3rd Seat Weak Opening
msjennifer replied to captyogi's topic in General Bridge Discussion (not BBO-specific)
Sir,I fully agree with you.And I hope there should be no problem for the TD in dealing with such instances if a strict enforcement of zero tolerance is followed. -
What does a bid of 4C/D mean if bid directly over 3C ? Could it be suggesting both majors with longer H/S respectively?
-
Could anyone help me as to how to register as a substitute in the new mobile format of BBO? I use an apple I-Pad.
-
I shall play for double squeeze as has been already described earlier by others
-
Finally,I did mimic the great Garozzo,my idol bridge master.
-
Do you mean to suggest that responder can not have AQX in spades when he responds 2C over a 1D opening? is he going to bid 2S over a rebid Of 2D? If so,it is stretching far. unless he knows that you hold a good five card spade suit!
-
I ,entirely, agree that LOTT gives a correct assessment in almost all cases. It is therefore easy to use since practically all advanced ( but unknown) players know it.The treatment given by me “ May” be worth considering in an established partnership.
-
A very pleasing, nice and bold attitude down yonder.I wish I lived there and bid “ one for the road “ perhaps.
-
We never suppress a rebiddable major suit headed by at least two of the four top honors.and would have opened the hand 1Spade as there are easy rebids,Oening one diamond and if,partner 2 clubs what now.?a tame 2 Diamonds? Or 2S considered by many a slight overbid with only a meagre 12 HCP? However,in the present auction I “ personally “ feel that a 3 NT bid by North is just not there,A 2Heart bid which we play as “at least game forcing with a desire to play in NT or just asking opener to describe his hand if unbalanced “ will perhaps result in a heart void cue bid from North in a good partnership and they may reach the Grand in due course.

I guess almost all players with your hand would have passed. This raises a big point. Is , whether there is no difference between a vulnerable overcall in the 2nd Seat and that in the 4th seat.My feeling is there should be.We do take this difference into account and assuming a three card fit,we count the losers. In the given South hand there are 6 losers only and the hand is much better than a normal overcall which the partner will assume to have 7or 8 losers and not knowing whether it is a constructive hand or a lead directing overcall belonging to the second category. The South hand is just a wee bit short of a TOD and bidding spades later. However, we have a solution we bid 2S as an “ intermediate “ bid falling between an Acol opening of 2S and a simple 1S overcall,( I know quite a few will give this treatment a thought and the rest pooh pooh it).We have found that this works,Inthe present hand which N holds since the support is QJxx the hand has 8 losers and for us it is an easy 4S bid.Whether to double 5C/H or Pass is left to South. The EW pair has really created a genuine problem for the North. It is just too difficult for him to decide his bid with the present “Usual” definition of an one level overcall by South.

They bid 3m over your 1NT
msjennifer replied to Trick13's topic in Intermediate and Advanced Bridge Discussion
We never will play 10/12 NT. That aside ,game prospects are absolutely none on both the responders hands. We MAY score 3 H/S on the second hand but may go down also. As nothing has been mentioned about vulnerability ,it will usually be wise to Pass on both these,Some May bid 3D on the first and 3H on the second.Good Luck to them as opener may have only xx in the bid suit. And really speaking how much value has the CQ in the the first hand.? 3 and 4 level interventions over a weak NT as above pose many blind problems unless it is a fixed partnership and have the gadgets to handle such situations. -
A 2 Heart rebid does not” guarantee “six hearts in Acol original.Reese and others made many modifications in that system,A book titled “Acol in the nineties” is also available. However, the system faded later on and is hardly played anywhere except in England these days.

what is 2nt?
msjennifer replied to LBengtsson's topic in Intermediate and Advanced Bridge Discussion
It appears that responder was playing drury and the opener was playing reverse drury. A rare unlikely possibility is he opened on a four card Spade suit .The way I was taught and read drury, when playing reverse drury a rebid of the original major shows a minimum hand and all other bids are natural guaranteeing a good normal opening hand 13 plus HCP and not more than 7 losers as played in spades.Whereas the normal drury bid the Openers 2D rebid shows a sub opening hand and is ambiguous as played by a large number of expert players. Well, they have the further addition to drury and that is 1S-2C shows a hand which has a three card support and 1S-2D shows a hand with 4 card support. -
Since looking at partners hand is not allowed every “practically”oriented player ( and that includes me) will most certainly end up in 4H ..And that is that! Whether it makes or not is altogether different.
-
Robots are known fo overbid /misbid.So Playing With Robos who do not know the Drury convention, it is better to pass this poor 11pointer in 1/2 seat and perhaps in all seats. As regards the play the DA lead is certainly a singleton lead as it is a Robot in that seat.So Playing Spade Ace and another spade and then “ flying” with CK would certainly have fooled the Robo.
-
I fully agree.

And why should we “presume” that he may be unbalanced? If indeed he has one he shall certainly make a checkback in which case one can easily jump to four heart. We don’t IMAGINE that partner “ likely” has ruffing values! And if one has not discussed how to bid further on this sequence then the best bid is 3H. However such a suit jump only shows that the opener has a SIX loser hand as played in a heart contract whereas this hand has 7 losers. It is possible that partner has a 9 loser hand and does not know what to do over 3H, with a 3433 pattern.Of course then it becomes easier to blame him if his bid proves to be disastrous!
-
A balanced hand with stoppers in all suits, and 7 losers if played in hearts .2NT describes the hand perfectly So I shall rebid 2NT every time with such a hand,There are no ruffing values at all.So a nine tricks contract will ,in my opinion ,must be exploited and suggested to partner.2NT does show18/19 balanced.

A two suit squeeze with a threatened stepping stone.

Before playing any card to the first trick there are only 10 tricks. They become 11 only As and when the declarer plays the HQ and the Jack appears. The plan thought of with 10 tricks originally changes and before that the count needs to be rectified. It can happen ONLY if opponents take the club Acs on the second round of clubs.Declarer does not KNOW that the HJ will fall on the first round of hearts and has to plan accordingly.
-
The declarer has only 10 top tricks. He has to find 2 extra tricks. In order to think of a three suit simple or double squeeze he will have to rectify the count unless he is thinking of something like a squeeze without count. As it is ,expert defenders are not going to let him do it.They will duck the second club and he is back to square one. So he has to take it on from there. Not at all easy ! My answer to your second question is:ALWAYS. Against ordinary opponents I might consider the finesse in hearts ,but as I said that will be ,with some trepidation.( if they duck the second club)
-
This 2NT overcall is simply horrible to say the least.Pass is the best bid..
-
Fourth best heart.
-
I fully agree.Playing Super Precision opener can not make a splinter bid.In that system ,as well as others ,controls are shown as you said.
