I guess "Eastern Scientific" is 2/1. Then there are only two possibilities: Either I don't know enough about 2/1 or ..........................

player 2 and player 3 should TD?

Rite Let me make a speach for 12-14 NT in old fashioned KS-style The biggest advantage of 12-14 NT besides preempt value is that minor-suit openings show either strength (15+ when balanced) or distribution (5-4 63 7 .. and 4441). Playing 12-14 NT you must be aware, that 1) you are playing against the room. You play most NT-contracts from the other side 2) it is dangerous for you because you may be doubled 3) it is very dangerous for opponents to intervene, because they may doubled. 3) You need a scientific rescue-sytem after 1NT X ?? 4) You must be excellent declarer and defenders due to this close decisions. IMO 12-14 NT is a great weapon. It fits perfectly with inverted minors and all modern gadgets after 1NT opening. It is no problem to play 2/1 with 12-14 NT. The minimum rebids in NT must be revised. Imo 2/1 is built on the good old "Kaplan-Sheinwold". I would teach 12-14 NT even beginners 1) they would the according rebids at once 2) Many folks are not used to play against weak NT and have no weapons against. That gives you a tactical advantage. I played Kaplan-sheinwold even in high competition with great success. regards Al

Hi Kathryn, I invented this thread for Billies, to see, what is the experts opinion. Al

This poll is related to that I created about black 2-suiters. Bidding goes 1♠ pass 2♦ pass 3♣. Does the 3♣ bid shows extra values? IMO: In SAYC it shows 16+ for sure. Can it be minimum in 2/1? Should discussed with a regular pd. Cheers Al

How to open a weak black-2-suiter?
xx1943 replied to xx1943's topic in Intermediate and Advanced Bridge Discussion
When I was young I opened 1♠ whenever I had 5 even a 5017 and 5008 I never got. But now I'm old I open sometimes 1♣; sometimes 1♠. Some of the above posts are very interesting, when to do. Ben's deliberations about vulnerablility. Or the question if the hand must be weak or strong to qualify for 1♣. I'm very interested in the question, if 1♠ p 2♦ p 3♣ shows extra strength or even extras bey declarer. IN SAYC it is a high reverse and shows 16+. What about 2/1. I'll start a new poll. Many thks for all the interesting ideas. Al -
Playing TD cannot come to your table. He is fixed in his seat. :P Just for fun, Indy, 4 boards, unclocked and adjustments after finish is ok with playing TD imho. Every time I created such a tourney, it took only 1 minute to find enough guys, who liked this format. There was never acomplaint at all and no Yellow had a problem with such a tourney. Al

Sorry there has been a mistake in creating this poll. The two first alternates are compressed together. I cannot correct this :P and asked Ben to do so. Hi all, would like to hear your suggestions how to handle a weak 5/5 in blacks with SAYC or 2/1. [hv=d=s&v=n&s=saqxxxhxxdxcajxxx]133|100|Scoring: IMP[/hv]. A strong hand with 16+ HCP is sure worth a high reverse. I would open 1♣ playing SAYC under most circumstances. Sometimes a 1 ♠ is more preemptive. I would open 1♠ and rebid 2♠ playing 2/1, because partner had promised a second bid and I can show my clubs later. If I had opened 1 ♠, my rebid over 2♦(♥) is always 2 ♠. Btw. Kaplan Sheinwold would open 1♠ and rebid 2♠ even after responders 2♣, showing the minimum first and fit later. I hope your discussion will be very instructive for our Billies. I'm looking forward your replies. Regards Al

Hi Billies. Try this one.

Whoops..... get me a ladder so I get down off this silly horse. Hi but you are 100% rite, Ben. You line ensures 11 tricks, if hearts are 2/1 and diamonds 2/2 or LHO has the single A. 7♥ + 2♠-ruffs + 2♦ and you make 9 tricks against a bad distribution in the reds 6♥+2♠(ruffs) + 1♦. My suggested line Draw trumps and establish diamonds, needs the same breaks to win, but against bad breaks I'll make only 7 tricks. 6♥+1♦ Your line is correct (as ever :P ), Ben Regards Al -
Hi Ben, Hi Andreas, many thanks for your help. I can save the hands to my PC and open it there; works fine. But if I try to open in my hands it doesn't work. The days before it always worked. Computers are idiots. Windows 98. MS-IEX 6.0.2800.1106 Cheers Al

Hi Andreas, thanks for your help. I.e. this link opens a blank form if I click on it. Link to my hands

Hi all, If I try to open a MOVIE in "My hands", there is only the plain form without any cards or bids. I can save the movie and open from my HD and all is ok. Is this only my problem? Is my software anyhow spoiled. Is there anyone, who made the same experience? tks all. Regards Al

Hi all, Is there a full-text-search-engine implemented in this forum? I.e. can I search to find all posts, which include in their text the phrase e.g. "linfile". Or ist the only possibility to ask Ben? Thanks Al PS.: If know I can look at "All posts made bay this member" and apply the windows-search-engine to this site. But to do this I must know, who authored the post I'm looking for.

