Play or Bidding?
msjennifer replied to The_Badger's topic in Intermediate and Advanced Bridge Discussion
It requires a very good mental ability ,physical fitness and healthy evironment if one wants to reach greater heights not only in bridge but in all individual or team games. An expert bridge player playing in an international final in bridge spends the same energy, as an expert cardiologist doing a heart surgery operation lasting 3 hours ,when playing 20 tough deals.Joe Root cannot become a Hamman even if he wishes to! And vice versa of course. It is indeed very difficult to progress from an advanced to expert level let alone world class as the other factors like social obligations etc .need to be fulfilled also.(more particularly for the ladies).Taking Bridge ,in isolation, bidding, gadgets and conventions, defence ,playout and all the strategies to be used to suit the type of contest are equally important as also the temperament.P.S.please do not consider this as a lecture. -
Who should bid Spades?
msjennifer replied to dickiegera's topic in Intermediate and Advanced Bridge Discussion
I feel it easy to make or suggest bids to suit the hands after one knows the result.Give these hands in a bidding contest and see what happens 1H overcall is not that bad an overcall considering that both LHO and P have passed once so one may find suitable cards and few useful values with P.For example P may be holding LHO cards .I do not agree with the suggestion that P shd have responded 1S as his DK has very doubtful value as also the spade suit is a quite weak and only four carded. P should have passed.I also do not think that an SOS redouble is advisable with only two rags in club suit.We treat this hand as "bad luck" brought about by the violent distribution .and forget .The existing gadgets, in my personal opinion ,are not good enough . -
I do not wish to make any comments on the bidding since I am far from being an expert. However I have my doubts. 1) If a 2 C opening is 100% forcing to game how can the eligibility be brought down when the hand is not fit for giving 8 or more winners. 2) If the 2C bid was based on the club suit then when positive bid of 3H was heard why he did not bid 4C instead of 3NT ? 3) Aftter a 3NT bid showing a balanced or semi balanced hand with no heart fit is it not too much to expect ( or ask) a 4C bid on 4 tram tickets? It is easy to say yes when one knows all 26 cards. If this responding hand with the given auction is given to many players how many will bid 4C and not 4D?.Suppose there was no intervention and responder had bid 2H won't he have bid 3C? Why not 4C now? 4)Is 4NT a sign off or simple /RKC (in diamond)Blackwood considering the strong "almost slam ambitioned" bidding that has taken place so far?

Responding to multi with both M
msjennifer replied to VixTD's topic in Intermediate and Advanced Bridge Discussion
A series of two articles titled"countering the multi 2D" were published in the Bridge World magazine written by 'Eric Crowhurst way back in 1982 "(and that is ten years before I was born). We use the same with addition of lebensohl .and a modification or two. These articles were handed down to me by my father and we have found them to be very useful.Hence,I partially agree to disagree. After LHO in first seat opened 2D ,his partner doubled for take out,RHO bid 2HeartsPass or correct). My father bid 3D,natural and 10 plus to comfortably reach 5D which he made very easily.I do expect the opponents, who play regularly ,to have defence to weak multi 2D.! In my short long run in Bridge ,I have experienced this and hence the comments.Thx. -
Responding to multi with both M
msjennifer replied to VixTD's topic in Intermediate and Advanced Bridge Discussion
Always 2Heart. But I hate multi 2D opening. We found that 2D weak is of no use as a preempt.I like to use it to show any 4441 hand with 17 to 24 HCP.( The Blue Club bid) .With my regular partner I play 2D Flannery. The given hand is not good enough to respond 2S. I do not like the idea to include a strong minor hand in the multi 2D.More confusion for ourselves than the opponents. -
My bid is 2 Diamond.I am not brave enough to bid 2NT which this hand with the given vul does not qualify.Add two minor suit Knaves in place of one small in each minor and my bid will be 2NT.

Don't read the 4th question before answering 1st 3
msjennifer replied to sakuragi's topic in Interesting Bridge Hands
Very fair enough argument..Redouble is absurd if not silly. -
Don't read the 4th question before answering 1st 3
msjennifer replied to sakuragi's topic in Interesting Bridge Hands
If I never thought of bidding 6C earlier then I shall simply Pass 5Cx So questions 2,3,4 are irrelevant for me. -
We never suppress a 5 card major. We never open a hand with a 5 card major as 1/2 NT.A five card minor can be opened in a 1/2 NT hand.So the under mentioned method is not applicable to hands with a five card major.Very briefly, we play these methods. 2Nt(20-22)-3C (3 or more points,)Relay. 3D Shows either both majors or one major and 3-3-3 pattern 3H shows Hearts and a minor 3S shows Spades and a minor. 3NT shows a four card minor and 333 or both minors and 3/2(or 2/3) or a 5 card minor. 2NT-3D/H are usual transfers to 3H/S but with no slam interest. 2NT-3S Slam interest in two touching suits 2NT- 3NT To play. 2NT-4C Slam interest in Hearts and Clubs 2NT- 4D S lam interest in Spades and Diamonds Over 2NT there are no transfer bids for minors Personally,I prefer to play Baron over 2NT.3D/H are usual transfers and 3S shows 5Spades and 4 Heard 3NT is transfer to either minor.Hence If responder wishes to play in 3NT he reaches that via 3C. Those interested in the further development of the auction are requested to see pages 138 to 142 of Precision and Super Precision Bidding by Belladonna and Garozzo. Thanks a lot and have a nice weekend.

