How to open a weak black-2-suiter?
bearmum replied to xx1943's topic in Intermediate and Advanced Bridge Discussion
IN EITHER SAYC or 2/1 I would open 1♠ WHY in the world would u open 1♣ :D --- After 1♠ in if P bids 1NT - I have an EASY 2♣ bid in either system and over a 2/1 forcing 2♣ ♦ ♥ I can bid 3♣--- which does NOT show anything more than a minimum hand (or am I as USUAL missing something ?);) -
HI Rebound Your "Precision" sounds a lot like the one I play (with some minor differences) We play same 1♣ ♦ ♥ ♠ as you 1nt 13-15 (can't have TWO 4 card majors tho) 2♣ as you 2♦ =11-15 and 0 or 1 ♦ NO 4 card major (and 2NT resopnse asks for distribution AND range) 2♥ ♠ + 8-10 (2NT response asks for singleton) 2NT = 21-22 Over 1 and 2NT we play Jacoby transfers for majors 3♠ relays to 2NT -and 2NT relays to 3♣ and after that one can show 5/5 distributions at the 3 level Play splinters STRONG JS RKCB and various asking bids after positive response to 1♣ We did try the 1NT denies ANY 4 card major but didn't like it as much as the one we play now ( which is I THINK the garozzo/belladonna system written about 1975) It probably wouldn't go too well at "A" level ;) but we have done reasonably well with it at regional comps and at NACB at "C" grade level when we played in the USA. More to the point we enjoy playing that system , and to be perfectly honest I am trying to make my card PLAY and counting of the cards better rather than endeavouring to learn a lot of new conventions :D

GOOD one inquiry :) BBO membership costs NOTHING -an EXCEPTIONAL value
-
I think "none of the above" is a really good idea BUT :P we were asked which answer was a "world class" bid (and I did assume that the bidders were indeed "world class" and so 5♥ was a good bid ) :) RKCB only asks what Key cards in ♥ held [not length of the suit -the way I have played it for about 20 years :P] -- so I keep my original answer -- "BID 6♥ WITH A good (and presumably LONG) ♥ suit ;)
-
I voted for "bid slam in H if you have a really good H suit --- as to be honest I can't see the reason for such a big jump (UNLESS it's asking quality of ♥)-- after the 2♠ cue I presume the 2NT showed ONE stopper in ♠ As to my bid I PASS 5♥

Lavinthal Discards
bearmum replied to pbleighton's topic in General Bridge Discussion (not BBO-specific)
Sorry Free - I was also thinking of the problems with L O N G thinking of first discard (or maybre - cover or not cover an honour etc) in f2f play as well as online (where connection time CAN be a problem and NOT attempt to give UI at all) I also agree that the whole UI thing (especially online) has got totally out of hand -- to my way of thinking MOST online players play for the love of the game -- and don't cheat cos what's the satisfaction of winning IF you have to cheat??? My response was meant to say I TRY (if defending ) to LOOK at dummy , my hand and review bidding --- and BEFORE I play ANY card (unless Im on lead ;)) try to work out APPROX how I hope to play the cards I have -- ie what's my first discard going to be -------- do I cover honour on table if led so that hopefully I can play IN TEMPO All this came about because many years ago ( at one of the first times we played in a fairly BIG congress ) playing in a team match the opps tried to suggest that I was cheating by not playing in tempo (not nice) threating to call the director - to which suggestion my partner called DIRECTOR PLEASE!! Now the opps (I found out later were well known for trying to upset opps by this type of tactics) but the director had to ask me to attempt to play in tempo - and I said OK I will count 5 sec before making ANY bid or play :D --- and THAT drove opps mad (AND we won the match) BTW -- I have NEVER done anything like that since as I pretty well supposed opps WOULD be distracted, but figured in this case they deserved it  -
I also agree with THIS one Jilly -- I sometimes have spare time when I could sub -- but would like to know approx the time left when I would be needed :D

Lavinthal Discards
bearmum replied to pbleighton's topic in General Bridge Discussion (not BBO-specific)
I think you are confusing this with the issue of odd/even signals. It is fairly common to think before a discard, whatever methods you play. I agree is OK to think - BUT surely one OUGHT to THINK LONG AND HARD before u play to FIRST trick ( Or second if you are the opening leader) and WORK oput WHAT your FIRST discard is going to be [OK I am supposing playing Lav discards as my 'senior' brain can't really understand o/e] but a L O N G think before first discard MIGHT be construed as UI ----------- NOW suppose you have a really good connection - and want to THINK - then COUNT 5 sec before making ANY bid - then NP -
Guess IF you don't have a "permission to kib " set at table you COULD be accused of discrimination if you booted ONE kibber and not the others surely??

Lavinthal Discards
bearmum replied to pbleighton's topic in General Bridge Discussion (not BBO-specific)
I agree with your "Apart from that best way to improve defence is to count and more count" comment Ron - and I can play standard upsidedown revolving AND Lavinthal discards BUT my "senior" brain seems unable to understand o/e discards :P Playing against systems which do NOT rate red or yellow dots on ABF system cards in OZ ( which is what we mainly play against) and using a combination of count signals and revolving discards we find we defend reasonably well - BUT against EXPERT and WORLD CLASS players I am sure we would NEVER be in the race  -
1 NO ;) 2 PASS I have nothing more to tell P :)

Precision (as my husband and I play it) 1♣ 16+ 1♦ <8 2♥ lots of points ♥ suit -- forcing for 1 round 3♥ not slam going -- showing 3♥ 4♥ Simple :D
-
THIS time I'm lucky cos I play Precision - bidding goes 1♣so would KNOW P has 8+points AND 5 S for his 1♠ bid (if he bids 1♠that is) SO If I don't have that information I will only bid 2♥ -- if P is minimum for his 1♠ bid AND can't give me a raise then I suspect game not there

3♦ as I hope that describes my hand accurately ;)

3 different ways to bid same hand

Zero Points Opening Bid!
bearmum replied to Laird's topic in Intermediate and Advanced Bridge Discussion
I can't IMAGINE opening a hand on ZERO points :P - BUT IF your system card states " weak 2's 0-10 " then you COULD open on zero ( BUT in BBO u should alert as 0-10 ) ;) AND If it's on your CC as 0-10 then opening on Zero ( allowing for the fact you actually HAVE the suit you open -- like 6 to the 10[?]) AND you alert it then it CANNOT be a psyche (directors -- please correct me if I'm wrong) As to what could be an effective defence I am at a loss -- except to say I THINK such an unusual system might have to make available notes for defence against it ?? (once again directior please advise) :) -

NO :)

Interesting pclayton --- the hand you quote as an opener (11 HCP and 5 ♥) my reg partner and I WOULD open in 2nd seat --- BUT probably would pass in 4th seat - and I would open the 12 point hand in 4th seat at IMPS (and occasionally will get a BAD score if opps get to play the contract in 2♠ BUT we play a fairly simple Precision which makes it easier in some cases to stop in part score contracts ;) OTOH I play occasionally online with a lovely lady from CA -- and she asked me to play Pearson points - THIRTEEN to open in 3rd position(NV) and 15 in 4th --- and so far it's worked OK for us :)

Just a question - HOW do you find out which version U have/ - I got the "new download ready - next time u log in it will install---- " message - the next time I logged in NOTHING downloaded as far as I can tell B)

As BBO is used by players from all over the world it is probably as well to alert the agreements you have with partner no matter if they are non alertable in the USA. Here in Australia STAYMAN is alertable ( I disagree with the rule B) BUT that IS the rule, and as such I do alert Stayman when playing here ) AS to the adjustment -- not being a director I'm not qualified to judge :D
