Frequently bypass 4+ diamonds question
msjennifer replied to JT23456's topic in Intermediate and Advanced Bridge Discussion
Personally,I do not like to byepass one diamond (4carder)If the four card major is only equally strong only.So If I hold xx-Q10xx--Q10xx-AQx I do respond 1D as later on a competitive negative double is available (if opponents bid spades). However, If the hand has less than 10 HCP and is flat and with 9 or 10 losers, I opt go for the major as that hand warrants only one bid( ( say,the club K replaces the AQ in the given hand) However ,when my hand has only 8 or less losers ,2 winners and deserves to make 2 bids I start with a 1D response. As also, based on these conditions I never byepass a 5 carder D suit headed by A ,K or Q.as that is handy in a NT contract if opener is worried about Diamonds. Finally ,in short, it depends upon the virtues and values of the hand -

Why bid Stayman with no 4 card major?
msjennifer replied to JT23456's topic in Intermediate and Advanced Bridge Discussion
Suppose you hold KQ4,,7,J9854,A1065 you naturally are worried about the Heart suit .So you bid 2C and if opener bids 2 H you can bid 3NT .If opener turns up with 8432 hearts then you may go down but at least you have done your job.The following is not applicable to this hand. We use the bid of 2NT as a transfer to diamonds.and hence can not use that as an invitational bid. However we use 2S when we have no 4card major but have a stopper in both majors .If partner bids 2NaT showing a minimum hand we pass when our intention was to invite. If opener bids 3Clubs showing a maximum hand then we bid 3NT or pass if that was our intention to play in 3C.Of course this has a slight drawback in that we can not use 3C as Super acceptance of club -
In a general sense the simple Blackwood is used where the suit fit has not been established. However when the fit has been established it is wiser to use the RKCB.Any player who desires to improve has to know both and how and when to use the Simple BW or RKCB.I would like to say that Exclusion Blackwood,The Spiral ,Gerber and even the good old Culbertson asking bids are worthwhile as welll as the Quanitative No Trump bids which are very useful and help improve ones confidence in bidding a hand..Some pairs also use a jump 4C/D ,when it will not be confused as a Splinter or Cue bid,as RKCB to keep the level low.One can choose to learn and use any or all of these. Personally,I feel that, with the opponent bidding diamonds and one not knowing the full distribution of Openers hand it is exuberant and dangerous to suddenly double jump to 4Heart holding xxx in diamonds.

What's my best bid?
msjennifer replied to jerdonald's topic in Intermediate and Advanced Bridge Discussion
1)A TOD and then a suit bid at 3level shows 16 /18 and is not passable when partner has shown 9/11 HCP .A 9 /15 hand will just overcall 1D . 2)I have already said that my bid will be 4C and not 3D. -

Yes.Quite So.Though a bit aggressive in light of the bidding so far. -

My answers to the 2 questions are as under. 1)The TOD does not show Four cards in spades.May be 3 only 2)The 2S bid with the given hand is nothing but overexhuberance . -

Sorry, but 16/17 HCP(mark the wordsHCP) are not shown by a 4C bid.Once the fit has been established the number of losers (LTC) comes into play.4C says that I have good support,I have a void or Singleton in the splintered suit AND at least a second round control in the remaining two suits and only a maximum of 5 Loers as played in hearts. It requests the partner to REVALUE his hand in light of all the given information. In the hand described by you later the responder has NINE losers and so he just signs of in 4H as 18 minus 14(9 Plus 5)=4 . -

With this hand he will sign off in 4H as his CA is useless. -

Although 4hearts is a quantitative bid it does not express the full value of your hand with only 5 losers as played in hearts.Partner can value his hand better if 1) either bid 4C on the wayto 4H or 2)bid 3D and later bid Hearts had the D suit been a wee bit better .Personally,I shall prefer to bid 4C which some may find unpalatable. -
The 2C opening bid on this hand is wrong in any Standard natural system.Perhaps this hand is opened 2H in ACOL system.Acolytes May possibly easily reach the 6D contract.( However this does not mean that one switches to ACOL) The normal opening shall be 1H.However unless previously discussed it is difficult to bid or pass over 4Sx.If discussed then pass or 4NT will be bid as per that agreement.(4NT will be choose a minor if short in hearts and having a 4 + card minor),

Since 3C is GF( or at least we play it that way) then considering the possibility that partners hand may be a double suiter and looking at the Ace of Hearts ,the CQ ,the DA and SK I would have bid 3D allowing partner to describe his hand further..I shall ,on the given hand and the given bidding never bid a discouraging 3NT.

We Play Ogust. 3H shows. 9/10 HCP.and aa weak 6card suit.( Well,we knew the suit was weak already) So he can have 4HCP in Spade AND 5/6 outside.I am sure any 5HCP will be enough for 6NT. 2S—2NT 3H**6NT

This one sounds quite similar to “Sylvia” stories published in Bridge World many years ago.Welcome to the forum.

This forum is for intermediates and advanced and I do not pose to be an advanced one.The OP has just asked the way to bid this hand and accordingly I have given my system of bidding.I had strictly mentioned that this is the way the bidding will go IF (and this is a big IF)the opponent are silent. However If the opponents intervene then then I do not mind forgetting this board or many more like this where opponents put the S ystem to a ditch.FULL STOP. -

The well bid slam went down on a club lead.A club was led to the Ace and a club ruff meant down one of the top.
