Sirs, the 1NT response is NORMALLY 6-10,the 2NT bid by opener shows a balanced 18/19 hand showing a desire to play 3NT if responder has 8+ HCP.Responder has already denied a 4 card major. With 6 HCP responder passes as also with a flat 3334 and 6/7 HCP.With say a 3326 hand he may sign of in 3C(xxx-xx-xx-KQ10XXX).With 8+ he will bid 3NT.Kiondly correct me as I am not that expert(?) in SAYC.Opener very rarely may have 4441 hand as suggested. But there is no reason to imagine so every time this sequence occurs.

Sirs.If 2C is a game force it may or may not be a long suit.Partner has bid Diamonds and appears for certain is void in Spades. His club or a heart trick can not run away .So,personally and personally only, I do not visualise any harm in leading a Diamond. My answer to the second question is NO

Insufficient bid
msjennifer replied to bbubbles's topic in General Bridge Discussion (not BBO-specific)
Sirs as per my limited knowledge of the rules.1) TD shall ask if East accepts the insufficient bid made by N, in which case the auction continues normally.(2) If E does not accept the bid then N has to make a sufficient bid IN THE SAME DENOMINATION and if he does so then the auction continues without any penalties.(3) N is not permitted to DOUBLE OR REDOUBLE to replace his insufficient bid..(4)If the chooses to pass then there are lead penalties.E may chose to bar a diamond lead ( in the present case) as long as S retains the lead.OR E may ask S to lead diamond as long as he retains the lead.(5)THE TD may award EW an adjusted score subject to appeal...In my personal humble opinion the concerned TD should be sent forthwith for a refresher course. -
Nowhere To Go
msjennifer replied to FelicityR's topic in Intermediate and Advanced Bridge Discussion
Sirs, 1)With the mentioned vulnerability it is quite possible that the 1NT bid was a gag bid.(psyche) In that case one would have heard something from S. (2)presupposing that 1NT was explained as 9/10 HCP North must realise that partner may have not more than 2/3 HCP.If it so happened that a wrong explanation was given then NS could ask for redress later.(3)I must admit that it was a bit unwise yet tempting to JUST CONSIDER raising to to 3H,considering that E did not redouble to show 9/10 with support/tolerance for the majors.(4)S could have used a 2NT scramble Lebensohl bid had the auction gone 1S-X-2S-P-P-X but its not the case here.(5)W confirmed a long club suit(as opposed to a prepared club) and it is quite possible for him to hold four of either major suit.(6)in light of the bidding it is not unlikely for E to hold length ,but not strength in ,say K10xx in diamonds.(7)Keeping these in mind as also the fact that N has advertised a 16-18 hand with say about 5/6 losers ,S would certainly bid according to his loser count with a six card major suit(which he failed to bid with 2HCP hand and the vulnerability) (8)It ,hence .was quite possible for S to hold just the hand which he actually held,2H being the forced scramble bid.Of course he can have a 4 card suit.(9)N just does not have the WINNERS he is expected(or say supposed) to have for a 3H IMMEDIATE RAISE.It is not at all likely(believing S) or perhaps a bit hopeless to imagine that ten tricks can be made.IMO 3H was a reckless bid.P.S. It is possible to play a REVERSE LEBENSOHL in this auction.(of course this is just my opinion) -
Sirs. After going through the various schemes proposed by the experts a few doubts arise. 1) Does the 3NT bid deny a 5+ card strong major suit as a source of tricks with the rest of the hand any 332 pattern and 8 tricks hoping to get one from partner For example a hand which falls short of a TOD? 2)Can it be a sort of gambling bid based upon a strong long club suit.? 3)Can it be a hand loaded with HCP ,no source of tricks.,possible singleton in one of the outside suits and having AKJX in the preemption suit? I am asking this as there was such a hand in the casual bridge involving world class players some 3/4 days back where the world champion overcalled 3NT.(of course they reached the PAR contract later.) If the answers to one or all of these is YES then in my personal imagination it is well nigh very difficult if not impossible to construct any responses as the level is far too high.IF the 3NT overcall can not be defined so as to fit only one or perhaps two of the possibilities how can anyone devise a majority acceptable and playable scheme of responses for various hand patterns that THE RESPONDER MAY HOLD.Else the responder shall remain stumped most of the time. With sincere apology to all the experts.--msjennifer.

