  1. Maybe this answer does not rely on the SPECIFIC hand that all had :) I think it depends IF you are allowed to alert bids over 3NT (in Australia while bidding all bids over 3NT are NOT allowed to be alerted at the table and I think that's unreasonable -- because to ASK what a bid means and then PASS might convey UI to P --- but that's a different story!! ) BUT whatever the local rules are - SURELY you can ask (online anyway) what EVERY bid means?? If you don't ask yopu don't know what opps mean by their calls??
  2. I agree 5 or 6 would be OK :) and I will TRY to post replies as I think it important to participate if folks are putting in time to post problems AND collate replies :D CAN we have the poll pinned at the TOP of the list when logging in for "view new posts" please???
  3. The ONLY trouble with this idea is MOST people DONT have any CC ----- Let alone a "default" one :)
  4. LIKE that one fluffy we would bid it 1♣(Precision) 1♥ 2♥(asking )3♠( AKQ OR 6 to 2 of top 3 in ♥) 7♥ Another one from F2F ---- I haven't got the ACTUAL hand but (playing Precision) my P opened 1♣ (he had 26 points and SIX ♦ to the AKJ) ---I replied 2♦( showing 5D and 8+ points)--- and he bid 7♦ which was COLD -- and 7NT made ONLY because I had the Q♥ Lots of folks bid 6NT - NONE 7NT and only 1 other couple bid the GS in ♦
  5. WOW another one(second in a few days :) ) for the now DEFUNCT Schenken 2♦(asking for SPECIFIC Aces and if necessary Kings and Queens too ) This will ALWAYS get to correct contract no Matter what P has If P shows A♠ and A♣ SIMPLE to call for Kings JUST to make sure 7NT COLD IF P has A♠ AND Q♥ then 7♦ also there or 0 Aces and as little as Q♥ SIX ♦ is cold ( and I don't think MANY other systems can say that 6 is COLD ) Using other systems I'm sure GS can be bid though :)
  6. Does this mean you are not going to particpate? IF so that is unfortunate, as I am sure we were all looking forward to your participation. LOL Ben - But I agree SOME things in BBO advanced are conventions I have not learned (mainly because they are not needed with my F2F partner -- and others are too advanced for a pickup P online :) ) However I would still find it great to participate in such a forum (EXCEPT for the 9 weeks when I will be on vacation and away from ANY computers ) and I am sure I would learn LOTS from comments from the panel :)
  7. I think it would be fun BUT I am NOT ADV/Expert plus - nor am I BIL :)
  8. Still used nowadays in french standard ! 2♦ = GF any hand Responses are something like : 2♥ = 0-7H no ace 2♠= 1 major ace. 2NT = 8H+ or 2 kings no ace 3♣ =♣A 3♦ = ♦A 3♥= suit by KQ at least fifth no ace 3♠ = Same in spade 3NT = 2 Aces Alain WOW - nice structure :D and really useful as long as 2♦ is an ABSOLUTE game force -- even if P is bust The thing with Schenken 2♦ bid was is WASN'T an absolute game force bid -- could be used for really freak hands where one needed to find out about WHICH specific aces ( and then possibly specific Kings and Queens) your partner had  ANd SOMEWHERE I think I still have her original book too ;)
  9. Interesting Hog - MANY MANY years ago my P and I played Schenken (a really simple strong 1 Club system), and that had an opening 2♦ asking for SPECIFIC Aces ( where you could show more than one too :D) --- then rest of bids asked for kings and after that queens . Now we got to use it a occasionally BUT when we did we normally get a good score because: 1 we got to a few GS which others missed because we KNEW that we had the right cards (and therefore certain it was there) 2 we stayed OUT of slam because we knew we had the WRONG cards (even MORE critical) The best thing was it was EASY to remember 2♦ as ace asking :)
  10. Playing Precision 1♣ Playing anything else whatever is your GAME force bid - ending up in 6 or 7♣ depending on P's response
  11. OK Hannie -- I agree with all your points IF partner will reply to 1♦ with only 4 points and a 5 card major 1♦ opening is probably the BEST thing to do --- however I believe that MOST (non expert)sayc players --especially if not an established partnership-- won't respond unless they have at least 6 points, so game might be missed if P has as few as 4 points :)
  12. My thoughts exactly. Not only opps are likely to intervene but even partner will bid 2M with a weak hand and 6 cards if you play WJO. Petko (This post was AFTER my previous one where I answered the original question before looking at all the other posts ) BUT IF you don't play WJO - THEN 1♦(non forcing ) could mean U miss game if P has ONLY 4 points and NO 6 card suit for a WJS ( or am I missing something? :) ) AND even if you DO play WJS - what happens if P has 4 points and ONLY a 5 card suit??
