For a 3 level pre-empt I would expect P to have at least 6 winners in his hand should diamonds be trumps, and more likely 7. So with QJxxxxx he should have an outside entry to the trumps. Therefore I would bid 3NT straight away. I cannot see this going down anywhere near enough times for it to be against the odds to bid 3NT. But then perhaps I have got stuck on keeping to the -300/-500 rule albeit as a guide rather than a rule.

The second double shows 16+ support points. He could have somthing along the lines of 4-4-4-1 4-3-5-1 3-4-4-2 3-4-5-1 Doubt he has something like 4-5-3-1 As he would have enough points to bid hearts first then reverse into spades.

I like the first 4 bids, including the two passes. Would never hide a 4 card support for P. based on the bidding so far I am not that much against Easts 2♥. But then I am not that good at hand evaluation. The 3♦ is far too risky. If I ever made a bid like that I would find P with a 2-5-2-4 hand with most of his points in hearts Easts 3♥ seems to be a stretch to try and catch up with himself after the first pass I assume the 4♦ was made to give EW a gift in the hope that is encourages them to bid like this in the future West must have a good understanding of East with the 4♥ bid, and a bit of luck on his side. The double is probably one made on the assumption that when someone is in a game contract they do not deserve to be in they should double. The redouble could be a redouble for a laugh as P is playing it, or one to try and put extra pressure on oponents.

If you have gone this far surley the 6♦ bid is a must. I would be so proud to have remembered all of that I would want another round of bidding just to savour the moment. For my try I would go along the lines of 1H - 1S 3D - 4C 4H - 4NT 5D - 6NT Or at least I hope. The 3D bid is not that great, but in the back of my mind would be someone saying if you are going to have to lie about a bit of your hand lie about the minors. To me a 3H bid should promise a suit that is almost self sufficient. Not an easy one to bid on standard systems.

Play the diamond back. Playing a spade is silly as it gives an undeserved trick, likewise for a heart. Playing a club back would put P on lead, when relying on a mistake I much prefer Ops to have the first chance -
I dont like diamonds, if West started with a singlton why help him set them up by encouraging P to lead another. P has shown interest in the round tops, and you have help there.

[hv=d=s&v=n&s=s2hq875dq9873c762]133|100|Scoring: IMP[/hv] Please do not consider the hands in my other post today. Bidding has gone P - (1♣) - X - (1♠) P - (2♣) - X - (P) 2♦- (3♣) - P - (P) Do you bid 3♦ here? If not 3♥? Both doubles are for take out

[hv=d=n&v=n&n=s2hq875dq9873c762&s=sakt95hakj6dk62c8]133|200|Scoring: IMP[/hv] Bidding North dealer P - (1♣) - X - (1♠) P - (2♣) - X - (P) 2♦ - (3♣) - P - (P) 3♦ - (P) - P - (4♣) P - (P) - 5♦ all passed I have double checked the hands and bidding, yes they are correct. Both doubles are take out. Play starts with East ♣A.8.3.2 ♣K.♦2.♣4.6 South first ♥6.3.Q.2 North first ♦3.T.K.A West first ♦4 Do you play the Queen or the 9? EW are not playing any count signals. I will ask about the bidding in another post.
-
Declarer has the Queen, or P will have a sore nose. All but P knows this, or at least the first bit. I would signal a Heart by playing 2♣. There are 8 tricks for NS in the minors on table and they have already have one trick in the majors. Therefore, it is time to get busy and grab as many heart tricks as possible before they get discarded on those diamonds.
-
I cannot see the point of telling P about the club ace. The most informative card to play is the q♠ shows him a run in spades headed by the queen
-
Assuming we play 2nds and 4ths all the time P started with 2 hearts, declarer 4 including the leftover QJ This meant that declarer started with at least 5-4 in the majors, hence, no more than 4 cards in the minors. Should he have the club ace this means the KQJ in dummy can clear his minors and roll in the contract. to save P the guess as to which minor to play after the heart ruff play the ace of diamonds first. Assuming this is correct I would highly recommend that people buy 'why you lose at bridge' I have not yet finished reading it for the first time and I am finding it is helping me look at hands in a different way.

