  1. One pair made a potential infraction (MI). The director rules in their favor (misbid, no MI) without apparent evidences. An appeal committee is summoned. One of the three members is a mother of one player from the "offending" pair. What do you think about that? What should be done with the appeal? What should be done with the director?
  2. In my view, 3♠ is a cuebid with two possible meanings: 1) choice of games with nonvulnerable values in spades (say: AQx, AJT, AKx) and problems in minor(s) 2) megamaximum for hearts, trying for slam (say: Axx Kx Axxx xxxx)
  3. Because location of major fits (from the right side) is much more important than trying to get them on level one (which happens never or very rarely). Especially if you have the "18-19 balanced" hand pulled out into some other opening (2♣, 2♦ or 1♣). You can describe balanced hands pretty well even if you start with a pass (following with the double or something else), no matter of strength. Besides that, the transfer to major is by agreement usually 5-carder (giving opponents a chance to play in a suit where we have 4 cards). All in all, something like this: Pass = weak, strong balanced or intermediate balanced with 4M XX = TRF, 5+♥ 1♥= TRF, 5+♠ 1♠ = TRF, no 4M, 7-10, usually balanced 1NT= TRF, 5+♣ 2♣ = TRF, diamond raise, 8+ 2♦ = diamond raise, 0-7 2M = 6M, 8-10, good suit 2NT = mixed raise or any 10-13 splinter (or something like that) 3♣ = FSJ 3♦ = preemptive raise
  4. My goulash system is: Pass: weak or balanced hand up to 17 1suit: 5+ cards, ~13+, F1 1NT: (4441) ~15+ 2suit: 6+ cards, ~8-12 2NT: 18+ balanced 3♣: 5♣5any, GF 3♦: 5♦5♥, GF 3♥: 5♥5♠, GF 3♠: 5♠5♦, GF 3NT: specific ace ask 4suit: to play
  5. IMP. All white. ♠- ♥QJ8 ♦K8xx ♣KJT9xx 1♠ 1NT 2♥ ? What do you bid? What would you bid being vulnerable?
  6. Just ask EW what bid would have been different if they did know 2♦ is "majors, 0-10" and why. And why didn't they ask for clarification of the "majors, destructive" sentence if they had a tough borderline call. If you have any authority and EW have any experience, this question should solve your "case" automatically, believe me. :D
  7. Director should show effort to determine the facts, but anyway, it is pretty obvious what happened here. West bid 2NT. Why? - He had a club stopper, hoped the diamonds will run and expected a raise with 9-10 points. And even if partner interprets 2NT as some kind of two-suiter, he has something like that. East bid 3♠. Why? - He had 5 spades, some values, but not enough to bid game alone. If partner had a superfit then he surely expected to be raised. North doubled. Why? - He wanted to show a maximal hand. West passed 3NTx in disbelief. Why? - Hard to tell. Probalbly felt partner made some confusion in bidding (as example: felt 3♠ was forcing). In any case, east had the hand he has already shown (some 6-8 points) so there was NO EXTRA UI. Even the mathematical expectation of his HCP (40-28)/2=6 is in the range. West run to 4♦. Why? - Because if his line has at most 22 (14+8) HCP, playing 3NTx with a weak long suit and just one vulnerable stopper is madness, not bridge. Running to a statistically safer spot is THE ONLY LOGICAL ALTERNATIVE! So, according to: a ) authorised informations, and b ) simple bridge logic it is possible to deduce 4♦ is a perfectly legal contract although East should be warned to bid in properly manner. The director's and AC's decision are pure horror, for many reasons (of course a weighted score is in order, if UI's were estabilished). But that's nothing new. All decisions here in Croatia are like this one.
  8. ♦A The chance the ♠/♥/♣ lead will give something away is bigger than opener having the ♦K. Therefore, ♦A from length = clearcut. Pretty standard lead against RHO's preempts. I bet Versace led it too. :D
  9. 1) No, but I would kindly ask for the reason of 7NT bid, just to feel the reactions. Bad cheaters are usually very bad liars. 2) 90%. 3) For sure.
  10. After 2♠-pass-? a player tanks (and passes) with Kx-Axx-Qxxxx-xxx and NS don't bid anymore (being cold for a heart game). W opened 2♠ 8-11 N had: xxxx-KJxxx-x-AKT E had: Kx-Axx-Qxxxx-xxx S had: A-Qxxx-KJTx-QJxx Some people say that the contract should be adjusted to 4♥. But, let's suppose a little modification, N/E exchanging two clubs/spades - so the hands now are: W: same N: xx-KJxxx-x-AKxxx (borderline pass) E: Kxxx-Axx-Qxxxx-x (a genuine hand with support) S: same East now probably has a clear bridge reason to think about (what is the best line in given circumstances: a. bid 3♠, b. bid 4♠, c. bid a tactical 2NT, or d. bid a non-standard tactical pass intending to revive the auction if opponents do balance)? The question is - do you still adjust? (I hope you see what I'm suggesting.)
  11. Nothing, except it takes away one useful opening from your system. And the only advantages that it offers are easily and more ellegantly compensated by playing the 1♥-1♠ Kaplan's inversion.
  12. It is a choice between opener's and responder's minor. Usually a 32(63) hand. Opener should bid his shorter minor with 25(42), if he has enough confidence in partner. :) 3♣ would have been pass/correct (not making much sense, after 2♥ was passed).
  13. 1♥ 2♥ pa 2♠ pa pa ?? We have 3163. If we fix: Partner: 5+♥ RHO: 5+♠5+m LHO: 2-3♠ What is the percentage that RHO holds clubs, as his minor suit? By intuition, I would say ~85%, but what says the math?
  14. 2♠ is the only normal rebid. So, after 2NT, i can bid 3♦ and pull subsequent 3NT to 4♣ showing a strongish 5134 hand. Just a perfect description of my hand.
  15. No. 4 players. "Any" was a bid (Double, 5♥, 6♦, whatever...).
  16. 1♣ 2NT 5♦ any Pa pa 7♠ Pa Pa pa 2NT = ♥♦ 5♦ = ♦ERKCB Pass = DOPI/ROPI ♠xxx ♥ATxx ♦AJxx ♣Qx
  17. If they're red, pass in a millisecond. If they're white, pass in 3 milliseconds. Not even close to double. If I got bluffed, I congratulate them.
  18. Sure. Mistyped. Too late to correct.
  19. MP. We vul. ♠Qx ♥AKJ ♦KQx ♣QTxxx 2♠ Dbl 3♠ 6♥ p... ?
  20. Ace and small to Q. I'm playing lefty for ♠K.
  21. The best situation to play them is: 1NT pass Jacoby pass Accept pass pass Now, double is: a ) TO with 1♥ b ) Penalty with 5♥ Partner always knows.
  22. IMP. Both vul. ♠Kxx ♥AQ8xx ♦Ax ♣Qxx (1♠) ?
  23. 1. 2NT = minors 2. Double 3. Double 4. Pass, RHO is trapping with some (43)15 hand
