  1. There is actually a second, backhanded reason to pass. To keep the opponents from reaching a cold ♠ game. Given the colors and scoring maybe E did not consider the requirement changes for a "weak 2" at these colors and scoring. Why risk waking them up.
  2. Not sure if Lightners fall under general bridge knowledge or require an alert. Anyone not taking the safety play of low to the T♦ when their RHO plays the 9 and is my partner deserves my irritation whether it works or not, if he is my opponent he only gets a smirk :)
  3. Why not? Considering the colors and the scoring partner better have 9 near certain tricks in his hand!
  4. turn the Q♠->Q♥ and I might raise but I only have 1 potential trick and need 2
  5. q1)pass q2)X and pass over 3♣ q3)no but I open all 11 point hands. Playing with a pickup I would pass q4)if partner is looking alert I would call 3♠ suggesting 3NT with a ♥ stopper ...this can't show more than 4 or you would have called 1♠/1♥ it also needs to show ♦ tolerance. Not sure I understand the edit. If RHO bid 3♥ over 1♦ then this is an auto -X assuming you are playing them this high and a penalty X otherwise.
  6. mostly I blame North for passing a TOX with a 9 card major suit fit
  7. Basically the question being asked looks like a do you have extras for your bidding rather than a trump quality ask. You could have checked trump quality in each case with RKC.
  8. abstain since I don't agree with any of the choices
  9. The bidding error was even simpler and happened even sooner in the auction....I agreed to play this system was the bidding error.
  10. 1) partner apparently has significant ♥ values and I have sufficient defense for my pitiful 2♣ overcall, so I pass. 2) Why should I go down when they probably will as well....pass
  11. Clearly you have not played enough ♣ contracts
  12. 5♠ for me altho I do have sympathy for a 6♠ call. I am restrained by playing with too many pickups who assume everyone uses NFB. :)
  13. yep unless you can get away with a 2♦ call. :)
  14. Since I didn't bid the opponents cards I can only speculate on why they made the calls. And certainly the X is uncalled for except in a Lightner sense. Maybe the opp was worried about being subjected to a strip squeeze and forced to lead from his diamond holding ?!?
  15. A Lightner double does not require the doubler to have a void. The double merely requests an unusual lead. In this case opener's first bid suit ♦s.
  16. good thing your "weirding module" was non functional. BTW what is your handle ...Vesuvius or Aetna? :) I occasionally use Santorini :)
  17. with the J♣ opening lead no one has bothered to reflect about West's double. It was certainly beneficial to our side as the opps were in effect giving us 1090(not to mention the additional headaches associated with deciding what to do over 7♣. While partner did reflect on the double he was clearly mystified by it. Are you mystified by it? Does the name Lightner ring a bell? So why was the opening lead a ♣? Nevertheless partner blithely drew 2 more rounds of trumps and played the A♦ when his RHO produced the 9. I am still relieved that my "wierding module" is non functional otherwise I am sure my monitor would have been in a thousand pieces when I spoke the killing words " YOU BLITHERING F------ I----" before partner's LHO discarded :)
  18. Q1 ) was there no alert on the 4♦ call or did 4♦s show ♠? If 4♦ was ♦ I would have Xed as we rate to be looking at 3 or 4 down. Over 4♠ I would try 5♥. A double has the advantage of alerting your partner that it is your hand 4♥ on this auction does not even create a FP option over 4♠ IMO
  19. DEALER EAST VUL NS Scoring IMP pairs AUCTION P 1♦ P 1♥ X XX 2♣ 2♦ 3♣ 4♣ X 4♥ 5♣ 6♥ X all pass [hv=n=sq9hqt632dat83ca8&s=sak8hakj9dq76542c]133|200|[/hv] Opening lead was J♣ first 3 tricks were as follows: T1 J♣ 2♦ 5♣ A♣ T2 8♣ 4♣ 9♥ 3♣ T3 J♥ 4♥ 2♥ 5♥ You may not be aware of it but your play to the first 3 tricks has already piqued partner mildly. Which and why? What further disasterous play can you make to really blow his stack?
