competition after p opens weak 2
pooltuna replied to frouu's topic in Intermediate and Advanced Bridge Discussion
The difference between 3♠ and 4♥ is the former puts us in a forcing pass auction and lets partner know it really is our hand. With 4♥ he is still the seaman and we are still the captain. Whether or not this knowledge actually helps is far from certain as I am unwilling to go past 4♥ and Xing everything in sight rates to be our best choice. -
Of course you can double just with 18+ HCPS and 4351 hands. But in this case you must put nearly all other hands besides freaks into pass. I think that it is much more useful to give double the meaning: I like to defend. This may be based on HCPS or on flat distribution or whatever. This is less accurate then your definition but makes the pass much better defined. No it doesn't. For you double = wants to defend, pass = doesn't want to defend. For me double = extra values (like 16+ not 18+), pass = minimum. I don't think we have proven either is better defined than the other. In any case what does it matter, if pass is better defined one way then double is better defined the other way. Really all I object to is you calling partner's pass ridiculous. To me it's absolutely normal. to be clear, are we talking about the player who made the initial 1♦ bid? I would object to anyone saying he has to X and certainly would object to playing such (IMO ridiculous) agreement.

What is AFI ? The letter I is 5 letters starting with Id hopefully your imagination can fill in the rest.

Your only failure was not to provide an AFI warning in the original post

competition after p opens weak 2

this is where my vote fits -
That's easy to say as long as your on it (But I realize you mean you are just happy with the process :) ) and don't have to pay attention to the GCC

I would expect a 2♦ rebid to show six on this auction ( or maybe a really good 5) and having already limited my hand and shown a [probably good] ♥ stopper with 1NT a three ♦ raise is protection against partner having to bid 2♦ with a nearly 3♦ raise.
-
I suspect they open 1NT with 5 card majors and so the 3NT rebid shows 18 or 19 and a 5 card major
-
Having thought about it a little, does anyone like 2♥ with this hand if the auction goes 1♦ (1♥) 1NT (p) 2♦ (p) ? That seems like a good bid. I'm not sure what a 2♥ call is intended to show unless it is meant to expose a psyche

absolutely right there is no way partner could have[hv=s=sxhkxxxxxdxxxcxxx]133|100|[/hv] so game is completely out of reach <sarcasm off> pooltuna my old friend: this was my contention: My hand got worse after RHO opened 1S. To rephrase, suppose these two different scenarios: a. RHO opened 1H b. RHO opened 1S In which case is this hand stronger? Why? Why not? I think my hand is clearly better if RHO opens 1H than 1S. Do you disagree? clearly a 1♥ opening is better for this hand overall but even a 1♠ opening does not make this a hopeless cause as Justin seems to think else why is he passing with = and favorable vulnerabilty.

Pretty much that simple. Need to evaluate your hand in context of playing in ♥. IMV that means passing 2♥
-
what is the difference between bidding 3♠, 4♠,5♠, X and then 4♠, X and then 5♠
-
if I did my guesstimate right, you are around 34% to hold 2 of {A♥, K♠,A♣} which is a lot to give up by going unilateral and jumping to game.
-
bid 3♣ planning on bidding 4♠ over 3NT
-
over 1♦ - (1♥) - Pass - (Pass) instead of pass I bid 1NT over 1♦ - (1♥) - Pass - (Pass) 2♦ - (Pass) - ? I try 3♦
-
This is my Touc on it too. I wouldn't mind Xing so much, but I am not sure I really want partner to jump to 6♥ in a contested auction Are you serious? I would be delighted if partner jumped to 6H, because it will make. I have great support - 2 Aces and a void! great support is not the same as having the hand you said you did and 6♥ is often based on a lot of guesswork on his part and expecting his partner to actually hold high cards
-
I think it's wrong to call partner's 2♦ a "nonforcing bid." Partner is bidding despite your lack of action earlier, which means you could have 0HCP in your hand. Obviously that's unlikely in the context of this auction, but you still have 2 aces (one of which is Ax in partner's suit) more than you promised already. That's a HUGE hand and passing is very likely going to result in missing game. I disagree that he is limited to either 6♦ or 14 HCP. With that said, I would have overcalled 1NT originally and raised 2♦ to 3 if partner rebid his ♦. I vote with the party hat

Not to be a troll or anything, but has the fact that two women have said there is some grain of truth in Fluffy's statement made you reconsider? Perhaps you're being way too sensitive? I'm positive Fluffy wasn't trying to offend anyone. Vampyr was probably just being a WIKI LOC
-
Looks like your choices are 3♥, 5♣, or 6♣. What is peculiar is RHO's pass. i.e. no ♥ support. This makes partner a favorite to hold 4+ ♥ and 4+♣. since it is MP I will probably try 3♥

Walk the dog or blast it?

you definitely want to put them on last guess and 5♦ does that. -
It will probably get you the best defense for the hand. That is however not the same as setting the contract so IMO probably questionable at MP but have to do the math for IMPS
-
1) I probably would have tried 3♦ which for me is a LR 2) Now I pass and try to beat it.
