  1. sure not the best 1♠ bid ever but you have all those ♠ honors so it cant. with 4 lousy ♠ would pass but with 5♠ and 6 pts (5 hcp +1 for doubleton) is a min bid and it has 3♣ so is unlikely to get into trouble f you don't like ♠
  2. actually GIB is 3=2=5=3 but your point valid, GIB bid a 3 card suit in response to a takeout double, doesn't it know this is a poor suit to go for game never mind slamming. Was willing to play in 3♣ and suddenly want to play in slam when you haven't shown significant extra values. the description of 4N is hilarious 3+♣ 1+hcp 1- total points who goes for slam on that. partner would bid slam themselves if that's all they needed.
  3. Its called false preference when you show 2 card support for opener's 1st suit ♠ as opposed to passing opener's 2nd suit ♦ its a very important bidding concept in standard American as opener can have 15-16 pts and couldn't make a forcing bid and now can make an INV bid
  4. Rosenkranz makes the most sense, but I thought it was AK or Q . Other meaning would be responsive double, takeout for the two unbid suts
  5. here GIB should bid 1♦ then keep bidding ♠ till partner gets the message GIB is too much of a point counter. this hand has bid distribution and good intermediates in its long suit so it doesn't have 12 pts is still worth GF
  6. Clubs - good if partner has Q or A, even not horrid if p has ten if this imps or mp?
  7. ok so in ACBL your allowed to open a weak 2 (5-11, 6-10, 5-9 etc) with 5 major and 4 of unnamed minor but if you have opening type hand (10+) you can open with 2 known suits 5-4, the most common example of this would be Flannery but you cant open 5 of a major 4 of unnamed minor this seems backwards to the normal ACBL protocol where weak bids need to have known suits
  8. Both double (better) and 2♦ can work out fine. The real question is what do you do when you balance? I think 3♥ is better than double, yes it may be a bit of an overbid, but partner may be shy about rebidding ♥ lacking the K & Q. and KQ♥ suggest playing not defending.
  9. very useful as over pre-empts partner may be forced to double on less than ideal shape because level is so high
  10. If you come in as a sub in a tournament at trick 8 or 9, you have know idea what has been played before, are your trump good, do opponents have outstanding trump, are you side suit cards good? Its a complete guess. Barring some method of informing sub what's happened before ( which would be very time consuming) cant the board just be adjudicated or a robot be used to take players place for that hand ( I don't think this would be allowed in ACBL tournaments)
  11. and a diamond ruff is possible yes so game made doesn't mean its a good game
  12. bidding goes 1♣-1♦-dble-3♦or4♦ now what happens if your 1♠-4♥ or 4♠-1♥?
  13. I like 1♦ also. it puts you in a good position to make a bid showing a maximum with your next bid. Starting with a double your setting yourself up to overbid with your next bid.
  14. I would like to make an unpaid advertisement for Herbert negatives instead of cheaper minor as a double negative. In Herbert negative the cheapest step is used as the bust, so 2♠ over 2♥ and 2N over 2♠ this means if you have as major 2-suiter with ♣ you will be able to show it naturally. If your playing 2♣ as GF except for 2N rebids it is playable to go without a double negative and it does sound like that was the situation here. I wont hazard to guess what you bid with a zero count then
  15. I doubt West's 3♠ scored very well at mp -300 GIB probably saw its perfect 4333 distribution and saw all its ruffing potential
  16. While I think doubling on 4-3 hand like this would probably turn out ok, if your 4-2/4-1 you cant double so 1♥/1♠ can only promise 4 cards so you might as well have double as 4-4
  17. he is correct but 2♦ is a gross underbid. think should bid 4 or 5♦ now after 2N which should show extra values and at least 1 and probably 2 ♦ AI partner should bid 5♦
  18. mikeh, on 2014-April-20, 19:55, said: . So for me, 3♠ would be 6+, good suit, slam interest, which is actually a pretty good description of the OP hand (of course, I don't consider opener to have a reverse). I agree too, if partner has a real reverse you have to let him know that 6♠ might be the spot
  19. What are opener's possible actions after a redouble? Sounds like they must bid 2♣ so GIB can sign-off in a minor. which would be ok.
  20. funny if you overcall a suit GIB wont lead your suit with a singleton but if you pass it might lol
  21. Cue-bidding Aces is a flaw in my opinion. cuebidding Aces and Kings (and sometimes shortness) and if you have a control in all side suits then you use keycard to find out if off 2 KC (or 1KC &Q) is better. A human would at least cuebid 4♦ with the K♦ then the person with the K♠ or singleton can Keycard but GiB cant cue-bid K♦ cause it's not an Ace
  22. Doubling 3N for penalty and making a double of a suit escaping was supposed to be fixed in the last update as being for penalty
  23. what do u bid with 4-4 in majors and a 5 card minor 12-16 pts? 2♥? the 2M bid gonna cost a lot of bad boards.
  24. I don't like 2♠ as pick as suit. ♥ is going to be a 4-3 unless p is doubling with a hand too strong to overcall which seems unlikely as his heart suit will be too weak to do this. plus there isn't enough point in the deck for doubler to have a really big hand so what to bid ♦ suit is poor, ♣ is decent and it does have invitational values (towards a minor suit game) so I say GIB should jump to 3♣
