unbalanced diamond methods
msjennifer replied to fromageGB's topic in General Bridge Discussion (not BBO-specific)
Sir I ,personally ,feel that it may be difficult and manage to open a 4414 hand playing this variable diamond method with 5 card major requirement. I only have heard of a LEGHORN DIAMOND system of bidding which may be useful. Our 1NT response shows 6 to10 HCP and denies 3 or more card support for openers major. With 3 card or more support we give an immediate support response depending upon the LTC count (if unbalanced) or else with a GF hand we make a 2/1 bid and show the support later. Many players do play BERGEN responses over 1 of a major. We ,personally, do not like the BERGEN responses. Some also play simple or reverse DRURY in all positions. As the opener if responder bids a suit and we have three cards we support immediately if there is no other better bid THANKS. -
SIRS,if the partnership is playing Precision then SOUTH has an easy 1S opening since the system uses a forcing 1NT response when holding 8-15 HCP (1).However playing a standard system it is a borderline opening hand. Assuming S passes then N does not have a hand worth opening 2H. (unless they are playing GARBAGE weak 2 D/H/S openings.).An 1H opening is far better if N insists on opening at all.(2)Souths 3H raise is an ill thought one. His hand deserves to bid 3C (modified Drury). If playing garbage 2's(3)South considering his fantastic working points PLUS a singleton has a clear cut bid of 4H. when N opens the bidding 2H.The spade suit can be established with so many entries to the hand depending upon Norths holding in that suit.

Sir.the way I understood is mainly the worry about the quality of spade suit responder has.We too play Flannery convention and hence I personally suggest the solution.Since you have decided to play in spades and that too 4S (and certainly why should you not?) a Precision like bid of 3S (And comparable to OGUST bid of 2NT(over a weak 2H/S opening) may prove useful. It enables the responder to describe his hand in FIVE (in this particular hand Four since you have the SK ) steps to describe his hand fully. The values in remaining two suits be considered only if ACE or King, is a possible agreement. And just by the way the opener has only a FIVE losers hand the way WE use the LTC which the ropener guarantees by this 3S bid.( I have read the full book on modified LTC by RK and adapt it our way).THANKS
-
Sirs,i personally would like to make a polite and humble suggestion. We play a MODIFIED JOSEPHINE when the preemption reaches such a high level. Accordingly,'no Josephine no Grand'. Thanks.
-
Sir,I personally feel it is unfair to blame either N or S FOR TOO OBVIOUS REASONS.As regards the score of 75% just assume it was not your day !
-
Sir it is a backwash squeeze.I had posted a similar looking deal where an opponent got squeezed in three suits one of which was the trump suit itself.Therein it was a three card ending.

A very hard bidding problem
msjennifer replied to clinton yu's topic in General Bridge Discussion (not BBO-specific)
Sir,we are familiar with such awkward to rebid hands.I shall rebid 1NT on the first and 2S on the second.Partner also has the same wisdom and is well versed with such situations Thanks. -
2NT in competition?
msjennifer replied to gwnn's topic in General Bridge Discussion (not BBO-specific)
Sir,the two options you provided are quite clear.Your way of saying good/bad hand is OK but that means that opener is free to bid anyway even if he has any minimum hand also..Is 2NT, which as you say good/bad hand , forcing or NOT.?May opener bid even 3NT with a minimum flat hand with a spade stopper.?In order to cater for a weak hand with responder the mandatory 3C bid is abssolutely necessary.which is what a LEBENSOHL 2NT bid is,The 2NT bidder hence can play in 3 of his choice. The way you suggested leaves the whole auction ambiguous .What is the advancer to do do if opener now bids 3C/D/H/S/NT ? IS any of these bids, except 3NT, forcing or not? Sorry but the bidding shall be uneasy unless the mandatory 3C bid by opener with a minimum hand is available.Thanks. -
Sir,the double made before giving an opportunity to E to bid is a strongish TOD .It was absolutely wrong on the part of S to pass. And most certainly the 2D bid in the FIRST SEAT is an objectionable bid.It smells something.