Bid after opponents open 4 Spades
msjennifer replied to dickiegera's topic in Intermediate and Advanced Bridge Discussion
I shall pass with East hand and make a penalty double with West hand .There are 3 defensive tricks and nothing wrong in assuming East may provide a trick or two.In the given hands if the heart Ace brings down a singleton King,or you are able to pin the Jack,,depending upon your choice ,then we consider it as hard luck. We play cooperative dbles over 3S and above preemption by opponents. (.Partner normally will not bid anything but pass for penalties). -
Pick an opening lead?
msjennifer replied to Kaitlyn S's topic in General Bridge Discussion (not BBO-specific)
A small spade.No problem ,at least,for me. -
Misplay this hand with me
msjennifer replied to Kaitlyn S's topic in Intermediate and Advanced Bridge Discussion
Not knowing any thing about the spade situation,I would have finessed hearts. That way the SK remains safe.If a diamond comes back I shall win the Ace and see if hearts break .If they do not then hope that W holds rhe SA.(or east the DK). -
Leaving aside the vulnerability there are two points which indicate to a PASS. 1) The LHO bid is 3C and not 3/4 S.Also the RHO bidding 4S and not just 3S. 2) Partners inability to take any positive action over 3C. Coming back to the hand ,it is not wise to bid anything like 5C,4NT or Double. A Pass is clearly indicated. And after all this, the adverse vulnerability also poses a big question mark on any other bid than Pass.

Slow bidding options
msjennifer replied to A2003's topic in General Bridge Discussion (not BBO-specific)
in my opinion,North does not have a hand which warrants a 4NT Blackwood bid, leave alone the hesitation by South. If it's an established partnership,South would certainly have cue bid an Ace if he had one, with a suitable hand.North has no other bid than a simple Pass. -
play for 1 loser
msjennifer replied to dickiegera's topic in Intermediate and Advanced Bridge Discussion
I shall follow the restricted choice principle ( may not work always).Hence I shall follow with a small one hoping to see the King appear. -
One, three or four?
msjennifer replied to shyams's topic in Intermediate and Advanced Bridge Discussion
I voted in favour of "other".To open the hand 1 H I shall require one Ace to be added to hand. I shall ask the question to be changed by replacing North by South.North hand is not given. If this is a hand which North held then if I am in 1or 2 seat I shall Pass.In the 3 or 4 th seat I shall open 4H . -
The sequences shown here are a matter of partnership style and agreements.A point to consider is what is the sequence 1D-1S-2H-P-? Is this a forcing situation or not? Depends upon the agreement. We play this sequence as passable (not forcing). We play the way 'The Badger' has described, but its all depending on your agreements.Certainly ,some opponent will ask "what's the difference in the two sequences as you play it ?" and one should have a clear answer for that.

How high to show support here?
msjennifer replied to el mister's topic in Intermediate and Advanced Bridge Discussion
I shall PASS.The hand is nothing but tram tickets. No HCP,no ruffing values.I can't provide even a solitary defensive trick. All these mean a normal pass without pause or hesitation. -
I shall bid 4NT .If 4 S and 5H are both making but 5 of a minor chosen by my partner is going down then I shall be looking for another partner.

How can I search for threads older than one year?
msjennifer replied to silvr bull's topic in BBO Support Forum
Thanks a lot for the valuable directions to be taken to get such older informations. -
As stated,Law 20 f clearly states everything needed to be done in such situations the TD must be called and he has the powers authorized to give the decision. If either side does not accept his decision then they are free to make a written appeal signed by both of the pair to the Appeals Committee for action. If no such appeals Committee exists then the organizing committee have to temporarily form one from among the impartial experts available of 3 (or more odd number) This Committee then gives their decision which then is binding (at least for that session ) on all.

We use the SST(Short Suit Try) and LST (Long Suit Try) tries as were published in two articles published in the Bridge World monthly magazine published more than 40 years back.A copy was given me by my teacher. We have found them excellent. They can be used also on a single raise major suit bid like 1S-p-2S-p or 1H-p-2H-p wherein responder having the inquired requirements can bid game and lacking these sign off in 3 of agreed major.
