What is your opening bid of 5C+4M ? (1c?)
-
If i have to take a guess at this point, 5c is best (better then 5d , 3nt and partsocores) also slams seems out of the question, since 3c is inv but nf. So either i bid it, or i can try to reach it slowly with 3h which will still leave room for 3nt by partner, but i doubt this will help, i wont know if 3nt is any better then, so i choose 5c now.

I agree that diamond can be a sgl, but i dont think it would be smart to lose to Qx heart in west's hand and going down with a diamond ruff. I think west would lead diamond and not spade if he had 3 cards in spades and 5 in diamonds. So imo east hand is more likely to be 5314 then 4414. Therfore i will play A and K of heart and not run the J. Also the play of the J is a problem because you dont have the entry to finnese again, unless you give up on using The Q of diamond for throwing a club. Playing AK unlike playing The J doesnt put all the eggs in 1 basket, maybe he just dont know bridge and lead the diamond. AK are 40% instead of the noraml finnese but it give you better chances of not losing 2 clubs.

Ben what do you bid with 7-8 hcp and 4 card support ? Can 2nt handle 6+ hcp ?
-
We play something close, just after 1sp we use 3h and 3d instead of 3c and 3d. Also we use 3c of boochi doubid to show 5/5 minor (so after 1h we use 2nt and 3d for the support and after 1sp we use 3d and 3h) other ways i have seem among experts is playing jumps as fit jumps. Also boochi doubin use only one bid for the support 3d on 1s and 2nt on 1h, which show 7-11 (opner can reinvite)
-
I dont agree with you fluffy on the relooking proccess, usually in situations like that you take the first bid and use it as negative bid, meaning i got no more shape, no support no stoper. maybe its a matter of style. but i prefer to "cheat" on a low bid like 2d here, also i prefer o cheat in minor then major. About the club bids, atleast for me, 1d-1h-1s-3c is invitational. the only way (for me) to show club is bidding clubs later. I think this style is not only mine but its the normal one, which still doesnt mean its he best one.

Is this bidding correct?

2sp would be very good here imo, this hand isnt too good for the bid. -
how do you play with a novice?
Flame replied to helium's topic in General Bridge Discussion (not BBO-specific)
I play almost normally with a begginer i wont steal games bidding NTs when i shouldnt, but in close decisions i will enter skills into the equation which will make me underbid more often. I will try to take good scores and wont look always for the ultimate scores, i will always try to make things easier for him, its no point playing a genious diffence or bidding a genious bid if partner need to do something he cant. But in general i just play simple bridge. -
playing spade first contain another problem other then AQxxx, u can lose 2 spades 2 clubs and a diamond. Still there are hands where it will work out best. Playing 9 of diamond is a problem because when west has QJxx he will probebly cover and you will know know how to continue (you are not too rich in entries, so you dont want to wast an entry if west only has Qx), so playing A and then to the 9 is better, and probebly what i would play.
-
Thxs all, I agree that with 4333 its probebly wrong to super accept. I can also agrere that you might want to leave 3h for retransfer, but it can still work in long suit trial, as 2nt (after 2h) will be heart long trial. I think this system is better then showing doublton which rarly will help. I really liked helen's idea of using only one bid and letting partner show his shortness, I think its better then my long trials and much better then the normal way of always showing doublton, still you can use the other bids for different perposes although im not sure what those could be. Thxs
-
Don't you think 2h show 3 card support ? I think 3c would be natural GF with clubs.
-
Super acception of transfer is most usefull when partner has an unbalanced hand with less then 8 hcp, if u just rebid 2M he will pass not knowing about the fit and the fit points he can add for it, but when he know of the fit his shape become more importent, he can count points for long suits or for singles. Till now i play that any suit response to transfer is super acception and doubleton in the suit, but today i thought of something maybe better, since opener cant be short in a suit and partner will have a short suit (when he got the important hand) why not play long (losers) suit trail bid. 1NT-2h 3x = losers in the suit bid. The hand from today was: KQ75 J85 Ak7 K106 ----- AJ932 972 J1065 9 we went down in 4sp, which we got after super acception, but if partner could bid 3h over my 2h, we would be making 3sp. What do you think, is this a better way ?