2NT in competition?
msjennifer replied to gwnn's topic in General Bridge Discussion (not BBO-specific)
Sir, the way we play it this 2NT bid is a LEBENSOHL bid asking partner to bid 3 CLUB.Advancer may pass or bid 3D,3H.,all competitive bids ,3S ((with a stopper in spade and 4 cards in hearts) OR 3NT(with a guaranteed spade stopper) Doubler is free to ignore the request to bid 3C and bid as normal with any strong distributional hand. This is why I have voted for "transfer to clubs" Thanks. -
SIR, This one happened to be BOARD 15 ,in AUG.2019 in a casual but high level match [hv=pc=n&s=sa3haqj98dackq953&d=s&v=n&b=15&a=1h3d4d5d]133|200[/hv] YOU HAVE YOUR CHOICE FROM 5H TO 7NT. WHICH ONE IS YOUR CHOICE?
-
Sir,in my personal opinion East hand is not worth passing the 2D by partner. An automatic 2H bid stands out.Furthermore ,suggesting West to double the 4H bid is in my personal opinion an expression just a little short of naiveness.
-
Sir,this is a beautiful yet relatively tough hand at the table. Indeed the late George S Coffin, who wrote the book ""ENDPLAYS in Bridge",would have thoroughly enjoyed this one.Sir,thanks a lot for posting this one.

SOUTH holds J5-AQ43-AK6-AKQ10. This is board 12 0n July 08,2019 in a TEAM match of 4 world class players on the table.West opens 1NT(15/17) and it goes 1NT-P-2C-? Should South PASS or bid..WHAT? If South passes the bidding goes P-2D-P-P. Now what are the conventions or gadgets to deal with this situation. On the table West played in 2D just making..

ATB: overbidders anonymous
msjennifer replied to ahydra's topic in Intermediate and Advanced Bridge Discussion
Sirs.the 1S call is just not believable. The 4S call is the worst of the auction. Its upto the pairs understanding however..We would bid 3S albeit with just a little tremor as the value of the DQ is debatable and the heart suit is not what it should be to provide winners. In such a specific bidding situation we play a 2D overcall as Flannery or a strong diamond suited hand. (5 losers hand with no interest in majors). The TOD is a natural bid with tolerance for all the three remaining suits. There is nothing special in the heart suit to give a preference to a 1H overcall.Playing with a strange partner that will be our choice Thanks. -
Sirs,we shall never open 2S in 3rd seat as the STAR players do against very weak opponents (so to say beginners). It is like Rabada or Cummings bowling bouncers against a team of school children.May be the STAR players enjoy it that way.The beginners DO expect to be taught by STAR players.I have seen quite a few new young ,but enthusiastic, beginners shun the game altogether when such tactics are used against them. The worst part is the STAR players then proceed to ridicule the red faced beginners with sarcastic remarks.NO! we PERSONALLY shall never even think of such tactics. We will never enjoy the game that way.

Giving Up Crawling/Scrambling Stayman
msjennifer replied to RuflRabbit's topic in Natural Bidding Discussion
Sir,yes we do play it the way you have quoted it with some partners who use normal Stayman.Playing with a regular partner our 2D reply to a 2C enquiry sometimes helps us to locate a 4/4 major fit.Oh yes. Our 2D reply to 2C enquiry says that openers hand is NOT maximum. It may or may not contain a four card major. Our 2H reply to 2C says i have both majors but a minimum hand and a 2S reply to 2C enquiry shows a maximum hand with both majors. Our 2C guarantees at least one four card major.and 8+HCP (against a 15/17 NT).We have not come across even a single deal so far where crawling Stayman could have been useful. However I DO like the crawling Stayman and think that it is a good way if used discreetly and intelligently. Thanks. -
Sirs.I am not an expert in NAMING squeezes.I did myself play and make a similar positioned hand and thought that it was a ' CRISS CROSS SIMPLE SQUEEZE ' Kindly correct me if not. Thanks.

Responding to partner's weak two spades
msjennifer replied to pescetom's topic in Intermediate and Advanced Bridge Discussion
Sirs, pardon me for my comment .My bid is 4 Spade .what else?.Afterwards I scrolled down and saw EAST hand.He probably put the DBL card on the table by utter mistake or else he was playing with marbles and not money.