Very good idea to autoplay the last trick. I often saw, that discussion began and the last card was not played. :( Maybe this is to complicated for the software. Al

Hi Billies. Try this one.

Hi all You must guess the diamonds rite, so there is no need to go after spade ruffs. It is questionable if better lead ♦q or ♦9. Probaly the Q, as Flame explained. But my "EXPERT" partner led a low diamond to the K. Beginners guide to suit combinations
xx1943 replied to jillybean's topic in Intermediate and Advanced Bridge Discussion
Hi Ben Many thks for the hint. The links are made to the travellers not the hands, as proof, how many folks went wrong. Really important imo, that Billies know, how to handle this basic-combinations. Regards Al -
Hi Billies, this hand I played with a pickup-partner calling himself an expert and he misplayed the hand awfully. I'm sure most of you will do better. :) Advanced+ please answer with hidden text only: ;) [hv=d=e&v=n&w=s2h765dk87653c865&e=sk94hakt9432dq94c]266|100|Scoring: IMP[/hv] West North East South - - 1♥ 1♠ Pass 2♠ 4♥ 4♠ 5♥ Pass Pass Dbl Pass Pass Pass CK C5 C7 H2 HA HQ H5 H8 HK S5 H6 HJ How do you think your chances are now? What card do you play from your hand? Look here how my partner went down: Here the hidden solution: Sincerly Al

Beginners guide to suit combinations
xx1943 replied to jillybean's topic in Intermediate and Advanced Bridge Discussion
HI think you shld add 2 more: [hv=n=sxx&w=s&e=s&s=saxxxxx]399|300|South has only 1 side entry, which cannot attacked at once.[/hv] This one is clear: Play small from both hands in the first round. Both follwing hands I inserted in my Training for beginners and intermediates and many declarers didn't found the rite line. :) Do all Billies know, that this is just the same:[hv=n=sxx&w=s&e=s&s=saxxxxx]399|300|South has only 1 side entry, which cannot attacked at once.[/hv] I guess they do not all. board 1 An how about this: [hv=n=sxx&w=s&e=s&s=saxxxxx]399|300|South has only 1 side entry, which cannot attacked at once.[/hv] board 3 Al -
Very good idea. B) ty Marc
-
Hi Marc the diagramm cannot be correct. West has 6 cards left, North only 4. South only 5. And South must have a small diamond, to be able to take the diamond finesse. Maybe the hand is like this? Dealer: ????? Vul: ???? Scoring: Unknown[/hv] There is no way to make 6 tricks (I even can't see how to make 5) on this hand and TD should decide accordingly. Cheers Al
-
Great idea. Would be much help for TD, if applied sensible. I would appreciate this tool so much. It were my first wish to UDAY, if I had one free. :D This should be the ultima ratio, when it is not possible to adjust the hand otherwise. Nooooooooooooooo. not automatically. B) Only when no other adjustt possible and it is not clear, who is responsible for the delay. Sure, but it works better, as when TD must give Ave- to both, because he does not know, who played so slow. cheers Al

Most outrageous bid you ever made?
xx1943 replied to whereagles's topic in General Bridge Discussion (not BBO-specific)
Last month in our local club: [hv=d=n&v=n&s=sxxxhqdakjxxcakjx]133|100|Scoring: MP[/hv] Partner opens red against white 4 hearts. We are playing no namyats. RHO bids 4 spades. I had a good feeling, that LHO was eager to sacrifice and besides pd could have singleton spade. So I bid like a flash a confidently 6 hearts. LHO not to my surprise 6 spades, whixh I gratefully doubled for 1700 :) 1430 had been 100% too.[hv=d=n&v=n&n=sxhakj10xxxxdxxcxx&w=sqxxxhxxdxxxcxxxx&e=sakjxxhxxdq10xcqxx&s=sxxxhqdakjxxcakjx]399|300|Scoring: MP[/hv] -
Hi Ben what about a responsive X showing exactly 3 hearts with an honour? Al

1) 4♣ 2) pass Nothing more to say. I agree with Justin and Chamaco. Al
