Graham. Which one was he? :) Erm This one was mine. Got a habit of doubling (not in league matches) when I think oposition should not be in contract they are in rather than knowing I should be taking them off. Another problem of mine is hiding Partners smaller mistakes behind some of my klangers. Would it be any defence if I said that I know my Partner would make a game try bid with a minimum and a 6 card suit :)

What doe sthis Double mean?

1NT escape when X is in pass out
DWM replied to DWM's topic in Intermediate and Advanced Bridge Discussion
With this system how does Opener know if a 2C/D bid by responder in 7th seat (had to work that one out) is to play or suggestion where to play. I assume you would bid 2C on either of these hands 2-3-4-4 2-2-3-6 How would Opener know what to do holding a fairly common hand type such as 3-3-5-2 -
I have looked this one up on the net and not come back with that much. Only thing i have seen is Pass/Redouble by opener shows/denies 4 clubs. For reference When the double is imediate we play the following Direct bids = system on. (stayman/transfers) XX force 2C then pass or bid diamonds for escape in minor pass force XX to play or escaping hand with at least 2 4 card suits and bid up the line to fine a 7 card fit. Any suggestions for what to play when a 1NT opening gets doubled in the pass out seat?? So far we have made this up. By Opener Pass = no 5 card minor XX = 5 clubs 2C = 5 diamonds After XX or 2C responder has to place the contract. After pass XX force 2C then pass or bid 5 card suit. suit bids escaping hand with at least 2 4 card suits and bid up the line to fine a 7 card fit. I know with the above sods law states that every time responder has a reasonable hand and pass out seat doubles opener will have 5 diamonds.

To make another list. Rather than mistakes during play, these are what I think the biggest mistakes are beyond the bididng and card play Playing blame games rather than constructive post mortums (if done at all) Not learning from mistakes, and making the same ones again and again. Changing your play/bidding because of one freak result. Blindly adding something into your system without thinking of the effects it has on the rest of the system. When you find a hole in the system you play just saying oh well and goign onto the next hand rather than thinking about it, reading up, asking advice on what can be done.

The mistakes that I have seen/Done far too often are Bidding too high with misfits. Not appreciating which bids are forcing/invitational/competitive. Rebidding NT because shortage in responders suit. Or put differently, changing a hand from an unbalanced one to balanced just because of 1 bid from P. Only planning the play midway through the hand, or not amending an initial plan when the unexpected happens mid play. Asking unnecessary questions in the bidding.

[hv=d=n&v=e&s=sqj7hq853dq972c65]133|100|Scoring: MP[/hv] Playing a mini NT when P opens with 1NT do you bid 2C here looking to pass the reply or do you leave it in 1NT. Would you make a different bid if playing teams?

Not only is bidding 1♠ good for trying to win the contract it could help out in defense so much as well. -
Just checked the records, (its nice to play in a club that posts hands and travelers on the web). Not one time was the board played in 3NT. Time to sit down with P and work out minimum requirements and remember how they effect choices for P.

[hv=d=w&v=n&n=sqhj64dkq8742ca94&s=sathak32daj95c732]133|200|Scoring: MP[/hv] Last week we held these hands and got bullied in the bidding West Opened (2♠*) - P - (4♠) all pass 2♠ = 5/4 spades and a minor wk. When we looked at the results afterwards the majority of the room found 5♦ which makes. Not 100% sure how when East held K9743 QT85 T63 Q Is there anything that we could have sensibly done, or did the opponents just bid it better than everyone else in the room.

[hv=v=e&n=sajhq6d9874ck9653&s=sqt43h42dkqcaqt87]133|200|Scoring: MP[/hv] Bidding opened by South 1♣ - (1♥) - 2♣ - (P) P - (2♥) - 3♣ - (P) P - (3♥) Playing 2/1 with mini NT do you agree with the N/S bidding so far? With the bidding so far does either N or S have a good argument to further compete?

