 1NT over 1♥, and then 3♦ after a forcing relay from partner -bidding 2♠ over 1♠ and having some method to question about the nature of fit -
Playing in a strong team match, you're dealer, all vulnerable, and you pick ♠Qx ♥--- ♦AKQ109xx ♣AJ10x and biding goes 1♦ - (3♥)-pass-(pass) ? Your choice?

How many spades to bid
Edmunte1 replied to DWM's topic in Intermediate and Advanced Bridge Discussion
I would have opened 3♠ in red, not enough tricks for 4♠. 3♠ takes a lot of bidding space, so opps have already a hard time usually. The bigest problem with 4♠ is that it takes too much space, and it will be often the final contract (doubled or no). Missing 2 spade honours, the penality will be more frequent -
Which is weaker bid?
Edmunte1 replied to adhoc3's topic in General Bridge Discussion (not BBO-specific)
Opponents bid one of the suits i doubled for take out, so my second double is penality oriented. So i'll pass in one of ours 7 card fits, at the lowest level -
First pass was OK. 3♣ is ok now, as Justin pointed out the weak hand should play the board with his long suit as trumps.
-
3♥ then 4♣. A direct 4♣ could be intrepreted as having ♦ accept. I want to keep the bidding low for gathering more information.
-
I'll take 4♠, safest bid