Lead against NT - 2
msjennifer replied to apollo1201's topic in Intermediate and Advanced Bridge Discussion
Sir,It is too much too expect at least two of the three top honors in hearts with partner,But it is not too much to expect spade Ace .My lead is the normal 4th best spade. The contract may be cold on any lead and a small spade may easily prevent the overtricks. If partner holds the Ace we may cash the first 4 tricks and if he has the J and comes in later then again if he started with Jxxx we can gather 4 tricks.NO I will NEVER lead a Heart.(No amounts of argument shall convince me to lead a heart) -
Sirs.perhaps quite a few ,if not all, moderns may open this hand 1NT. And then a 2S overcall would make things rather problematic.Any idea how to proceed acting honest (1NT openers hand does not deny a spade stopper)

What does 4N mean here?
msjennifer replied to nekthen's topic in Intermediate and Advanced Bridge Discussion
Sir,not going by the results ,it is rather unfortunate that partner chose to open 3NT with an Eight card RUNNING suit AND THE HQ outside.Sone may open this hand 1D and some less lucky 4/5 D. -
Matchpoint Decision
msjennifer replied to Trick13's topic in Intermediate and Advanced Bridge Discussion
Sir. if the opponents are well versed with UDCA ,I shall run the Six D and CAK.if the club Qx appears then concede the last trick. And NO I shall not play a heart anytime and go down.( unless the opponents block the spade suit.).I,personally, never underrate the opponents. -
Sirs you have asked about action to be taken by TD ,I believe there was no screen used.If the TD was called before S bid then obviously TD shall ask the bidding to proceed and if he decides that S bid as if there was no pause and also, as is available information about the NS system and development, the bid that S makes is correct then he should allow the bid to be legal. However ,if he decides that South has even say 20 pc.chance for getting influenced and taken a decision pass or bid based upon a conclusion drawn from the pause he may disallow the pass or bid. The score may then be adjusted accordingly and the sides permitted to appeal against his decision.Sir,pardon me please but, this is what I, with my limited knowledge, feel.

What does 4N mean here?
msjennifer replied to nekthen's topic in Intermediate and Advanced Bridge Discussion
Sir,I fully agree with you .These aspects have to be kept in mind when your partner uses this treatment (4NT is to play) or he is a stranger . -
This is like Blue team club auction. My bid is 5NT. Bid 7 if you have both AK of hearts. North could easily have passed 4Cx if he did not have the DA.OR he could just have retreated to 4H.Where are his 17+HCP required for his opening 1C bid? He is certainly showing a better than a minimum hand.by his 4D cue. This bid together with his 5H bid .knowing fully well that I have one honour in hearts.I feel he is worried about club losers in his hand .From the bidding N knows that S has SK)there is no splinter used ) and CA and can not have any thing more as 1S bid has SPECIFICALLY shown 3 controls._May be he has AQx-AKxxxx-AK-xx OR Ax-AKxxxx-AKQ-xx.( If they do not play RKC after 2Cues .) OR AQxx-AKxxx-AK-xx .

Sir,well it just may sound like one.I have not yet read SOLOWAY'S book.I have based it on ideas borrowed from our own Terrence Reese and some more ideas of my own. However thanks for the alert.
-
NO.I shall keep quiet over 1H. I shall double 4H and lead the HK. Cards can be arranged so that ALL I get is thee heart tricks.I never ever think "what if the cards are distributed this and that." That sure is a pessimistic attitude.

Difference of Opinion
msjennifer replied to FelicityR's topic in Intermediate and Advanced Bridge Discussion
Sir,I fully agree with your 2S response.I shall bid the same but our treatment over 3C shall be cue the ace if there is one. -
Sir.we use this same (but NOT SOLOWAY) jump bid approach i.e.1D-2H-3D-4H.Our first 2H bid shows either a slam oriented hand with diamond fit (expressed as 1D-2H-3D-3S/4C) OR a game going single suited BALANCED hand clarified by 1D-2H-3D-3NT. OR a game going single suited with a SOLID suit e.g.1D-2H-3D-3H .OFCOURSE ,I hurry to clarify that this is the basic approach and there are one or more bids like cue bids etc which anyone may develop to ones liking.THANKS

Difference of Opinion
msjennifer replied to FelicityR's topic in Intermediate and Advanced Bridge Discussion
Sirs/Miss/Madam, we use the precision type of responses over 2C standard opening.Since there are other ways to express game value hands by reverse bids, jump shifts ,splinter bids, et al,we open 2C on a hand with the following conditions 1) a balanced hand having 23+HJCP and no trump pattern with at least one partial guard in every suit.5+ honour tricks. OR 2)A major suit singlesuiter with 5plus honour tricks and 9 plus winners,OR 3) a minor suit singlesuiter hand with 5 plus honour tricks and 10 plus winners. WE use the following responses 1)2D either 0 t0 7 HCP( OR less than 1 and half honour tricks) 2)2H/S WITH 8 plus HCP and 5 plus bid suit. 3C/D with 8 plus HCP and 5 plus suit headed by at least Q. 3) 2NT with 8 or 9 HCP and a balanced hand with a guard in at least 3 suits or 10 plus HCP balanced but may lack a guard in sometimes 2 suits, Openers further bids are natural but one can use precision system bids also. However,i humbly request yourself not to consider these as my "suggestions" and I do not insist this treatment as very ideal. With strange partners I use the usually used standard treatment with the 2D waiting bid etc. THANKS. -
Sir mikeh, may I make a polite humble suggestion" SILENCE IS GOLDEN" ,at least in this instance.. Sir,I get bored and tired when my student asks me" Miss, but what if your partner holds this and that.?" Pardon me ,but many a times one forgets (?) to remember that in a partnership game with two clever and perhaps cunning opponents one has to think much ahead as one does ,say ,in a game of cricket.,Competitive bidding is such that ones basic systems is out.Whatever you suggest ,even in life, there are many others who will not like any sensible actions that one suggests/makes and keep arguing just for the heck of it.And as I said , in such cases "SILENCE IS GOLDEN" THANKS.

