As a passed hand we showed both minors with responsive and raised partner's 2♦ to 3, which should imply a 5 card support since its usually a bad idea to go to the 3 level with 8 trumps, when they could let us play at the 2 level. Partner heard this and passed so I see no reason to overrule him. Partner overcalled 1♠ opposite a passed hand, which doesn't show the world, I wouldn't be surprised if they can make game.

Yes, if you hesitate you need to play the queen.

5♦

How do you play this double...
the_clown replied to jillybean's topic in Intermediate and Advanced Bridge Discussion
I would bid 2♥, at MP I could try for 200, especially if they do have weak 2 in ♦ available. -
I would auto X on hands 1. and 2. Passing hand 2 is just ridiculous. The third one is trickier, I would X playing with my regular partner, but if we agreed to play very sound doubles I may pass.

Take it out OR Leave it in

At MP I would try for 200, at IMPS I am always pulling to 2♠ -
I would certainly bid drury followed by 2♠ even if partner shows a full opening bid.
-
I may open 3♥ on this if fav, but after having opened 2♦ bidding again is insane.

Hand Evaluation

5♣ -
Easy 2♣. 1♠ would be forcing, mostly 5+ cards
-
With my regular p we have the aggrement that passes at low level show no clear direction so I would pass. With a random good partner I will bid 1NT and XX when they double me, partner will hopefully pick his better minor then
-
What would have been 3♣ directly? I play it as nat nonforcing which means that delayed 3♣ is p/c. Ofcourse if 3♣ direct would be pass/correct partner now shows clubs
-
No I will not open and I cant bid later. I am not saying its perfect, but I think it helps us do well on the swingy hands (where each side has a big fit in a major). And quite often when you have no support and couldnt open you dont want to bid anyway. I mean if you didnt have 4♠ you would have opened 2/3♦ right? If I had the same hand a xx in !h I would X.
-
I also hate opening this hand. I play these as fit-showing only when partner opened/overcalled a major. When he has bid a minor I think we all agree is better to be able to introduce our own suit. If you had x x Kxxxxxx Axxx, and the bidding went p-p-(1♠-2♥-(2♠) I am sure you will want to make a 3♦ bid. Partner will never know what to do holding a singleton ♦ and a 6th ♥, assuming that you make the same bid with 6 average ♦ and Hx in ♥. Apart from that I would have opened 3♦ on the hand anyway unless unfav.

What to do with this

If partner opened in first seat I will respond but not because it is forcing, but because I am sure he has his opening bid. -

Ho can 1♠ be round force if I am a passed hand? + if partner opened light in 3rd seat there is a fair chance that they will X you in 1NT and you have nowhere to go -

Depends what they are playing. Against some minor suit contract I will try to collect as many H ruffs as I can. Should S bid 3N I can still double for a ♠ lead......... -

1. I think that in most cases there is no right strain, if we bid now we may get too high on a misfit hand. Partner will rarely 4 spades and even if he has 2S on a 4-1 break will not work out too well. 2. If partner has a good hand he will bid again. (If they bid 2m, he will surely double with good hand a singleton or 18-19 bal and a doubleton. If they bid a suit where he has 3 cards and 18-19 bal thats just bad luck). And even if we miss a game once in a while thats ok in MP, because when we dont lead a game I think that passing leaves us in a much better position. 3. South who is passed hand will rarely be able to pass the double he needs some values and some good hearts. Partner is sitting over the hearts so even playing 1Hx should not always produce a bad score. -
Yes it promises a fit. I dont think it is common here, but I definitely fell that fit showing is the better agreement. The fact that I happen to play a strong club makes it even more attractive, but even in a 2/1 system, I think fit showing is clearly superior. Even if I am not passed hand and bidding goes (1S)-2h-(2S) 3m would be fit-showing
-
Sry I was assumind 1♦ shows 4+ cards. If I dont have that agreement, its a pure guess. Now I regret not showing my second suit, which would have allowed partner to make an intelligent decision.

I would have passed. Partner opened third seat, (in my understanding can be quite light) and will have another chance to bid if he really has a good hand. After that I still can do something encouraging right? I cant imagine that partner will sell out to 2m with 18-19 bal or something similar. I dont mind defending anything they bid. Only positive thing about 1♠ is that it is lead directing. I wouldnt be happy if S doubles 1♠ for penalty holding 4♠ and then we concede silly 500/800 only because partner decided to open a bit lighter. -
I would like partner to declare but unfortunately 5♦ will be last train. Passing with a huge double fit is really scary, so I would probably settle for 5♥ and hope they dont lead a ♠

4♣ is ridiculous

To slam or not to slam?
the_clown replied to S2000magic's topic in Intermediate and Advanced Bridge Discussion
I dont agree that partner should cuebid when he has some extras opposite my game try. The cuebid gives a lot of information to the defenders and since 90+% of the time I have only invitational hand I dont think this is really profitable. Of course you will have difficulties with the slam hands, but they dont come that often......
