Unqualified Vugraph Commentators
DJNeill replied to rogerclee's topic in General Bridge Discussion (not BBO-specific)
Hi all, I think that the commentating that basically shows how close to GIB they can be is not helpful. If they can try to imagine themselves as commentating a Premier League match on TV, that would get them close to what I think the vast majority of viewers are looking for. It is a creative opportunity, to me at least. On the policy side, the mute capability already provided by Fred-Uday is a fantastic client-side solution to the problem of undesired commentary. Thanks, Dan -
1h-p-2nt, what do SAYC partners actually mean?
DJNeill replied to MomoTheDog's topic in Natural Bidding Discussion
Hey, Usually when it is bid slowly it is Jacoby 2NT, and when bid quickly it is a NT hand, in my experience. Thanks, Dan -
Hey, Adam I played there about 5 years ago with my Australian/NZ friends Mark Abraham / Mike Wilkinson, and they had told the director they were international junior champs or something and given a seed worth of about 5000 or 10000 each, which put us in Bracket 2 of 20+. So, just adopt an Aussie accent, piss Rodwell off, and say you are junior world champs! Thanks, Dan

Hey, I think that the reduction of said fudge by changing the laws to meet the behavior is good. As long as a club can theoretically allow any convention it could before, there is nothing wrong. Even if they banned mid-chart period, we would still have BBO and homegames. I have not gone to my club in a long time because they banned mid-chart conventions a year ago, but I don't hold it against them. They are growing the game nicely, with a higher tablecount than there has been in a decade. Pros might enjoy more populous clubs. Thanks, Dan

Hey Mike, Sorry you had a bad bridge event. I hope the rest of your trip went well. I am not familiar with the area too much but perhaps it had some good restaurants. Thanks, Dan
-
Hey, Most of the local people I play with play Lebensohl and say they know that direct denies, but only 1 out of 4 remembers it. Direct denies, slow shows is the way it is written up in, say, Modern Bridge Conventions. It hasn't really cost except, no wait yes it cost 1st place in NAOP-B on the penultimate board. Thanks, Dan

Hey, Happy Birthday, Rolandddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddd!!! The world owes you a big "Thank You" for your vugraph administration. Dan

Hey, 2 index cards. 2 pieces of tape. Bah, Dan
-
Hey, When on the form for adding friends, if you put the cursor in the blank to type the new friend's name, the Enter key should press the Add button, and not OK, which closes the window and does not add the friend. Thanks, Dan

Hey, Also known as ILLEGAL (7) in a few events that use the GCC. Dan

Hey, My weight doesn't change much. It might go down temporarily if I didn't stay hydrated - caffeine and heat will drop me 8 pounds of water weight. I would gain a few pounds of fat if I ate out all week, but that's true anywhere for me. I don't play enough bridge to fidget off pounds when I go to tournaments. Sontag I would imagine gets a workout when he's gyrating, waiting for the other 3 slowpokes to play. Thanks, Dan

Hey, MoveOn.org petition Thanks, Dan

Hey, Rigal is the one book to get since you already have some precision experience. It discusses every aspect of precision in beautiful detail. Berkowitz is a bit too low-end for you (plus the pages start falling out for me and others I have heard similar from). Other precisions are just too outmoded or ACBL-unfriendly or weird for you, unless you like being old, unlawful, or odd. Getting the feel for how precision wins in real life is why you need to get Meckstroth's Win the Bermuda Bowl with Me. I never understood why people don't just copy the best players' systems to start with and go from there. You can even find meckwell notes out there on the series of tubes if you google enough. Precision is about attacking with light limited openings, and less about strong club, which I think was the popular notion originally. Maybe you knew that. Thanks, Dan

friendliness reputation system
DJNeill replied to extrasolid's topic in Suggestions for the Software
Hey, Side note on previous post: I have reached the boundary of number of enemies. Now I have to prioritize :-) Bear in mind this is for chat-muting, not avoidance. Dan -
Hey, The Friday bulletin indicates there will be great coverage. Thanks CME! Dan

Hey, What's the verdict on Trial vugraph? I would have volunteered as an operator but I'm working these days. Thanks, Dan

Todd already has suggested the best way of rating: peer-rating like on Ebay. Who would you rather trust, 2000+ players collective opinion or the player's own opinion/whim/whatever? It might not be 100% perfect but is far better than the faux-rating system we have now. Would be not too non-trivial to program, I think? Dan

Hey, Every April the best of Italy play in the Spring championships : the teams this year Has BBO ever vugraphed this? Dan
-
Hey, In case you formatted only part of your hard drive, do a search (Start...Search...Files and Folders) on all the hard drives of your computer for filenames of "*.bss" which will find any such convention cards on your machine. If you used it at all, check with your partners or opponents - maybe they saved an older version. Did you ever email the file to anybody? Burn it to CD? Dan
-
Hey, So Rodwell has been practicing some new relay system of Ekeblad's heavily with him on BBO (bumportant = ER). Did anything ever come of the rumor that Nickell were disbanding sometime soon? Dan
-
Well, maybe like OKB 2/1 to BWS :-)

Yeah when playing is the only time it is hard to distinguish. The block colors in the lobby are very effective. Dan

The previous icons for friend/enemy were far far more easy to read than the current very similar yellow smiley/frowny. A yellow cartoony face is almost welcoming, and I want an ominous, or at least obvious, enemy icon. A toggle for the old icons? Dan

Agree that we need to give enough time for commentators to analyze. I think that it would be totally fine for the commentators, Roland, Fred, anybody to tell their operator to slow down or speed up, as need be, while the broadcast is happening. Dan