Hey nice contest, i took my vote. I have to say hand 3 previous bids are wrong.
-
I will one day , soon i hope. Thxs.
-
Its not crazy, just that i prefer to check for slam below 3nt, and also i dont usually use rkcb to check for slam, rkcb is for aces after you decided you have the slam value and only want to check that you dont have 2 aces missing. (if i dont miss 2 aces im always in slam) I dont know maybe low level aces asking has another phylosofy, maybe you can land yourself in 4nt of something, or inv slam later, but its not my way of reaching slams.
-
Hey Ron i think you are wrong here, altleast according to WJ2000, 1d-1h-1s-2c is forth suit and not magister I will quote from the WJ2000 file page 61 " Attention: The sequence 1d-1h-1s-2c is not Magister but fourth-suit forcing - which is important for finding a club stopper. "
-
Yes i ment GF. I wanted him to bid 3h here, but he said 3d isnt a slam invastigation bid, its just showing a club problem and diamond fit looking for best game, and as he already denied a club stoper (he would bid 2nt with a club stops) his 3nt should show half a stoper in club. The hand he thought i have is something like xx AJxxx Qxx Axx Or Jx AKJxx Qxx Jxx
-
First of all i really dont think you should do all this kind of what if thinking, just like when you have 12 hcp and 5 card spades you open 1sp, you dont start thiking, they will bid 2c my partner probebly have hearts and will bid 2h then... Here its simple they bid your suit, you got tons of diffence so just pass. But i will tell you how i think it would go, if you bid 3c there are two choices, either the fit is bad, partner has 3 clubs, or a poor diffensive 4 card, opponents will not bid again and 3c will go down just as 2sp would. The second possibility , partner has good fit, nice offinsive hand, they will find their way to 3sp, but partner with a spade void and good fit will never let them play there, he will bid 4c which will go down. Now lets see what happend if you pass, either they keep on bidding, or it get to partner's which has a spade void and therefore very likely to double it for takout, now you can pass.
-
you know, it is entirely possible to answer someone's question without scathing rhetoric, you should try it some time, just for kicks. Well it was just my way to explain that i think 3c is very wrong. Its atleast partly due to my bad english. Im sorry if it offended anyone.

2-suited overcalls
Flame replied to Wackojack's topic in General Bridge Discussion (not BBO-specific)
He wanted to use only 2 bids. -
we play 4st forcing at the 2 level as forcing, but even tho we had a probelem reaching slam with those hands. we play polish club which mean 1d showed 5 card. [hv=n=sa543hq10dak432cq8&s=sqj7hakj87dq97ca7]133|200|[/hv] 1D-1H 1S-2C 2D- 3D 3NT - p I thought 3d show fit and thinking of more and 3nt was just a bad hand so i passed. My partner thought 2d show no club stop, and with the Qx of club, he thought he should bid 3nt now. He might have a point because if i got Axx of club we should play 3nt from his side. He thought i should bid something different then 3d, 3sp or 4d were his suggests. I dont like 4d because its above 3nt, and i dont know what 3sp is but it doesnt seems like diamond fit. How do we solve this ?

Is this bidding correct?
Flame replied to blover's topic in Intermediate and Advanced Bridge Discussion
I wouldnt double, no matter if this is a forcing pass or not, its ok to do this sometimes. i thik 5sp is little better then double at imp (at mp 5sp seems bad) it think your partner had to double here with his two aces, and weak hand. -
Your opponents bid 2sp and you have 5 spades ? what exactly is the question, ofcourse you pass. Bidding 3c hoping the opponents bid 3sp ?why not bid 7c hoping they bid 7sp ?

I take back what i said that there is no way to live without regulations, The simple question is do we want to allow people to prepare a specific tool against whatever they meet at the table or not. If we agree to let people prepare thier tools then they must know before the turnaments what they can meet there which mean regulations. But there is another way, play without regulations, this as i see it will do 3 things, first it will give adv to unknown systems, second it will put meta systems (like the meta overcalls by misho or the nothing system) those two are fine, the last thing it will do is fastrate people usually not too young people who prefer to enjoy bridge and not to take place in the systems contest, i know DrTood like system inventing, i like it myself, but i know my mom doesnt, and i know most people her age doesnt, i think this will make the game unplayable for those people. All in all if everything is legal it will change the game, some changes for the best some for the worst, imo the sum of all will be less then with regulations. It might be smarter to just make some turneys with regulations and some without regulations.
-
Regulations is a must, without it the game will turn out to be a game of finding wierd system which our opps doesnt know. who need finneses, who need endplays, signaling, or anything that is bridge today, lets just play what they dont know.