  13. Playing SAYC or 2/1 (as opposed to a 1C forcing system like Precision -which I DO play  ) I really think it's a 2♣ opener -- because 1♦(non forcing) is a GROSS underbid IMHO Assuming that P answers 2♦ (waiting) I then bid 3♦, which IMHO describes MY hand well - over to partner to bid his hand :) Hopefully with 2+ points he will bid his 4 card suit --- and we will get to game
  14. 1 NO 2 NO 3 Don't like the odds at all --- maybe 20% (off the top of my head rather than scientific ) 4 Immaterial :P (to me anyway )
  15. I agree ;) My reg P and I were playing in NACB in DC ------ in the 0-50 room ( where we were legally allowed to play cos we had only been living in US for almost 3 years - so FEW ACBL points)--- and one table opps said (with LITERALLY shaking hands) "This is our FIRST tournament outside club tourneys-- and we are beginners" OK First round - one OPP opened out of turn ! We called director (cos IF u don't beginners may NOT realise there are penalties for opening out of turn [or other things]) Director came (AND was from OUR home club{SMALL world  }) --- and explained ALL the possibilities-- 1st one was Icould accept the bid and all bids after were normal So I did accept the bid -- even though I felt that we COULD have got a BIG plus score by not accepting it --- but I feel that as LONG time players I really didn't want to take advantage of a nervous beginner's mistake BTW we got a good score ANYWAY and hopefully there are two more players who are still enjoying playing (probably at club level still)
  16. POST edited OK - I assume this was this F2F with convention cards available? IF the question was ASKED at the table by the person on the Left hand of the 2!s bidder who could NOT bid or double no matter WHAT the answer!!! NOW after the bidding as shown IF the opening lead WAS a !h (UNLESS from 4 or 5 NICE Hearts) and the 3NT went off due to the fact that the questioner HAD NICE !hs -----I would call the director --- and say I think the whole thing was a result of UI by opps :)
  17. "When I do play, I play 75% of time w/my tournament partner. We have fairly intensive system, and we are frequently harassed when we alert bids." In ANY club (no matter where) no director should (IMO) let players be harrassed for alerting bids which HAVE to be alerted "We dont alert bids just to confuse people though" This should be an automatic disqualification of player director (and reportable to ACBL) AND in my opinion why the ACBL should look at ALL clubs (who run club games where ACBL points are awarded) to make sure they are run according to the RULES of the ACBL - who in Regional ( Maybe State?) and CERTAINLY Nationals have a ZERO tolerance policy. ANY club not willing to follow rules should NOT be allowed affiliation (AND that should apply to ALL countries) I have the same problem here in Australia with SOME players seem to be allowed to get away with "unfair" but not "unethical" (a FINE line) behaviour but because MOST of the time I feel that directors at CLUB level are doing the best they can and MOST players at club games (ESPECIALLY those just out of 'learners' )are really NOT trying to "cheat" via hesitation etc that I tend to let it slide --- BUT I DO call director for call or lead out of term or failure to alert what SHOUD be alerted JUST because beginners need to learn there ARE penalties for those type of infractions :)
  18. Think U jave the right idea - as for me WHENEVER I play Rubber I ALMOST never get reasonable cards - SO RARELY win - which is why I won't play rubber (unless for matchsticks :) ) ALSO I am not NEARLY rich (or a good enuff player) to contemplate playing for TEN dollars a point !!!!!
  19. I too have no expertise as to the difficulty of coding Bandwidth etc, but agree I would HATE to see many "mini" BBOs Splitting VuGraph sounds good, and perhaps when in a T room ONLY seeing table chat and director's comments?
  20. with a minimum opener I will bid 2♥---- let P know that I have support HE can force next roung IF he is strong