[hv=s=sakjhakj54dac7642]133|100|[/hv] your partner opens a mini NT (10-12) Firstly would you start to look for a slam with this hand? Tools available to you 2C Stayman Jacoby Transfers, after reply straight jump to 4NT is quantitive. 3 of a suit slam interest in that suit. If you would look for a slam what is your bidding plan?

[hv=d=w&v=n&s=s7653h52dj54cakt2]133|100|Scoring: MP[/hv] Bidding (1♥) - 2♦ - (P) - ?? What is your bid and why? At the table I was unsure, I thought that if P was max we could have game on and we could also have 4-4 in spades. As it was MP's I thought to look for spades, might have made a simple raise in diamonds in teams, but then not sure if raising diamonds denys a spade interest. your thoughts and comments please.

After 1m - 1M 1NT 2♣ is a bit like stayman First it asks for 3 card support for the major (max or min) Then it asks for 4 card support for the other major (max or min) Then it asks for strength of the hand. slospin.net has a good page on it

[hv=d=n&v=n&s=sak2hj6dktcjt9752]133|100|Scoring: MP[/hv] Bidding all your way P - 1♣ 1♥ - 1NT 2♣ We play simple checkback stayman. I assume that this should be the case here as well since Dealer can still have an invitational hand. As you have no fit and a minimum for the 1NT bid do you pass the 2♣ now or bid 2♦ as the convention says? Would your bid change if playing IMPS rather than MP's? My thoughts were that P should not have 4-5 in the majors with 11 points as this would be opened, and unlikley to have a 10 point hand with 4-5 in the majors and much to shout about as this should be opened as well. Therefore he has 5 hearts and 10+/11 points otherwise balanced as he is happy to convert 2♠ into 2NT. Therefore leaving the 2♣ bid in could give us a good score

Had a situation this week (P) - 2♠ - (3♣)* When I asked what the 3♣ bid meant I was told any opening hand. Thinking about it either they have a really strange system or I was not given the full story. At a friendly club night would it be reasonable to make much of a fuss over the description when it does effect what I do. In a tournament I would want to know more. What is the best, most polite whilst gaining the information required, way of going about this.

Laods of Spades, not many points

I did have another question from this hand. After (P) - 2♠ - (3♥) - 4♠ (5♥) - P - (P) - ?? What do you do with AQJ92 AJ3 9 A765 Just to remind you we are red they are white vun. -

[hv=s=sxxxhxdaqxckqtxxx]133|100|[/hv] This was the hand that I held. Now P has bid spades I assume it is correct to bid 3♠ to show support. Did bidding 2♣ show extra strength or could it be made on distribution? I bid it because I thought the singleton ♥ plus the 6th ♣ with 3 of the top 5 made this hand worth the free bid.

[hv=d=e&v=b&s=shk984daj83ckt843]133|100|[/hv] 1♥ opened on your right At the table I was so tempted with a 2NT bid I bid it. My reasoning was I did not want P to get over excited holding 6 spades, and this could be my only opertunity to get my hand off my chest Afterwards I thought that 2NT was the safe bid and there is a chance that the oposition could find a 8 or 9 card spade fit and struggle with a bad break. What would you bid and what are your thoughts.
-
1♣ (X) XX (1♥) 2♣ (P) 2♠ Is the 2♠ forcing?
-
Not too sure how correct this is but here I go I would have taken the 4♣ bid as a slam try. From that if P is missing two aces and the K and Q of trumps he must have some very nice cards elsewhere to try for slam, especially if he has effectivley 0 points in diamons and a max of 5 in clubs. Not sure on the percentages here but I usually think/go for slams when it needs one of two finesses to come off.

What does this bidding show
DWM replied to DWM's topic in Intermediate and Advanced Bridge Discussion
If it is a game try for spades what is the difference between 1C - 1H 1S - 2S 3S and 1C - 1H 1S - 2S 2NT -
Had this sequance last night and wondered what sort of hand opener has shown. 1C - 1H 1S - 2S 2NT Our system is a fairly basic 2/1. However, we do use checkback staymen if that makes any difference.
