  1. I don't think this is quite the same as the one Han posted recently. I think it is highly probable RHO has enough to make 3♠ a making contract. I think partner also likely has enough that 4♥ is either a make or no worse than one off. Of course, I could be wrong and/or maybe partner gets too enthusiastic. However, my guess (and it is a guess) is that bidding is better than passing. Nick no, it probably isn't but I meant what I said. This was a hand from the Australian Junior Team Selection for 2007. I was sitting East but had a different auction. It was quite funny what the contract was at both tables.
  2. Have an awesome one dude...don't get too drunk :) All prepared for Beijing? :P
  3. I'm all in for 1S. If I had to choose to open 2C on this hand or the other one in the other thread I would definitely choose the other one as that had a lot of playing strength (even though irl I won't). This one just looks like an ordinary decent hand. I'm not afraid of missing any game because if my partner really passes I highly doubt game can make. I also agree that 1M-1NT-3x auctions can get a bit tough, I guess that's why (?) some people play 1M-1NT-2NT as any GF to distinguish some hand types like 5-4, 5-5 etc.
  4. You're South and you hold [hv=d=w&s=sxxhxxdat7xxcak7x]133|100|Scoring: IMP[/hv] You're in 4th Seat. Bidding goes (P)-P-(1H)- do you overcall? You can specify the vul.
  5. Definitely agree with 4H. A-6th and Ax are pretty hot opposite a 13-15 splinter. Imagine if partner had Kxxx of spades - now give him another 10-12 and slam is pretty good! As to what I do now, I'm going to pass. I feel like I've 3/4-said-my-hand and also bypassed 4D too. The 5-level seems safe if I want to make another move but it's easy to construct the 'worst possible' hands partner can have which we may be 3 tricks off the top.
  6. heheh how can we not agree if it's systemic :) Anyway, I would bid 1NT on the first hand. Partner may not be entirely broke as he might be stuck for a bid. Something as little as ♣Qxxx and 7 tricks looks easy. 2nd choice would be a pass. On the 2nd hand, my hand looks like it's all about hearts and defense so I will happily pass.
  7. Sorry, I'm not particularly interested if responder can't have a 4cM when he bids stayman but I have listed the constraints. There are upsides and downsides in prioritising the 5th major or probing for 3NT vs. 5m. For example, these hands: 1) [hv=d=w&w=saxxhakjxdqjxcjxx&e=skjxxhxxxdakxxxcx]266|100|[/hv] VS. [hv=d=w&w=saxxhakjxdqjxcjxx&e=skjxxhxxxdakxxxcx]266|100|[/hv] 1NT-2♣-2♥-3♦-? 2) [hv=d=w&w=saxxhakjxdqjxcjxx&e=skjxxhxxxdakxxxcx]266|100|[/hv] VS. [hv=d=w&w=saxxhakjxdqjxcjxx&e=skjxxhxxxdakxxxcx]266|100|[/hv] 1NT-2♣-2♠-3♣-?
  8. I think I'll opt for 5C. My hand is decent but not that great as I've got lots of stuff in the black suits. On the bright side they are controls in the black suits and I've got the red queens for partner. I don't want partner in agony if he has something like xx AKxxx AKxxx x as our hand could be worse.
  9. 4441, NV and club queen could be dubious - that sways me to 2S. Past threads have convinced me to raise to 2 with these kind of hands (and also playing 1D as an unbal hand )
  10. Let's say you open 1NT (You freely allow 5cM). Partner staymans and you bid your 4 or 5card major (only showing 4+). Partner now bids 3♣/3♦ showing 5+m 4oM GF (which I presume everything up to now is standard). I'm interested in what style you now play by opener? Does opener bid the cheapest suit in which he has values in, or is his priority to show his 5th card major? And also, what about over transfer auctions? Something like 1NT-2H; 2S-3C; 3D vs 3H
  11. Too many intermediates for me to pass. I'm going to invite via 2NT invitational if i have that available.
  12. http://au.news.yahoo.com/a/-/newshome/5007823 ... if only people understood the physics behind it rather than just randomly complain..
  13. No, you're not worried about slam...you're worried about finding the right strain. 3NT kills a lot of space. And if we do have 28 count combined slam can easily be on if we have a fit somewhere (knowing where all the high cards are) etc.
  14. I'd lead a spade. A heart doesn't seem like we'll be taking 4 tricks in that suit, diamond ace might totally lose the tempo/give away the 9th trick. Normally if the 3NT was the opening bid the DA is much more attractive lead, but partner's opened in 3rd seat which may suggest a half decent suit and declarer may still not have 9 top tricks.
  15. You are only playing transfer advances after partner's overcall at the 1-level. Ie. 1C-1H-P-__ 1D-1S-P-__ You also play 2NT by advancer as natural and invitational. How do people handle GF balanced hands? (presumably with only 2card support for partner) Is it just the same thing as if you weren't playing transfer advances, so like rather than cue opponent's suit, you transfer to partner's suit...then bid 2NT?
  16. Let's say you are dealer and you hold either of these shapes of 2=3=6=2 or 2=3=7=1 with like a minimum hand. Auction goes: 1♦ - 2♣ - 2♠ - Pass 3♦ - Pass - 3♥ - Pass ? 1. Let's say you play a style where partner's 2♠ originally can be like an 8count with a decent suit or better (not like a 'textbook 10+pts 5+suit' etc). Are you able to distinguish the 3♦ bids if it's like a minimum that has nothing else to bid or a hand that has like a 16count with no other bids than 3♦? Or do you just play it by ear? 2. Also assume you don't have a club stopper. Does anyone play "4th suit" here (4♣) as like a "choice of games"? What are your thoughts on it?
  17. You're in 1st seat as South at all vul, playing 2/1, holding: [hv=d=s&v=b&s=s6hakqdat63cat732]133|100|Scoring: IMP[/hv] You open 1♣, partner responds 1♠, RHO bids 2♦. Your bid.
  18. I don't really know what 3NT is best used as, some people were advocating it as minors, some natural with something like a running suit with Kxx stopper. The entire layout was something like [hv=d=e&v=n&n=sj98xxhqt9xdxctxx&w=skqtxxhkxdktxcxxx&e=sxhajxxxxdqjxxcqx&s=sa2h3da8742cakj82]399|300|[/hv]
