When you have a double fit...
JLOL replied to Hanoi5's topic in General Bridge Discussion (not BBO-specific)
my bad. I would always choose my stronger fit even though there are definitely hands where the weaker one plays better. -
1) This is not how haspel gave me the auction, not sure if you changed the auction on purpose or haspel gave it wrong. I would bid 5N with the given auction. 2) 6C seems clear, the 44 fit will be better and it might protect partners DK. 3) I'm sure this will be considered weird but I like passing with this. my goal is to describe my hand best by later bidding hearts rather than to penalize.

Ok, I'll bite. Why? With 65 you can often start with the 6 then bid the 5. With 56 you can't do that so you always have to show the suits immediately. Thus partner is more likely to have 6 of the lower ranking suit. Also, if the auction gets competitive or it's a slam hand it's nice for partner to be able to take inference from you bidding one of them (in this case the higher one), that you have more of that suit than the lower suit. If you might be equal to bid the higher suit he can never really take inferences from that. Also, if the 2 suited hand is strong with 65 they will be able to bid the higher suit when you bid the lower suit (ie 1S 2N p 3C p 3D) and be at a lower level. There are 2 general principles which this also follows. 1) Make the cheapest bid whenever possible. 2) Don't have 2 bids to show the same hand. -
Biggest event in the history of bridge

I've done ok in them and I've only ever used my laptop...I can only assume that, if I too used a desktop, I would own you both. Ive used a laptop for the first 20 so far lol. -
I think you underestimate the chance we beat 4S, and overestimate the cost of them making 4SX.

exception to the "rule"?

4H -
I would just bid 2N with myself.

Because you have a great hand which you haven't shown yet. This is how I view bidding: 4H: We may miss a slam, but it's more important to try to shut them out of either 4S or 5C if its profitable. X: Darn, we lost our attempt to shut them out. Now we double to say we had the goods, we expected to make 4H, and we have good defense. We might not beat them, but we have to double. Partner will be able to bid 5H sometimes, but will usually pass. If you like bidding 4H (I do), you cannot do it with the intent of passing! Your hand is awesome! They are probably down! 5H will make if partner bids it! Really this is an every day situation that people get wrong all the time. Sometimes in bridge you only double with 3 trump tricks and an ace. But in situations like this where you have jammed them you must be doubling light, because they are bidding 4S light. I mean really can you imagine the guy sitting with QJxxxxx x Axx Kx shrugging and bidding 4S, and LOLing when the dummy hits with nothing and he goes -150 into your game. This is way more likely than the guy being 74 in the blacks and wrapping it up. Admittedly its different when RHO bids 4S but LHO can still have a yarb and you are probably still beating them. Sorry if this is harsh but bidding 4H and passing is beyond terrible.

Hammans rule?! OK 3S but 3N must at least be reasonable.

Always bid the lower. -
Is there only one bid with this hand?
JLOL replied to Hanoi5's topic in General Bridge Discussion (not BBO-specific)
Agree with obv t/o X -
When you bid 4H you are committing yourself to doubling. If you don't feel comfortable with that, don't bid 4H.
-
With a stiff bid game opp a 4 card LR. Very good rule.
-
It seems to me like 4S as a cuebid is almost never going to be useful, but 4S with a good 8 card suit (or GREAT 7 card suit) is likely to gain. However, bidding 5m natural seems even less likely to be useful than a cuebid since it's so less often that you'd want to pull 4major to do it.
-
Matt, if we hav a 70 spade fit and a 62 heart fit we are very likely better in spades on hands like this. Partner's spade length doesn't really matter. For the same reason we would play spades if our red suits were reversed, which is what jdonn was alluding too.

Josh Donn, junior world champ.

Jdonn, You are just used to playing with GIB so you always hog the dummy ;)

Mark, It makes more sense to me to have an 11-15 range for 2 and a 16-17 range for 3 than an 11-14 range for 2 and a 15-17 range for 3. Add to this that: 1) I don't think this is a good 15, Jx Jx offsets the good, and we only have 6 diamonds rather than 7. 2) Not all hands with 11 would be opened with 1D. 3) Some 18 counts are in range for a 3D rebid. The fact that it's debatable whether to rebid 2 or 3 (I would not have, though you probably would not have, for the opposite reason) is a good argument for opening 1N.
-
?! Gnome, I don't think you tend to appreciate how special good 7 card suits are. They should be loved and cherished and rebid. When you are playing in a different fit when you have a good 7 card suit it is always a very sad thing, especially at the partscore level. The question to me is whether to rebid 2S or 3S. I would just bid 2.
-
Maybe I am on another planet but if I opened 1D I would rebid 2D (which is why I don't open 1D). Also I don't see how bidding 3N with 8 and a doubleton diamond over a 3D rebid is an overbid.
-
1S I guess.
-
4S would be to play, not sure what this 5D bid is supposed to be, I would bid 5H.
