This is funny. "Alternativlos" ( no alternative ) has been choosen to the Ugliest Word of The Year 2010 in Germany today. Why? Because Merkel und her stuff used it xxxxxxx times to explain the public opinion these uncounted €-billions she put in the various financial bail-outs und tried so to cut any discussion about it.

This is the exactly situation at the moment and Merkel's dilemma. Her goverment is in troubles and knowing how unpopular any additional euro-bail-out in german public opinion is, she tends to sit this problem out, I cant imagine she will make a "big moves" in this case, she tries to play the role of the "Iron Lady". Yes she takes a pragmatic approach, but primarly in view of retention of the own political power. Merkel looks afraid to the german taxpayers/voters. If the polls will deal worse, I would not wonder, she will have to say "I want my money back"(Margret Thatcher) at some point.

I cant imagine the EU will become the same status as a federal state in sense of the USA or Germany in foreseeable future. Europa with single currency but without really common economic and financial policy, can it work in long terms? Just imagine, Arizona has to pay interests of 3% for the own state bonds and Wisconsin 11%? or Bayern 3,5% and Hessen 12%... Crazy or? and this is the real current situation in the euro-zone. In the federal state Germany exists the financial commpensation between "poor" and "rich" states from the beginning (Länderfinanzausgleich ) and it has been working for more than 60 years. But such a "solidarity is possible imo inside the same nation, not in entire Europe.

Yes, indeed. This idea about common European €-bonds is very unpopular in Germany for two reasons. It would bring additional costs ( the difference between % of the current german bonds and these new ) and the Germans want to save their excellent ratings at any price. It could be endangered due to this project. Krugman uses severeal times the word "solidarity"... this solidarity exists under the EU states, but it is strong limited... by national interests. From the European point of view.... The boring aspect of the US professional team sports is the completely lack of the relegations battles in all the leagues. Such a structure; xx teams get to playoff and the not qualified teams make a holidays is unthinkable in the most of european sports. Thinking.. we did not manage playoffs this year, so what? maybe next year, we make holidays...; In Europe the weaker teams have to fight until the last day to stay in the top division. This fight is hard, exciting and sometimes more interesting than what happend at the top of the league.