Find the Right Line of Play
DWM replied to ralph23's topic in Intermediate and Advanced Bridge Discussion
If you take the finesse and it loses 68% of the time you will still make 3 tricks as you will have the top 2 remaining cards plus the 4th trick. The way the question is worded the bonus of the finesse getting the 4th trick sort of makes me think that there may just possibly be an alternative line to help secure the 3rd trick at expense of the 4th. At the table I would like to try and leave this suit till last so I can factor in oposition error (on a good night that makes my line 100% on a bad night makes no difference) To win 3 tricks when the suit splits 4-1 the king has to be dropped, hence the play of an ace. On this line when the suit splits 3-2 two the AQJ will still make plus the 4th trick. Down to the maths now 68% for all 3-2's 4-1 split with king singleton = 20% of 28% = 5.6% 73.6% chance by playing ace then queen then jack -
how can 3♥ force to the 5 level when it is only invitational +
-
Even after Wests first mistake I don't think its best leaving P to make the 6 level choice. East has already shown with the 5♠ bid that they are more offensive than defensive. Therefore with the void I would bid 6♠
-
Almost ditto I am torn between double and 4H, saying that if I bid 4H now it will be harder to justify my previous pass in the PM.

[hv=d=n&v=n&s=s97hkq8dak985ca32]133|100|Scoring: MP[/hv] Bidding is 1♥ - (5♣) Playing 2/1 What is your bid? If other what and why?
-
This is not how I thought redouble was used. However, the only books I have read regarding redouble was the menagarie series and the Hog sytle redoubles
-
Is 3♦ forcing standard here? I thought it would only be forcing if you agreed to use Lebenshol after a reverse?
-
Sorry it was Lucas as in Hearts and a Minor. Did not realise the difference until I looked into it a bit more. On thier card it did say Hearts and a Minor, I was being lazy with the typing.
-
[hv=d=w&v=n&s=shakq3dkq75ckqt98]133|100|[/hv] Bidding has gone (2♥*) - P - (2♠*) - I knew that the 2♥ is Lucas as it was on thier system card and we discussed it before we started. I did not ask what the 2♠ bid was and passed to see how things developed. Probably a mistake but I was confused. Afterwards I asked why the 2♠ was alerted and I was told it was pass or correct. I take it they got lucky on this one as it stands. My main question is what should have I done if I asked what the 2♠ bid was before I passed? Both in bidding and legaly. We missed slam whilst they stumbled on thier 10 card fit.
-
How happy am I that it looks like I will be able to provide at least 2 defensive tricks on an average day and Partner can penalise. I am even happier when I realise that it is not one of my pen doubles :D OK sods law states that they have a massive round top double fit and we have just a big pointy double fit, but for once its not me who made the bad pen double. Plus if P wants to run he still has time
-
Loads of questions from me, hope it does not get annoying. I am trying to look at our play afterwards more and more. [hv=v=e&s=st965hqj95dkcqjt2]133|100|Scoring: MP[/hv] 3 passes to your partner (P) - P - (P) - 1♥ (1♠) - 2♥ - (P) - 2♠ (X) After P's good raise and the double what should you bid? The double Pen of spades
-
Yea you got it right East opened, the hand shown is south
-
[hv=d=e&v=e&s=sk9763h863dca6532]133|100|Scoring: MP[/hv] Bidding Starts with east. They are vun we are not 1♦ - P - (1NT) - 2♥ (P) - P - (3♦) - P (P) - 3♥ When should have south got involved in the bidding?
-
Playing 2/1 (if it makes a difference) 1♣ - 1♦ 2♦ - 2♥ 2♠ Is it better to play the heart bid as a stop show or a natural suit? Is it better to play the spade suit as a stop show or a general FSF?