Perhaps After Thought Bids.
-
Sirs, when I had a look at the hand and the bidding I felt that a double and then a very pessimistic 2S bid is unrealistic. After RHO had shown an opening hand it is very difficult to visualise a little slam unless one has an array of some artificial bids.It is easy to visualise that if one doubles and then finds stuck over 4H,one is going to bid 4S. If playing a TOD over 2H with LEBENSOHL would not help either ,One just needs the CJ10x to score 4S.Hence ,in my personal logic, one simply bids 4S and not a TOD over 1H.(Again if LHO ,just imagine, trap- passes the TOD and partner bids a forced 2D one is back to square one.).
-
Sir,just as a matter of information I ,forward the responses in Precision by Beladonna. 1)2NT-3S is a transfer to 3NT after which responder bids a)4C to show 5/5 in minors, b)4D shows 5/5 in D/H .c)4H shows 5/5 in H/S and d)4S shows 5/5 in S/C. .(2) 2NT-4C shows5/5 in C/H and 2NT-4D Shows 5/5 in D/S. I,politely, make it absolutely clear that I do not claim these are/are not very satisfactory bids.I also request you NOT to initiate a debate on the merits/demerits. Playing the STANDARD system with the transfers we have found the 2NT-3S bid to show 5 S and 4 H , enables tho opener to choose 3NT/4H/4S contract as per his hand.We have found it easy and practicable for those who are in the Bridge-student stage.

Another Awkward Hand to Bid
msjennifer replied to FelicityR's topic in Intermediate and Advanced Bridge Discussion
Sirs ,I personally, think that you have summed it up nicely. The 3C preference is a non forcing bid as everyone knows and that is where one belongs.I am flabbergasted when the 2D SIMPLE reverse(and not a jump shift ) can have 20/21 HCP and yet not game forcing when at least 5 good or more HCP are known with P. I also learnt some interesting strategies when partner opens 1C,IF indeed partner has a three card strong heart holding and feels he can make 4 hearts opposite a weak 5 carder suit which partner naturally did not bid AND else he can make 4C he will bid 3H anyway.A 2H bid will suggest a six carder playable rebiddable suit when the 2D BID has at least temporarily suggested a minor 2 suited hand.Rather than contemplating if he has this this and that it is my opinion that a preference be given just now .Partner ,if interested in showing a game forcing OR an invitational hand shall show it if he has this or that/.. -
Another Awkward Hand to Bid
msjennifer replied to FelicityR's topic in Intermediate and Advanced Bridge Discussion
Sirs,My bid now is 3C.1)Opener has shown a minor two suited hand AND that too with a reversing strength 2).He has not opened the bidding 2C so he does expect some help in the minors and at the same time 3) he does not want/expect WASTED honours outside. He has shown 4) that even with a minimumm response with 5/6 HCP he is prepared to play in 3C.Now I do not wish to rebid 2H with such a poor 5 card suit.NO.IT CERTAINLY IS NOT AN AUTOMATIC BID.My DKJ10 are a golden possession which I have not revealed at all.Another clarification asking bid from him and we may be shooting for a little slam.I expect a hand with not more than one loser in the majors. My post is coming after the hand has been disclosed but my decision has been based AS IF I HAVE NOT SEEN IT.Thanks N.B.We play the 2c opening as promising 5+ honour tricks an asset which will draw blood if opponents make the mistake of competing beyond our GAME BID. I do not give any value to the fact that opponents are silent. -
When not to takeout double inSAYC
msjennifer replied to johnblu's topic in Natural Bidding Discussion
Although there are the so called 14 HCP the hand has following so to say "defects" 1)No decent, even a lead directing, suit to overcall. 2)ONLY two winners. 3)Eight losers even if a suit fit is found. 4)Neither the length nor the strength to make a TOD. A quiet PASS stands out.remembering that partner is alive if LHO too PASSES. There shall be an opportunity to take appropriate action or pass the next round. Perhaps the only criterion it satisfies is the not very logical Rule of 20.
